Loved the discussion at the end. Loved the praise of the art, and the discussion about how the game isn't as complex as it might look at first glance. I know someone already mentioned this in the comments, but you are allowed to look at your teammates cards in a team game (though, I'll admit, team games are my least often played version of this game). The 6-player mode you discussed RIGHT at the end, I thought I'd note that there are both 3v3 modes and 2v2v2 modes. Both are considered advanced modes, largely because with longer waits between each individual turn, you want players to be very familiar with the rules and the characters, so that players can get through their turns quickly. I am not a stickler for the rules, and loved the game just as it played out on screen, but wanted to point out two thematic rules that were missed in the game, in case you ever play again: 1.) Thor can instantly throw or retrieve his hammer at ANY TIME (on anyone's turn, in any phase) by discarding a card from his hand. So, if there is an ability that does more damage if the hero has Mjolnir on his board, he can quickly discard card(s) in order to throw it on that hero before resolving the ability (assuming he has the cards to do so). 2.) When Loki uses the illusion token, you are encouraged to look carefully at the cards and lay them on the table in a specific order, then suggest one card for your opponent to pick. Unlike shuffling the cards and letting your opponent randomly draw a card, suggesting a card for them to pick introduces a fun bluffing element to the game. Are they suggesting you pick the one that makes you take all the damage, or are they bluffing and telling you to pick the one you ACTUALLY want to pick, or are they splitting the difference and suggesting the 50% damage card. That, I've found, can elicit some of the most uproarious results, because you feel extra jouyous when you aren't fooled, and you feel like an extra trickster, as Loki, if you successfully fool someone. Final point: The game also has depth. If you play the game a lot, you learn what tends to work well (ie, upgrading select abilities early in the game, then focusing on building up dice-modification cards for late game, and saving them for crucial moments). Add in the variety of heroes, and there's always a fresh match-up to try out. Thanks again for playing the game! I loved it.

LOVE Dice Throne. With the 20 dollar two player packs it's affordable to get into, the larger boxes are great if there is more of you, and every game I have played has come down to being close at the end. Well balanced and fun, my fave from the last couple of years.

I like Aaron/Scarlet Witch's swap out a die ability. It takes away a player's ability to use that die for it's symbol, which reduces the odds of them using an ability, even though you can still use the numeric abilities.

Bear in mind: our versions of games like this are always longer than a "real" game might take. We do a lot of overexplaining, kibitzing, and text/theme reading... for demonstration reasons. And we're also often playing a game for our very first time, which can add some minutes, as well. FWIW, I always felt engaged, both assessing the situation as it potentially changed around the table, and referring back to my cards as other turns happened. That said, I'm a fan of any game system that, unlike this one, gives you card drawing at the END of your turn rather than at the beginning. It's usually a time saver this way, and often gives you something to chew on while other turns are happening.

@@davidarnott4850 Yes fair point. I just feel like, not just from this play through, but my own plays as well, there is a lot of down time in this game above a two. But at two, it just flows. Great play through as always though.
@joelface

I would definitely say that this is best as a two player game until you're very familiar with the game AND the characters that you're playing. If you need to look over your board and deeply consider what you want to do, you can imagine that mulitplied by 3 between turns. But, once you know your hero, and what to do when the dice roll a certain way, you can swing around the table fast enough to keep it fun and fresh. I'd say it's worth even saying at the outset of a 3+ player game of DT "remember, we're here to have fun, and winning is secondary, so if you're stuck on what to do, just go with your gut and keep the game moving."

It seems like there's no real "catch up" mechanic. Does it feel punishing to constantly play from behind if another player gets a couple early lucky rolls, or dramatic?
@joelface
@joelface 2 жыл бұрын
The games 1v1 tend to be very close, for the most part. I know one hero has an ability that does more damage to an opponent if they have more health than you, but that's an exception to the rule. Generally it comes down to who had the better overall game, rather than who had the better finish... but the chance of an ultimate is always there, and you're more likely to push your luck when you're down and out -- something that can pay off big at times. Also, one player may be up early, using good cards to do a big attack, while another player uses their same good cards later in the game, which can then even things out towards the finish. I will ALSO say that in a non-team game, players can choose their targets, and are rewarded with being able to draw a card if they target the opponent with the most health (which does have a catch-up mechanic effect).

@joelface
@joelface 2 жыл бұрын
I'll just note that this game is very accessible if you FIRST play 1v1, instead of with 3 or more players, and then pick heroes that have a lower complexity rating (each hero has a complexity rating that makes this very easy to check). Then, to make things simpler, you can choose to play with the cards face-up in front of you, so you can see the cards your opponent has as well (it takes out some of the mystery, but makes things a little easier to contextualize). Finally, take the reference card, and read outloud the turn-order card for each step of your turn. Unlike Yahtzee, you can activate abilities more than once in a game, so it's actually maybe LESS to keep track of in some ways.

Huh! I love Season 1 Rerolled a LOT, but I find the Marvel heroes, regardless of their theme, have some REALLY fun mechanics. Black Panther's build-up and blow, Loki's illusion cards, Thors hammer he chucks around at any time, Dr Strange's spell cards that he stacks up on an ability space on his board... I just think there's some incredibly creative new ideas that take the game to a new tier. I LOVED how Black Widow can now upgrade during her roll phase, waiting until she lands an ability and then upgrading that one... and then having her abilities get more powerful based on how many upgrades she has in play! That's really unique.. I'd never have thought of that, and it works so well. But, obviously the first two seasons are fantastic, and an opinion is an opinion.. I'm just surprised.

@@IvanMallia I guess I get that.... I love the unique, original characters they've made before as well -- and actually my wife isn't a Marvel fan, and is a little less excited about these heroes for that reason as well. But I promise that if you can look past it (heck, put tape over "Scarlet" so it just says Witch) you'll find that the characters are great, require no knowledge or love of the comic books or movies and any shortcomings those might have in your eyes. That's my take, anyway! :P

I’ve played a bunch of times. I’ve never seen anyone have analysis paralysis. You ultimately get what you get with your dice. The only thing to decide really is what to go after, which you just look at based on your first role. Usually just a second of hesitation if someone takes a risk going for something risky.
