If anyone uses Tabletop Simulator and they want to teach me a hot new game from 2024, let me know! I need to play as many releases from this year as possible to do my Tier List video for the year!
@chrisedwards65734 ай бұрын
I can teach Andromeda's Edge. Do you consider it from this year? I could teach Arcs but to be honest I don't like it; probably will sell/trade my copy.

Really enjoy the list/tier videos (and the wider content in general tbh) as I always come away with new games to check out and new perspectives on games I already own/have played - very refreshing

They're literally playtesting a reprint of Nations. A big part of the reason it's not talked about any more is that it's OOP from the original publisher, Lautapelit.
@TabletopTurtle4 ай бұрын
That must be it. Happy to hear it's being reprinted. I always avoided seeing if any game I currently own is out of print because I know damn well the temptation to sell will be too high.
@renato123wenzel4 ай бұрын
Runewars is a epic masterpiece - flawed in same ways but much more immersive like Twilight Imperium and working with less players! Being OOP is a Top 10 game ever in collection
@TabletopTurtle4 ай бұрын
Sometimes, the flawed games are the best usually because they're trying something new! I havnt tried their miniature game yet

There are games that are entirely meant to only played once. Like the Unlock! series. You play it once, but then you should pass it on to friends and family. Definitely a casual game but still. At least you can pass the Unlock series on, unlike the Exit games, which have you rip up cards etc.

Nations is still Rahdo's #7 favorite game in the world out of thousands but yeah, apart from him I don't recall anyone mentioning it.

Speaking about the Mansions of Madness, it's not a nerdy thing with complicated mechanics at all. There's Arkham horror that is great for heavy players in the same universe. But unlike other FFG's games, MoM does truly provide great story, huge plot twists and haunted atmosphere, as you mentioned. It has something for all player types. I clearly understand your feelings but if you ever play it again - please, just let the game go, you don't need to overplan anything, just make interesting decisions (kill witnesses, cooperate with the Old Gods, barricade your only exit - that's what I enjoy to do) and feel the game emotionally, not with your brain. Also, mechanically, the app is very deep in the way it works. People just don't get a chance to discover it because it's not explained explicitly. Anyways, these are just my thoughts that helped me fall in love with this game. Have a nice day, man!
@TabletopTurtle4 ай бұрын
Thank you very much! We do look somewhat alike, as well. No, mansions is fairly simple to wrap your head around, which makes it a good game to introduce to people who are outside the hobby and are a little hesitant to play a game. It's certainly not as boring as Betrayal. The first time my friends and I played that game we had some dumb random mission where you had to play a game of chess with Death or something. Lord did it ever suck.

HA! Sell after 12 times? Even my favourite games don’t get that many plays. Most are 1-4 plays, sell and move on. I treat them like movies most of the time. Merchants and marauders was one and done. I remember being a pirate, and losing to other players who were merchants. Why call it a pirate game when it is clearly a merchant game? Still waiting for a pirate game that surpasses Blackbeard from 1990 and it hasn’t happened.
@TabletopTurtle4 ай бұрын
That's probably a pretty healthy relationship with games. The second hand market is so good too if you're in a bigger city that you don't lose much, either.

@@grog3514 Games like Black Fleet and Jamaica are certainly fun family affairs, but I'm not sure either really capture the scurvy-goodness of pirating.

@@TabletopTurtle have you tried forgotten Waters or Firefly? The later is set in space but plays like a pirate game if you have the pirates and bounty hunters expansion.

@@TabletopTurtle that’s what I do now. Facebook marketplace often has amazing deals. I just avoid buying anything new and try to get something old for 20-30 bucks. I am playing Pirates of Maracaibo right now.. This one is actually not bad. But again crazy prices are keeping me out of the new market. this one cost me $80.
@TheZak69694 ай бұрын
Mine is Kemet. That game rules and I would recommend it to anyone, totally worth the price. But you really have to play with people of your skill level since it’s really hard not to blow new players out of the water. I’m always teaching new players so it just kind of takes up room on my shelf.
@TabletopTurtle4 ай бұрын
I'm a Cyclades man myself. The skill issue is a big problem, especially if you play games online now and then. There are so many games I just had to walk away from playing online because I kept getting better and making it impossible for my friends to enjoy the game with me and that's no fun for either of us!

I think there's an in between to be had to be honest. Yes, I think it's inevitable that you will outgrow games. So yes, I think it's good to be ready to handle the mix of emotions with games "you're supposed to love" and have the self honesty to not beat yourself up about it. Of all games, I have that right now with Twilight Imperium due to prophecy of kings :( But at the same time, I don't think games having a shelf life shouldn't prevent us from being longevity-minded when it comes to purchases. Even if the community can buy/sell used games to give each box a second or third life, I have a lot of mixed feelings about encouraging or getting too comfortable about making ephemeral purchases. It'd be one thing if the market at large already adopted the plastic free production methods we are seeing with Earthborne Rangers & Daybreak. But if a game's going to end up full of plastic minis, I feel justified in being a buzzkill that would beat myself up over treating those boxes as discardable.
@TabletopTurtle4 ай бұрын
I think that's fair criticism. I certainly don't want board gamers to start treating games in a way that mimics the real-world problem of engineered planned obsolescence, or worse, a sort of games as a service like apps or video games these days. My recommendation really only works for people that have a fairly good second-hand market in their location, so they can enjoy a game for some hours and know that they're really only losing 10 bucks when they turn around and sell it.

@paulhamrick39434 ай бұрын
No offense, but whenever I go to a board game store that doubles as a place to play miniature games, I look at the games they are playing and I just think it looks absurd and I can’t imagine they “simulate” battle/warfare better than a game like C&C Ancients, although maybe they do? I guess they don’t rely on playing cards in order to move your units. But they do look more cartoonish, sorta juvenile.
@TabletopTurtle4 ай бұрын
For some perspective, I'd wager the average non-gamer seeing a person pushing around blocks with stickers on them probably thinks the same thing you do about miniature gaming. 😜I think there are a lot of different miniature games out there that can cater to a wide variety of different aesthetic tastes and there are certainly some that literally just look like miniature versions of real world tanks, soldiers, whatever. C&C is great, but it's taking warfare and HEAVILY abstracting it, as all games have to do, but to a point where I don't think it's simulating being a general.

for me its a waste of money. i don't want a box to be sitting on me shelf collecting dust, i want to play it. Video games are no problem because I can always sail the seven seas. But board games are very physical. I will sell the thing, trade or get some friends made hostage to play the damn thing

Merchants and Marauders was a bad/terrible game from day 1. Pure garbage. BSG is an all-time classic that has never been surpassed. If somehow it got reprinted (and not as Unfathomable), it would sell like hot cakes.

@WalderFrey4 ай бұрын
Vanishingly small chance of a reprint. FFG don't have the IP, the series is now 20 years old so kids don't know who any of these characters are, and FFG aren't into board games all that much any more.
