Hi Beau In England we call those torpedoes railway 'detonators' and you were half-right, they were put on the tracks as a safety device, but to alert the train driver, not people working on the line. If you think back in the day, once a train was running, the only way to signal it to stop, say for a blockage on the line, (where there wasn't any fixed signals or stations) was by someone swinging a lamp, but in bad conditions esp foggy weather, visual signals might not get the train stopped in time. So these detonators would be strapped to the lines in a series, with shorter distances between each one, and as the train ran over them they went off with a bang to alert the driver of problems on the line ahead. and I'm not sure but I think the shorter the distance between each one, more the urgency for the driver to stop quickly. Regards Chris

Very cool information, Chris and Marcel! Thank y'all so much for sharing! I often wondered about and contemplated different situations and logistics like that when I was younger, while learning about railroads in school and while playing on them in the itty-bitty town my Daddy grew up in; it's really nice to get answers to questions I'd forgotten about... At least a few times! 😄🤗😊💜💜💜

I love your river videos but it never ceases to amaze me how full of junk they are and how much silt. In Nova Scotia it is unusual to see a candy wrapper or a pop can on the bank or in the river for miles and there is little to no silt. I am looking out the window at 2 feet of snow so it is nice to hit Play and watch you in the river.

Railway thingies are called Detonators They were used in groups to warn the ENGINE driver there was danger ahead. ! going off means slow down, Two together means precede with caution Three means STOP. If A train broke down the guard would quickly run back along the track and lay out three dets. so the following train will not plow into him.

@AndrexT5 жыл бұрын
The little pendant with figures is Mary and Baby Jesus. The gold ring in a similar vein with the two crosses, probably has 'INRI' in the middle. INRI stems from the Latin phrase 'Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum' meaning 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews'. This was the notice Pontius Pilate nailed over Jesus as he lay dying on the cross. Great finds and a great day on the river.

As John put - the detonators were used to stop an approaching train from running into the one in front, which may have suffered a breakdown of some sort, especially when there is a large gap between light or semaphore signals. It was the guard's job to run back, about a mile, to place three det's spaced out, on the line. - - - - little figurine of mother and child - Mary and Jesus?

The signal was not so much to let you know a train was coming as you mentioned you could hear it. But it was to let work crews know for sure exactly where the train was. So you knew how far away for sure. You hear that, its time to clear off the tracks.

Beau, That little figure was probobly of the Virgin Mary. A tiny figure was easy to carry and pack, and might have been a "blessed" item from their church or another religious site. Not everyone wears a medallion for protection in their travels. You found a ring in the same area? might have dropped a valuables pouch. Hope you tagged that spot.
