Good way to practice leaving and coming back through waves when it's not busy with other boats.

As a Sailor, Extremely dangerous. Easy fix, tighten the mainsheet. its there, one of those strings....
@BoatZone2 жыл бұрын
what would have happened in that situation, for example?
@bodybait2 жыл бұрын
@@BoatZone That sheet (rope ) could have broke and the boom could hit the person on the left, depending on setup. This become a lot more dangerous if you are not looking out for it in the cockpit. The boat could also break in certain ways that would prevent sailing it.

The reason the boom was not secured is because they were getting ready to raise the mainsail. When raising the mainsail, you want the bow pointing into the wind so the wind doesn't put force either side of the sail. Otherwise, it would be impossible to raise. When the boom is free to swing, it's ok if the bow falls off the wind a little. The boom will fall downwind and sail will still luff.
@bodybait2 жыл бұрын
@@christopherstimson7122 would disagree there. Some play should be there, but nothing like this. You are not sailing into the wind. A mainsheet is a line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat.

Walking forward on a sailboat or a power boat in an inlet where in a few minutes you will be in calmer waters Is Inexperienced boaters . On a sailboat you should Have the main sail up . If the motor stalls you have a back up. To control the boat . If you fall off in an inlet there is usually a current that you probably will not be able to swim against. Also falling off in a narrow waterway gives the boat a limitations of depth and Manovrabilit. If you don't want to wear a life jacket you should be wearing a Harness moving forward on a sailboat

6:55 This is the old fashion way of putting up the sail! once you leave the harbour. This has evolved and putting up the sail before leaving the harbour actually stabilizes the boat as long as you let faitly loose. Partucularly in this difficult place.

Capbreton Inlet gets complicated in rough conditions. What you mentioned to manoeuvre your boat smoothly is perfect. I´ve seen many mishaps over here you just need to be careful .

"From a non-sailor, is it not dangerous?" As long as everyone stays low and below the boom, it isn't dangerous. But I would prefer to have the mainsheet tight to keep the boom from swinging. It would also make the job of those who are removing the sail cover easier. I would have removed the sail cover before starting out, tightened the mainsheet, and kept everyone in the cockpit during the passage through the inlet. Understand that sailing out would be much more comfortable. A boat under sail is much more stable and comfortable than a boat under power. The sails offer a lot of stability.

“A boat under sail is much more stable than a boat under power” can you explain more, please? I thought it was otherwise
@williamstreet43042 жыл бұрын
@@BoatZone In my experience, a boat under power is subject to tossing starboard to port under cross wave action. This is especially true at low speeds. Under sail, the side forces against the sails and keel reduce the side to side motion of the boat. The fore/aft pitching remains. But the side to side stability makes a smoother ride. That's just my experience.

Timing is fine.. but rule is bow down into the waves, and bow up in a following wave. You see the second boat @ 2:44 did it correctly. You want to increase wetted surface for bouyancy. If he had his bow up, he could have flipped his boat.

Yes it is dangerous for a non-sailor and even for a sailor who walks out onto the bow with no PFD or safety harness. Those folks didn't look like geniuses. The captain of the small boat who timed the waves going out and rode back in behind the crest of a wave and apparently practiced those maneuvers repeatedly did look like a true seaman. My hat goes off for him. In lieu of a bunch of goof-ups, it was nice to watch a serious boater for a change and to learn from him.

When USAF lost a Nuke in Palomares, Spain, the army didn´t find it, sonar, search, divers and nobody could find it. Finally a local fisherman said: "It's there" and he found the broken arrow. Never discuss knowledge of locals.
