If you look back at the scene when Jimmy and Richard first met while waiting at the VA clinic, Richard shows Jimmy the German sniper's mask he carries with him and tells the story how he waited 3 days for the sniper to remove it to scratch his nose and that is when Richard shot him just below his right eye. That is exactly where his shot was aimed in this clip and I think that is an amazing detail. It shows how these soldiers mind's are still in the war as they are constantly reliving it.

It was common until newer high power scope became an option. Most people would go for the grape shot in the forehead, but windage and gravity drew the bullet off target slightly.
@novikovPrinciple7 жыл бұрын
Besides, why risk the one-in-a-million chance of the bullet glancing off of the forehead plate, when you can count on it getting through softer areas?
@Diablofeb42 жыл бұрын
Good answers but it's symbolic. The windage and gravity within 5 feet in a store or resturant won't matter at all, even the long distance shots were not affected at this time due to windage and gravity from a trained marksman. For an example cutting the dick off and putting it in the mouth or cutting the tongue off and putting in a shoe. It sends a message to who found them.

In all fairness, Jimmy (the character) was a Harvard student before going off to war. He wasn't your typical blue-collar gangster with only some grade school to pass off as an education. It makes sense that he would have a way with words, moreso than the dumb goon sitting there listening to him. I think it's believable just from that fact.

I think that, in the context of the character, the speech makes sense. Jimmy, the character giving the speech, was going to an ivy league school before he took off to fight against the Kaiser. In the last episode or two, you see him quoting from Christopher Marlowe (if I recall correctly). The writers of this show are quite good, in my opinion, especially for television.

I hate that this guy could be killed for killing Pearl but Jimmy was unable to avenge Angela's death. I found that unfair. I loved Angela in Boardwalk. I thought she was one of the better characters. Her and Jimmy's love was strained because of the choices he made but they both loved each other unconditionally even if sometimes it didn't seem like that. Jimmy's mother had a lot to do with the issues in the marriage as well. Best character on this show besides Steve.

@cassavelli In case you didn't follow the whole thing. He wasen't raised or survived on the streets to become the typical mafia or gangster type. He's sucked into that world rather reluctantly. He's struggling to get back to a normal life after a world war with a wife and kid to provide for. Meanwhile he finds the killing and crime rather easy after what he's went through. It's actually quite a compelling character since it could be anyone under the same circumstances.

I feel a little sheepish responding to a ten year old post but as an introvert I hate the notion that you can't trust the soft spoken. Richard Harrows character was a world class sniper and as professional and trained as they come. Wouldn't make a difference if he was as brash and loud as Al Capone was. To me, the loudmouths have a huge chip on their shoulder and way too much to prove. They freak me out, personally. People are just people

@jswinder Well, if you look at the scene again, there wasn't really much to notice. The glass suddenly shattering was a jump, yes, but by the time they realized it had been a bullet with a one way ticket into that dude's face, it was all over. And even if they weren't familiar with Mob hits like that, a headshot is a headshot - it wasn't like Richard was going to unload on his target.

Together, alone, in a group... doesn't matter. When it's your time, the grace of civility won't protect you. You piss someone off, you make a mistake, you say something to the wrong people or you simply are wearing the wrong colors... There's no warning. You join the Mafia you become a thug, a grifter, no justice for you, no recourse. You get a lifetime of looking over your shoulder and it won't even matter - if they're shooting you from a window. Your life turns into a game of hide and seek that never ends. Even if you run, get pinched, become boss, take out your enemies... the game never earns. There's no recipe to surviving that. You can be good, you can be great, you can be paranoid or frugal or well trained... you still are constantly playing whack-a-mole except they're popping out with guns, drugs, pimps, and occasionally... You're not holding the hammer. You're the mole, and that's it. You open a door and boom, someone hits you in the face with a hammer because you signed up for that life. You live and die by these games and they don't care how fast, or smart, how good or bad, or how knowledgeable you are. It isn't a meritocracy. You don't get what you deserve, you get what comes to you and that's that. ... it's chaos, but that's the choice. Freedom without security. You figure out your own security and realize that it probably won't matter. You just can't win every fight. You can be the biggest baddest player that ever was. It won't give you an ounce of peace. Whether your death is front page news or not even listed... to you, still dead. Shot in the back, shot over dinner, shot over cards - shot by a random punk looking to make a name. You can't grow eyes in the back of your head. Gotta sleep sometime, gotta eat sometime and the more vigilant you are, the more patient enemies will become. .... there's no secret sauce to this life, there's no perfect rhythm. There's no gaming this system. Eventually a bullet is on its way to you, and that's it. Probably in someone's pocket just waiting a few years until the right one finds you. Fair chance it's in your own armory too. You might be totally the best there is, but that means you'll just get all the more unique death.
