Meyer Lansy & Nucky Thompson go into business - Boardwalk Empire Season 4

My favourite moment of the season so far, Rothstein has just had an abnormally bad night at the poker table putting his and Nucky's business relationship at risk. Meyer spots this opportunity and tells Nucky why he should go into business not with 'AR' but himself.
Also, the history with the Luciano story is slightly off in this scene imo. Charlie has said in his book that he used to protect little gangs, like Meyer's, from other bigger kid gangs. When Luciano proposed to protect Lansky he refused his help, that's why Charlie asked him to join, he had admiration for the little Jew kid refusing help (that he clearly needed) out of pride.

It’s the “they took my money” line that makes the scene. Even though he’s talking w Nucky and trying to make the biggest deal of his life, that memory takes Meyer out of the whole situation for just a split second as it flashes through his head and you can tell he was determined to never let it happen again.

Definitely one of my favorite scenes. We already know Lansky's a clever guy, clearly smarter than Luciano, but we rarely get a look at what sort of a man he really is, because he's always busy manipulating people and thinking up the next plan. He's easily one of the best characters on Boardwalk, and it's a pity we don't get more of him.

Lansky didn't have a lot of the flaws most people in the criminal trade had, on top of that he had a good mind for business and was reasonable enough to play everyone against or with each other as the need arose. In the end, he was one of the very few people in that line of work, at that level, to not only emerge unscathed and un-imprisoned, but to stay comfortably in the game long enough to do the impossible: retire and live out the rest of his life wealthy and respected in the community.

It does, only realised that after rewatching the series. However, rothstein didn't correct jimmy like nucky did Meyer. Then you contrast this with the scene of Darmody being asked the same question by Rothstein. Whereas Meyer gave an account that clearly identified the person that he is/was, James just started naming things he had done/was; father, soldier, bla bla bla. And that's when Rothstein knew he couldn't take Darmody seriously, at least at that point.

If you want proof how good he is in this role. There are two scenes in two different episodes where Meyer is put in a near-death situation. Those of us watching already know Meyer lived a very long life and know instinctively that Meyer will survive each. but his expression and his fear makes us worry that they may cheat and place Meyer in an early (alternative universe) grave. If season 5 becomes the Fall (or unsure future) of Nucky, and the certain fall of Capone, it will certainly be the Rise of Luciano and Lansky.

I was an immigrant and fled a war. I didn't know the language and my parents somehow got me to school. Despite my age I knew how difficult it was for them to do that. I was bullied daily, the teacher knew I was different and let it happen and my grades sucked, soI hated everyone there. Then one day I saw there was board of the top students and there was one of my bullies on it, number 1. The next year, I studied so hard that I became third best at my age bracket, the bully was still number 1. My bullying increased as a result of it. The next year, I studied even harder and I finally saw myself at first place and my bully second place. That day was my proudest moment of all. Eventually I moved to another country and became happier. Happier but soft. It's good to remember sometimes.

From Luciano's account in his book, Meyer always had his head in a book learning about business & economics, He'd always tell Luciano to read more, and even though Luciano was The Boss, Meyer always wanted something of his own. Which only happened when Lucky was sent to jail, then Meyer had begun to slowly outwit him. Real sour end to their relationship in real life. Interested to see how it pans out in the show.

2:38 This moment, when Nucky look down... It was the moment when Nucky realized who he was in front of... Not in front of Meyer, an ordinary young man. No. He was in front of a bunch of friends who have always known each other. A band of friends that complements each other. They know all the force and weakness of the other. Unlike Nucky, who cannot count on anyone and who is in fact, all alone. Nucky understood how weak he was compared to Meyer and Salvatore/Charlie. It's my interpretation of this scene.
@MrTVx99
@MrTVx99 3 жыл бұрын
I feel like Nucky wouldn't do good with having friends like that. He's greedy, and always backstabs a partner if it gains him more power. You can see the way he treats his brother, always patronising him and putting him down not lifting him up. With Nucky it's always about him, what he built, no one else is allowed to be a part of it because he wants it all. Contrast that with Al Capone in this series, who treats his brothers with respect. Always respecting their boundaries, always putting them first before his greed for power. Nucky was destined to fall, he never care about who he made enemies with, he never cared when he blatantly takes advantage of people in front of their face. You can see the respect people have for Nucky diminishes from Season 1 to 5. With the happy dinner they had where all the bosses met, to a gradual increase in distrust to the eventual war that got Nucky killed. Nucky had no allies in the end because he backstabbed all his allies until there was no one left to defend for him.

@@MrTVx99 I’ve met so many upper middle class kids that act like Nucky’s character. They become successful, but can only sustain surface level relationships because they lack restraint and screw people over if push comes to shove. They’re always codependent towards women for some reason and never follow bro code, so they end up alone. They do these things yet act self-righteous and pompous about it when confronted, usually due to the consequences of their selfishness/hedonism when it starts to interfere with other interpersonal relationships. Jimmy had that same pompousness about him and I couldn’t stand it.

madhash83 I actually kinda wonder how they're gonna handle the last season, because the show's gonna end before we get to the events that really propelled those guys to infamy. Hell, Rothstein doesn't even die for another three years at the point we're in in the show right now.

Because we still need to focus on the deep conflicts of Willie Thompson, and his poop-execution of a classmate. Isn't that far more exciting than watching Meyer Lansky, Al Capone, and Charlie Luciano rise in the crime racket? Please, more of Eli and his f-cking family!

It's not that he was talking about himself and Charlie. It's that he started talking business, not about who he is as a person. Nucky wasn't interested in the connections the guy has or how many deals he's made. He wants to know about his character.

Meyer so ADORABLE. His little accent! And that just makes his wits and badassedry more awesome. For pete's sake, can we PLEASE see more of Meyer, Lucky, Benny, and Al Capone in the next Season? With this now being 1925, it's time to focus on the rise of the big-name gangsters. So help me, if they give ANOTHER pointless sublot to that sulky prick Eli, and his snot-nosed son Willie Respect-Me-Or-I'll-Kill-You-With-Your-Own-Poop Thompson, I'm gonna make an appeal to my local Don to have the writers "taken care of."

We needed more of all the historical gangsters, as well as just the actual MAIN CHARACTERS of the show, like Nucky and Margaret and Chalky. There was absolutely zero reason to suddenly start giving major subplots to props like Eddie Kessler, or Eli, or Eli's shit-waffle son.

Aka one of the semi-regular customers at my old job. It was hysterical when I first heard about it, and then when the guy came in. One of the staff was like, "cool shirt" cause he was wearing a GTA5 shirt. He was like "Who was your favorite character." Kid says Trevor, and I start laughing, he's like why you're laughing? I tell him it was a trick question. Then the staff member realized who he's talking to when Ned Luke starts talking more.
