Hey you two! Love the vlog. Sail myself on a 424 Pearson . Hey Riley, forty year mechanic here. Instead of replacing that shaft there’s a seal kit available with a stainless steel ring that goes over those wear grooves to resurface that area. Comes with a new seal to match the new dimension. The companies that carry it are NAPA and Fel-Pro. The grooving never happens again either because of the stainless steel. Happy travels 👍
@anthonyrstrawbridge4 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh the resleeve method. Very informative indeed. What is your experience sir? Please provide details, I'm very interested in hearing from you.
@billw10444 жыл бұрын
Bomba, I'm not familiar with your recommendation or this specific application, but having rebuilt a number of engines and compressors over the years I know that there generally are several cheaper alternatives to replacing a drive shaft or a crank shaft. The simplest and cheapest is a seal that's designed to contact the shaft just a few mm either side of the old wear grooves. Another is to turn the shaft a little to remove the grooves and install a seal to fit the new reduced diameter. And if the first two aren't possible then there is always building up the shaft in that area of wear with wire welding and then turning it back down to specs. Unless there are other considerations we don't know about, or maybe a new shaft is just really cheap.
@anthonyrstrawbridge4 жыл бұрын
@@billw1044 Yes, I've experienced this too. Seal repositioning and or shaft sleeves. As a mechanic I was always surprised when discovering a new seal installed / positioned over a grove. The criteria for determining shaft surface to seal interface is not complex. I had recently viewed a shaft salvage on a large vessel performed by applying epoxy resin . They say that epoxy mixes with nano particulates now have a surface finish harder and smoother than the parent material along with a fascinating ability to sync heat better. I'm thinking about utilizing this technology for profit. Epoxy, diamond dust, carbon, and aluminum. Tech ingredients has some interesting experiments. Cheers!

Wear groves are rather simple to repair. Abom79 has many videos of him doing it to all manner of things. (they weren't in Pensacola FL months ago...)
