I quite agree, but my ego seems enjoy channels that the channels I like (craftsmanship and sailing) are less popular than the party and bikini channels. To each their own but it’s a bit of a sad thing for our l preferences and their creators. Thanks for doing amazing things and showing HOW to do them 🙏😎

I love the Brush reference at the beginning. I’ve still got my father’s and his father’s old woodworking tools in their original timber chests/toolboxes they made back then. Every time I open the chests or use a plane/tool, they are right there with me in some aspect. Don’t need photos, just those tools do it for me. By the way, I love the channel. You deserve many more subscribers for the content you provide. Keep it up

The curved bulkhead is beautiful, shows how critical the preparation is, which you made look far too easy 🤣 That Airhead without the liquids bottle looks much neater. We've been using NaturesHead for 4 years and absolutely love it. We've been planning how to get the composting to fully safe once the solids is emptied. Reasonably confident that we can use an insulated locker with heater and Raspberry Pi Pico to control to meet FDA safety requirements.

We used to make media units for Yorkshire bank which featured 2 vertical columns bent to a much tighter radius than the one you're bending to. We used the same system except that the first layer was simply pinned onto the former, the subsequent layers were applied using neoprene spray adhesive and a hand roller or just rolling the whole jig on a flat table. Works a treat, pop the laminated panel off the former and pull the pins out from the back

Every air space in a van needs a dual purpose, 1:airspace 2:...... A van I built used the space above the toilet pan as a wardrobe/pantry that swung into the seating space when you needed to go 1/2's. and the back of that covered wall was the electrical main distribution. Closed no space was lost, open 90 was toilet or electrical use, open 180 it was access. The underside of the van is great space for heavy and long stuff, we had pot holes through the step for our camp chairs.

Love the Tig work but shame you haven’t a mig for this type of work a lot quicker, I believe Tig has its place especially on aluminum and stainless steel again very talented guy doing this work 👍👍👍I’ve not come across that bendy ply before, made my own with the cuts as you showed but it is a bit tricky when the sheets get bigger .

Hey Neil, thanks for the compliments! Yeah tig is fab and not needed here, it has its place for sure but your right - it’s not here! We have a massive mig elsewhere but it’s not nearby and we are just using what we have to hand. Mind you… it’s painfully slow! The flexi ply is a game changer but if your using it in moist environments you must resin infuse it to keep it from rotting. Do that and it should be fine, just like the RM yachts really.

Cheers Chris, the working time is of course really relative to conditions. They do loads of different different hardeners though to compensate, I keep slow fast and extra fast, basically I work on around 45 mins the extra fast and 2hrs on the slow in our Scottish summer conditions…. This give me a little cock up time if I need it! Of course if you’re mixing large quantities you will need to put it in separate pots to achieve those times.

How much is this going to weigh when done with fresh water and grey / black water and fuel on board guys? The LWB and XLWB crafters are notorious for being overweight once converted unless you're incredibly frugal with how much material is added... curious what your approach is. Uprating is obviously possible, but pushes you into the next license category etc. and can make some ferries / RORO trains more of a pain. I'm just thinking that gorgeous curve and the material added to the step are probably a fair chunk of weight alone and then adding wall panels, furniture, the pop top, flooring, tanks, batteries, inverter, solar, any other cabinetry etc. it adds up really fast. Some soft / "airy" upper storage instead of solid ply perhaps? We've ended up doing a lot of apertures in our upper cabinets with canvas or bungee ran through cleats to avoid traditional camper van / yacht door fronts. When I was doing some back of napkin maths on doors for the upper cabinets alone, I'm pretty sure it's saved us something in the region of 25kg.... which means we can drive with the van loaded and 100L of fresh water on board, (and that's with 13mm Garnica Ply with a 2mm Linoleum laminate). Helps keep the weight down low too, which can't be overstated because it helps with the driving character of the van but also getting a good nights sleep through any weather... You're probably all over this weight thing, but if you're not, get it on a weigh bridge now and keep an eye on it as it could cause you some massive heartache down the road!! Can't wait to see what you do next - feel like I'm benefitting from your woodworking knowledge by KZbin osmosis.
@SailHub
@SailHub 2 ай бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the comment and your right to be worried about weight too, it’s amazing how it adds up. Our plan is to keep it within its payload limits. It’s amazing though, the weight of it all to date, the wooden step weighed it at less than an aluminium angle trim which was only fractionally heavier than the plastic alternatives. The curves that are in the bulkheads (video coming soon) weigh in at twice the weight of the rubberised nock in T strip that is commonly used. It’s heavier but it’s not much weight too add. As for the curve, it’s more of an awkward a lump to move around than heavy to be honest, it doesn’t actually weigh much - I rekon if jt were 3 laminates it would weight h the same as normal furniture boats but it is of course 4 ply thick. So yeah, currently running a tad heavier than the average camper at present. There’s is of course going to be bits and bibs that add the weight up and the roof is sure part of that. As are the tanks… we have a lot of those. We’re now fitting bulkheads and moving onto the galley so we would like to get her weighed at some point before we go bonkers with the cabinets. We could use nomex cores and all the rest but to be honest we just don’t have the money for that… maybe some helper springs but I hope not! Let’s see what happens!!

Should you not have cut out the roof top hole first, then bolt in the strengthening metalwork that the rooftop will screw, pop rivet onto? Just bolting to the van roof won’t be strong enough or replace rigidity you removed by cutting out roof bracing.
@SailHub
@SailHub 2 ай бұрын
So, we used the exiting roof rails which are double skin and braces from underneath. It’s more than strong enough for sure! There are many designs where you need to bolt to the steel framing but that’s not needed on the new shaped crafter. The usual steelwork that comes with these kits and several others that we checked out is all just 1mm folded sheet metal for aesthetics, some house a bed up there to but again just in the folded sheet material. Ours is quite a bit more robust, that will be evident in later videos. But yeah, cool comment and thanks for making sure we are safe! 👍🏼🙂

I can see the Cinderella is a great product and makes perfect sense. For us, we come from the sea where when things that go wrong it’s often a nightmare. We can’t get parts and have to fix it on site usually in the middle of the ocean. The Cinderella also requires quite a power source and has an incinerator, neither of which I’m keen on. I’m sure it works I’m just not sure I see the need. The airhead has no working parts except for a tiny electric fan (1/2 the size of a std computer fan) of which we will keep a spare. It’s also not necessary for its function either, it just a bonus part that speeds waste disposal process up. The most important things to us are simplistic and reliability, the Airhead appears to be the pinnacle of simplicity and function. Only time will tell 👍😃
