That and some other comments (e.g. "we were served a native dish of tripe, which I cannot abide", "Do you know what the nice thing is about the Bronx Zoo, Charlie? Rothstein fucked over Lansky too but the reason he did it was because he told them to wait until the war between Masseria and Nucky was over and they went behind his back to borrow money from Masseria instead. Luciano ignored Masseria's "advice" to only do business with Italians, ignored Rothstein's instructions to put the deal on hold, and ignored Lansky's advice not to make the deal with the guy he thought was from Buffalo. a lot of fantastic shots; i swear i've learned more about visual filmmaking just by watching scenes of this show on youtube than from most other things ive ever watched; the joe masseria hit when salvatore says in italian/sicilian "the fight is over" with the overhead shot of fresh blood just spilling out by the gallon-looking like the end of a prize fight... the scene with salvatore and al discussing business in chicago, and salvatore gives him the empire state statue as a gift; cigarette smoke everywhere, close-ups on profile shots, and an image at the end of elephants like, braying to the statue (with al telling everyone to find Van Alder), i love the filmmaking style in this show; it seems like such a throwback, but somehow it seems so modern and fresh; like if scorcese was a young man again and new, i love the director shots in this show, it's fantastic

a lot of the staging in this show is fantastic as well; like the scene where eli introduces al by saying "we cut a deal with him" and the lower level gangmen part and al walks through, as if he's a man of the people rising up, and he gives that line "been on the road for 18 hours," it's like poetry; also the shot with the conflict al and frank and van alder have (when frank capone gets shot), there's like a shot on the crowd they're facing after van alder gives a line about how they're "numerically disadvantaged," and there's like tens more, tens upon tens more, of workers spilling in from the background while the foreground is framed by like a gate, it looks like something out of like roman drama or something, it's beautiful-all on youtube too; the costumes are fantastic, and i think stephen graham is almost just as good as daniel day lewis (he was actually in gangs of new york, unbelievable) because unlike daniel day, he doesn't slip his accent when he yells; this show is really fucking fantastic and i love it so much; they make 1920s gangsterism like america's pasttime with some of the romanticism i see in the shots and how they capitulate scenes with old-timey music, it's vicious, it's beautiful, and it's pretty; and it's also sad, i love it

2:41 That's when Luciano understands everything: AR had to dangle something in front of Masseria, not for the sake of double crossing the Italians, but to get Masseria to stop backing Rosetti. Actually Luciano was a two-faced bastard, he created the national syndicate (to give order and stop wanton retaliation killings) only after he himself had betrayed Joe "the boss" Masseria (and had him killed) secretly for Masseria's top rival, Salvatore Maranzano. Then Luciano betrayed and ordered Salvatore Maranzano's murder as well, finding himself head of both their holdings... His sudden decision to create the syndicate and commission was more to protect himself from being taken out...he had no problem taking out both his former bosses before than and adding to the wanton killing and etc. it's like the peasant who says, "all kings should be killed," who kills the old king and becomes king himself, who then says, "well let's rethink that for a second..."

I’ll never understand the constant disrespect all of the various bosses showed Luciano throughout the show. I get he’s new blood, and works with Meyer and Bugsy which is relatively taboo for the Mafia, but people kept employing this guy to whack fools. I get he’s not really the trigger man or hit man, but this dude was a captain on the losing side in a gang war, then somehow killed both sides bosses, gets capos from both sides to join him, and has gangster heritage that leads back to the 5 Points Gang. I mean, I know at the time they weren’t the gangster royalty they are now, but Torrio, Lansky, Siegel, Capone, Yale, etc. They are the goddam Avengers of gangsters. Being friends with just one of Siegel, Capone, Yale or Anastasia is deadly enough, but all 4? It’s funny to think Masseria, Nucky, AR, Gyp, etc all thought they could get rid of Luciano on a whim, but if they actually harmed him, there would be hell to pay all over the country.

No proof of it but I always suspected it was either Meyer or Charlie who killed him. AR was a very self involved and self interested gambler and never a real "gangster" per se (he had no knowledge/obligation of Omerta being Jewish) but at the end when he had nothing to lose and the cops asked him who did it and he plainly had to know based on how close they had to be to shank him and he refused, I always saw that as his final nod to either Meyer or Charlie. He invested allot and groomed them so he'd look at it as a net loss if he died and took them down too. Dutch, or the dude who owed the money to, I doubt he would've thought twice taking them down with him.

Season 5 being the last season probably means we won't see Meyer & Luciano's rise. It's a shame because they've built in Luciano's frustration with the older generation & mustache petes from day one. In other mob films he's usually Superman, never struggling etc. Their both amazingly played so would be great to see them start 'winning'. Always hoped we'd get to see them in 1931 but think the best we can hope for now is 1928/29, there's a few big events in those years to show their rise. Might not even get there though.
@JayCity10
@JayCity10 10 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming they will start Season 5 in the year 1925. Introducing characters like Hymie Weiss and even Marcus Garvey. I think it would end in 1931. So we might see Luciano's rise, along with the murders of Joe the Boss and Arnold Rothstein. That is my prediction. Do you think That these people, Garvey and Weiss will be in season 5?
@MrUtube20121
@MrUtube20121 10 жыл бұрын
lettersfromaboy Weiss is already there, he's the guy always with O'Banion. They could start using him more though. They changed the dates around a bit with Capone, the shooting at The Hawthorne Inn where Van Alden saved him was actually 1926, after Torrio gets shot. So who knows? At the moment my prediction is S5 = 1927-29, I hope you're right though. If it wasn't the last season I'd say yes to Garvey, not sure now.
@nitekilla
@nitekilla 10 жыл бұрын
The reason they haven't showed their rise is because most people (who know about organized crime) know about it so there's no need, sort of like with Capone.. last we see of him is when Torrio gave him his operation. They will probably mention Rothstein's big poker game where he lost 300k and welched, saying the game was fixed. After that he was killed for failing to pay his debt. The murder pointed to the guys he owed that money to, but the people who profited most from his death were none other than Lucky and Meyer. I'm really excited though... 1931, the Castellammarese war! Salvatore Maranzano will probably be introduced fighting against Masseria. The prohibition is almost over and the Great Depression has already set in.

I don’t think Meyer took personal offense to this slight from AR. Episodes later he is at his right hand, advising him to leave the table and later beats the man who insulted his mentor during that uncharacteristic loss. I think even though he ‘betrayed’ them, Meyer still had high regard for AR because at least no one could call him a weak man, like his father. He taught him in this moment who he was and he taught Charlie as well.

@@deathrager2404 Nobody knows the real culprit of the murder of Arnold Rothstein and the show for some reason chose to keep that a mystery and never insinuated that Lansky or Luciano had a hand in it nor do historical accounts mention either men as possible suspects. So you could be right...or you could be wrong. We’ll never know. He took it to his grave. I definitely do feel that Rothstein’s death was an impetus for their rise. It was end of an era of the old kings of prohibition and knowing that this old king could be defeated, it emboldened them to believe they could defeat the other kings and change the ways the way business was run for the better. That’s the way I choose to interpret at least..

Luciano's dealings with the crooked agents is never specified, but from the information given, he simply gives up the heroin and is allowed to walk (or something). I'm guessing they were at Rothstein's because a) a bit of hat-in-hand begging for his help goes a long way when your ill-advised, careless decisions have landed you in a world of shit with Masseria, and b) Rothstein invited them ("Charlie, Meyer, thank you for coming, this won't take long").

Negative. There was a huge boxing match and he bought the first 20 rows, gave the tickets for free to all judges, cops, partners etc to clear his name and never dealt narcotics again. He also paid something like 40-50k in bribes to clear the charge. Read "The Last Testament of Lucky Luciano", while exiled in Italy he made a deal to make a movie, the commission disapproved. So he changed it to a life story novel. It's an incredible read.
