I noticed a tricky tactic that Germany could have played on the last turn to give them a great chance of winning. The only Allied land units in range of Shanghai were the British tank and Infantry in the territory bordering Shanghai to the south (Kiangsu?). Germany could have flown their fighter and Bomber from the Caucasus to attack those units instead of landing in Shanghai. Had they eliminated those units, the victory would have been won on the spot without any Allied land units to capture Shanghai in subsequent turns. Such a nail-biter of a game!

Watched this whole series and I have to say that having this like "after action report" style for the video genuinely makes it way easier to watch. I don't think that I could watch this if it was a 'live play' because Axis and Allies takes forever. Boiling a 5-hour game down to like an hour and a half and the talk of strategy(and having your opponents on is a great touch!) really makes a difference. I loved this game as a kid but none of my family ever wanted to play it, lol, so being able to watch good content about it is really something.

IDK if I'm silly, but I think J4 should have produced a fleet with a transport option to retake Shanghai on J5 or spread American forces on the other 2 zones. The 3 fighters added nothing but that's easy in retrospect.

Makes me wonder if having someone to bounce strategy off of or hand the dice to when the rolls are bad is an advantage.

I have played in A&A tournaments solo and with a partner, each has pluses and drawbacks. A teammate can help catch silly mistakes, but can also break your concentration. I enjoy both options, but only with a good partner. They don't have to be the very best player. They have to be someone that you want to spend that much time "mind-melding" with. If you end up with a bad teammate, it can definitely ruin the entire experience. Thanks for watching!

Excellent series! One piece of advice about the way the game clock works (taking this from another long game with a timer for tournaments [Twilight Imperium 4]); they call it a soft time limit. After the 5 hour timer expires the rule is you finish the round you are currently in. So in this instance even if the timer expired at the start of UK5 you would play to the end of US5. IMO it makes so much more sense and isn’t as prone to trying to manipulate the time limit (these guys are all very sportsmanlike but just in case you run into people who aren’t). Since you made such a popular video on the series I’m sure the tournament organizers would take your advice if you decided to talk to them about this idea. Imagine if in the future the game clock expired mid-combat where one side was about to win, it’d be so unsatisfying and even if the other team agreed to allow the combat to finish it’d be a bit of a controversy/messy ending.
@stevenschkolne10 ай бұрын
i believe they said earlier in the series there's a 15min grace period, so while they try to end by 5 hrs they are basically kicked out after 5hr 15min max. as for strategy, it seems having tournament games always 5 turns total, no matter what the time will lead to the most measured and fair gameplay (and about 5 hours i practice always, 6 hrs at the very max)
@BoardGameNation10 ай бұрын
Thank you for the feedback! We are working on a ruleset for tournaments now that plan to start testing soon. It will likely use a timing rule similar to what you described. US's strategy in Turn 1 was the perfect foil to Japan's strategy in Turn 1... getting those transports & destroyer picked off in SZ62 really derailed them and allowed USSR to become relevant in the East, and made tiny India's unit output far more powerful relevant to what Japan had on the mainland. This was a really cool series to watch! It's hard to keep such a clear record of how events unfolded and you did an excellent job of this for the audience. As you say, there's an endless number of things that you notice in hindsight but I have one comment that could have won the axis the game. They could have deployed bombers in Caucasus for G-4 and then taken out the infantry and tank in Kwangtung on G-5. This would have prevented the UK from getting that last victory city. Germany won. If the game was 1 Rd longer, or if the victory conditions, were adding up the value, of ALL the territories and units, then Axis were clear winners. The Iowa Jima move on Rd 4 Japan, was amateur, They only had to destroy Uk’s land units and put everything they could into Shanghai, to guarantee their victory. Doug and Gary got extremely lucky there, from that blunder. I know from experience that tiredness sets in, playing A&A, as with all strategy games. The winners are determined not by the starting plans, but by who makes the least mistakes. “The best laid plans of Mice and Men.” Thanks for a great video and the tournament. The highlights at the start of this video were so good, I wish that I hadn’t watched the 1st part. But thanks all the same, your videos are produced and created most excellently. Congratulations! ✨🏆✨🥇🥇🥈🥈Unlucky to John and Adam, so close after a gruelling tournament against seasoned pros. Next year you’ll take the trophy with those strategies.
@flashgordon667010 ай бұрын
P.s. I’ve seen people and have myself made exactly the same blunder; Iowa Jima Japan Rd4. I think it becomes a rhythm or habit for Axis, to seek to make bold moves and stretch out into new territories and to pose dilemmas for the Allies. Had that not been at the end of the game, it would’ve been a plausible strategy. But the Japs absolutely MUST take out the UK ground forces that were threatening Shanghai, above all other priorities. That’s the very essence of Strategy, priorities. You can do lots of great moves. But if you fail to do the most important move, all the others are nullified and become sideshows. Do the No1 move and the other peripheral moves become exponentially more valuable. It was actually a great game and I loved the highs and lows and swaying balance of power. The suspense was fantastic and lasted for longer than it looked it would. When Moscow went down, it really looked like it was curtains for the Allies. What a dramatic and glorious finale and that’s the most important thing. 👏🏼👏🏼 Great gaming all round.

Really cool you guys were able to collaborate on this! A very well played game. I'm wondering though, looking at the board in G5, was there any chance Germany could send all their air units to wipe out the British force in southern China? This would leave no land units to take Shanghai. Obviously hard to see in the moment, no criticism there, but it's an interesting what if.

Great conclusion to the series and congratulations for the title! Regarding the question what next, I have some feedback on what I think why I enjoyed this video series so much: Major: - play by play replay with deep strategy focus - your thoughts and discussions were really interesting and had me feel like I actually was at the live game, thinking about the strategies with the exact information available at that time (plus some strategic foreshadowing). - really high effort video and explanations that made following the action easy, even though I initially knew not much more about a&a than the picture on the box. Medium: - discussion between teammates and even with the opponent. A one-man-show video would still be nice, but having those additional inputs made it a lot more interesting. Minor: - the tournament journey and how the strategy played out against different opponents added to the experience. - the higher stakes of tournament play added some more tension (and the mistakes or inaccuracies made for some spicy twists that perfect play would not necessary have). Conclusion: I personally don't have much attachment to a&a, like a variety of games and would love to watch similar series/videos with other strategy games. That said, a lot of the points above I think are only possible with a lot of passion for the game from your side. If you think you can deliver the same energy and passion on another game, I'm all for it. If not, I'll gladly watch some more a&a. Also I need to talk to my wife about a possible 130€ investment into durable plastic and cardboard, this time through your referral link.

@BoardGameNation10 ай бұрын
We could host champions of other games. I (Gary) would be the Host and Play-by-Play guy like in this series, but I would throw to the guest for the strategy and thinking. Having a host that isn't a expert in the game could be even more helpful to newer player, because they are more likely to ask the simple question. We are eyeballing Diplomacy, RoboRally, and Acquire championship events at GenCon in 2024. Any particular game that you would like to see? Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

@@BoardGameNation I love A&A. But your thought is actually really interesting. As I love the stress & strategy from all high-level games. Plus providing this level of quality content would be amazing. Knowing the game from an expert's level is awesome. I know for a couple weeks I watched championship Settlers of Catan and I don't even play that game very often. So your idea would be like crack for my brain.

Excellent video series Gary and Doug. I enjoyed your comments and was impressed with your good sportsmanship. Thank you for a professional production. I'm interested in the various versions of Axis & Allies that you mentioned. Being a new player and not knowing the history of Axis & Allies, I'm confused as to the difference between the games. I went into the Renegade website but the short description of the games wasn't adequate for me to determine what's what. Also, everything was like a $100! I'd love to see reviews of the games and play by play descriptions similar to what I find in the Steam site. Do you know where I would find those?

That should bring you up to speed. Good job! Thar was fun to watch, nice production and commentary. The bidding was a new twist, or rather a new old twist. I played some tournaments back in the 90's where bidding was a thing. That version of AA wasn't well balanced, favored the Allies heaviky once one got a feel for the game. My guess is that the Axis players hadn't seen an aggressive KJF like this before. They adjusted fast, but it was already to late. I started playing 1942 on a board with a couple friends, thought I was a solid player. Went to Online Ranked and got schooled for a couple dozen games!

As a casual/online player, the time limit is going to take some getting used to, however I can see how much it benefits the allies in a game that inherently leans axis, looking forward to learning this style of gameplay

This video series is remarkably well done. It is comparable in quality to top notch youtube videos. The video quality, editing, and especially the fantastic commentary from two board game masters. This is a terrific showcase of a beloved board game series but *above all* it is entertaining! I used to play board games but not much in recent years. Thank you so much for doing these videos. I've really enjoyed watching them and following along with your strategies. I wonder about the practicality of the Thorpe Thump outside of a tournament environment. Because it only goes 5 rounds, leaving Russia to fend for itself against Germany is doable. Long- term though, Britain would have to commit more resources against Germany for the Allies to win. I think the American part stays pretty much the same.

It is definitely a tough (but not impossible) tournament strategy to overcome. In a longer game, it can still be effective with a few tweaks. We will probably be talking about this tonight in the live stream. Hope you can join us! kzbin.infoSjvrEKNr6_4?feature=share
