Yeah, I think you put exactly how I feel about the show is in a nutshell. I think it was a great show, and they had all the elements of a great show, but I think that's the thing that stops it from being on the level of The Wire/The Sopranos/Mad Men/Breaking Bad is that a lot of times they stumbled in putting all the pieces together.
@mrmoviemanic1
@mrmoviemanic1 5 жыл бұрын
@@AmericasComic I disagree completely. The show isn't about catering to the fans or attempting to create scenes where crime bosses shit all over each other while taunting. It's more about careful decision making and trying to make a sense of stability to the corruption, if it was all archetype asshololics by the characters, it wouldn't feel one bit realistic or understandable how they got to the places of power they did. It also doesn't justify crime in a cool way unlike how even Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Soprano's are guilty of doing. I don't want another story about Lucky Luciano and Myer Lansky with Bugsy acting all gungho while cursing there lights out. I'd rather see them struggle to even be taken seriously for 4 seasons.
@mrmoviemanic1
@mrmoviemanic1 5 жыл бұрын
@Alex F I agree that Tony didn't enjoy his way of life, but I have to say that the entire Series, he doesn't get nearly as much pain as he dishes out, he always feels like the untouchable and kind of like a character that just complains about his happy life (Which is amusing as all hell, but I wouldn't say it's a negative representation of the crime industry, and more of a satire of it.) Nucky constantly gets people making problems for him and trying to kill him. He feels like he's faking his enjoyment at every point for the sake of earning enough to somehow become happy, it's a constant downward spiral that actually ends with hitting rock bottom and never getting back up again. Boardwalk is a deeper look at the folly of crime like The Godfather, While Sopranos is more of a satire of crime, sort of like Goodfellas. Overall it comes down to your preferences on which show you like more, but I tend to think Boardwalk has more of a fulfilling story to it than Sopranos did.

I agree. They took the time to show that dumb Benedict Arnold mf Dunn Pernsley, or w.e his name, lots of other instances where the scene/ppl involved weren’t even big characters on the show , much less real life bc theyre made up/fake.. Love the exchange at 3:30 - 3:42. Arnold betrayed Luciano and Masseria constantly belittled Meyer. Both of them patted them on the shoulders like they owned them. It kinda foreshadows their downfall and who succeeds them. It's one of my favorite themes of the show. The younger generation will treat their predecessors with the same cruelty they raised them with when they come of age.

For me, Jimmys ghost haunted the show after season 2. The show felt empty once Nucky's weird relationship with him ended. The show managed to do okay in season 3 with Rosetti and the war but season 4 and 5 is where Jimmy's absence and the shows lack of direction are painfully obvious.

@TheRealist 811 He liked the game in an era where the gangster life was stylish and was about business men talking to each other, making deals ... This era ended however and the new generation of gangsters were brutes like Capone, Luciano, Seagle etc. They weren't educated, used swear words while talking and didn't give a shit about conversation in general. But they didn't have any inhibition to kill their enemies with any weapons available. These people were psychos and Nucky simply was not

So it's 2022 in my world and I still can't believe Steve Buschemi was THE lead actor of a successful series for 5 years. I'm not saying he carried the show, not by any stretch. But he was the central character, the spinal column of the skeleton. I just always saw Buschemi as that quirky supporting character in Fargo or the modern westerns; but to see him play the American version of Machievelli (Nucky Thompson)... he was born for the role.
