Get a thermal laser probe, warm up the engine, and check the temp of the each exhaust port where it meets the manifold and look for an abnormally cold cylinder... that would be your bad injector. This saves me tons of time guessing what injector to try first. I don't think it's a head gasket with no signs water in the oil or excessive pressure in the coolant system, plus if it were coolant you were burning you would smell it out of the exhaust. I'm almost positive you have 2 bad injectors by the sound of your engine. Cheers from New Brunswick.

I have a 4 to 1 block and tackle set up and it’s still a bit difficult/heavy to retrieve. I may change the blocks to a ratchet style so that I can pull a foot or so at a time, relax, re-grip and and pull again. had a motor before (not a diesel, but I assume at least this issue could be the same for gas or diesel) but it had a clogged injector line (injector checked out fine) but the supply line to it was clogged with gunk... causing a lean condition, and showing itself with puffy white smoke like yours is. it ultimately led to a burned hole in top of one of the pistons, and complete loss of power due to it and high crank case pressure and even more white smoke... Hopefully you've figured out your issue by now and it was an easy one! love the videos!!

Because of the high RPM overheating, I was thinking head gasket too, but I didn't want to scare you. I was also thinking it may be something simple, like excess oil getting in there. If it is, the fix is usually much easier and cheaper. You'll just have to find the directions for your engine to replace all the seals. Seals and gaskets go bad when they're sitting for long periods of time. Good luck.

Are your cats the turbo versions? If thet are, i would check the turbo. White/grey smoke is usually a turbo going out. I had a turbo go out on my cummins. Lots if white smoke, high temps. Good luck, and welcome back. An injector issue would be black smoke. If its a head gasket, you would smell coolant in the exahust. You can also take off your rad cap and watch the coolant level. If its surging up and down, its a head gasket bleeding pressure into your cooling system.
@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. Yes, they have turbos. Would the turbo going out manifest at idle or not in gear? We looked at the turbo before we left and it was free and clear. No surging or bubbling in the coolant.
@mandmmilling3716
@mandmmilling3716 2 жыл бұрын
@@SearchingforCShels if they are just going out, the only thing you might see just smoke, and heat. As they get worse, more smoke, loss of power, and excessive turbo whine. There are good vids for testing the turbo without removal on youtube. Before i started replacing injectors, i would test the turbo and the wastegate. If they check out, put pressure to the coolant tank with a pressure tester to see if it holds. If those simple tests hold, move to injectors and pump. I read that injector/ injector timing can cause white smoke too.

Hi, you two! Watch your videos although not up to date. Hope you get it resolved. Watching your trouble shooting with interest. White smoke from a cold diesel can only be unburned fuel. Crack each fuel line in turn until you hear a change, that will be your culprit if it's an injector(s). Assuming your coolant level is not changing. Extra fuel consumption means the firing cylinders have to make up for the power lost from the cylinder(s) which are not firing. Unlike a gasoline engine, when you set the throttle position on a diesel, you are not limiting air intake. You are commanding a set engine speed in RPM, and the fuel rack will increase fuel until that speed of engine condition is met. GOOD Luck!

Hey dudes, if you don't find the problem with fuel, whitish grey smoke says to me a compression problem. Many reasons for that, turbocharger, head gasket , piston rings, valves etc. Compression test her Sheldon. Did you look at the heat exchangers? She may just have a valve not closing properly. Take the covers off and go though the valves like a lash adjustment, a slack one might tell you something. Sheldon, I urge you to get a stethoscope, a great tool for pin pointing and listening to those noise's that you hear. They are so good, you can near see the noise through your ears. A pair live in my tool box, have done since I was 15 and I got my first car, thanks to my best mate diesel mechanic. Good luck my friends, I hope the heads don't have to come off. Fair seas C-shel. @SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 2 жыл бұрын
I suspect you might be right about the head gasket. I have always thought they don't like running at low rpms because they don't get up to proper operating temperature internally to seal the rings and such. This is why we've always tried after every 4-8 hours of low rpm running, to put her up on plane for 15-20 minutes.

It is a dinghy caddy. Original weight limit was 400 lbs. I’ve made modifications to it by working with the manufacturer to increase that by 100+ lbs. this new dinghy only weighs 50-75 lbs more than our old dinghy.

black smoke, not grey? run engine, pull dip stick, wipe it on a paper towel then drag over a magnet. any metal shavings on magnet? Is the dipstick brown, foamy or watery? no... probably not head gasket. Sounds like piston slap, pull oil pump and open, is the rubber impeller intact or is it missing any fins? Common problem... impeller shreds and bits get into block, over heating, lower power etc. many times people replace pumps without looking at damage on old one. I had same problem. Had to replace 2 cylendar sleeves. Don't freak out just yet. First... pull water pump, and insect impeller, any fins missing or damaged? check cooling system, back flush your exhaust system and flush. change water pump. hope this works and it is not too late.

Thanks for the tips Tory. The smoke is more white/grey, not black. Oil seems normal, but haven't done the magnet trick yet.

Have you pulled the valve cover off and inspected lifters, etc? I am sure you know this trick,,, Take a big screwdriver, put handle to ear and hold against various areas of engine. This will tell you where the noise is. (Mechanics Stethoscope) Good luck. Keep the posts comming. Fyi. I live just north of Victoria BC. Best cruising in the NW. .

Actually the original dinghy caddy is rated for 400 lbs. I’ve made modifications to it by working with the manufacturer to increase that by 100+ lbs. this new dinghy only weighs 50-75 lbs more than our old dinghy.

Not so. The dinghy caddy was rated at 400 lbs. Once up the transom shares the weight with the swim deck. This new dinghy is only 50-75 lbs more than the old one, and I’ve modified the davit to take another 100+ lbs.

The turbo seems to be fine. The turbo didn't even kick in since we left Stuart FL, until of course when I tried to blow it out that morning by going on plane.

You must be reading something into our comment that we are not intending. It was an honest question. We want to understand your point. Can you explain? Where is this restaurant you are talking about? We didn't go to a restaurant in this video. We respect everyone, regardless of age. What did we do that was so disrespectful?
