I always wore my military inflatable PFD when we went out on my Dad's boat. My sister and brother teased me, my response was if your child goes overboard you don't have time to put one on you go get the kid immediately. The kids wore a PFD when on deck anytime. You never know.

@@therattyfire5468 Isn't one of those lifeboat groups in the UK volunteer? Is it the RNLI? If so that's super amazing. I've seen videos of those guys going out in absolutely insane conditions. If I ever moved to the UK and there is a lifeboat group that takes volunteer crew, signing up is the first thing id be doing. My 200 ton captains license probably doesn't mean anything over there, but I've got plenty of experience to offer at least. I've been fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time on a few occasions in my life both on my personal boat, and on the boat I used to work on, and let me tell you 100%..the look of relief and gratitude on the faces of the people you save is worth more money than exists on planet earth. Nothing but gratitude to the people who do that stuff for a living.

Respect to the Coast Guard. I was rescued by them A few years ago when the boat I was on had the motor fail at night 20 miles offshore. Didn’t have any communication but we left info with people on shore I told him to call the Coast Guard if we didn’t get them by certain time.. About midnight sure enough helicopter shows up. A few hours later the Coast Guard boat showed up and they towed us in for free! Must’ve sucked for those sailors who got woke up in the middle the night and had to hop on a boat. We got in at 5 AM after towing all night. They were pretty cool and we were lucky no charge at all or any form of documentation at all. They just said have a good night.

In UK Coastguard co-ordinate but it is the Volunteers of the RNLI that carry out the search and rescue. they would have put pumps aboard and towed back to safety of port, the only thing i see here that is different is it would have cost zero for the boat owner and a stiff word from Coastguard, thus getting back to my question why did USCG cutter do nothing?? apart from standby??? thus the way this panned out it was the Private tow boat which was actually the SAR unit here, and at cost to the boat owner.

@@mrt7936 Yup, TowBoat US is a private contractor, it only costs $150 a year or so (depending on boat) and there is no issue with Maritime law of 'Salvage' - if Tow Boat is on scene, let them do what they are paid for. @FubarGuy666
@FubarGuy666 4 жыл бұрын
Danny Veal Not too cautious at all. Like you, I have two automatic electric bilge pumps (with a float switch as those other automatic pumps come on and off all the damn tine which irritates the s $4! 7 out of me). Plus like you carry a spare battery and leads plus a spare pump with a long hose. Never needed the latter for me but it has saved two friends boats already. Plus a bucket LOL as the low tech never lets you down and I can use it as a loo! BTW seeing as you err on the cautious side how about installing a water tight bulkhead (If you havent already) between the engine bay and the rest of the boat? I hit an unidentified submerged object while motoring at night and broke the seal where the propshaft goes through the hull. Filled with water but the bulkhead kept the water in the engine bay and I managed to reach a sandy beach to "sink". The next day fixed it with calm. No probs all part of the joys of boating. The moral of the story being you can't be too cautious. I hope your friends learn from your excellent example.

A boat this size has at least 2 thru hulls and if one of those lets go no over the counter bilge pump is going to be able to keep the boat floating. Can't hurt to have as many as possible but it's also a smart idea to have an emergency plug. All different types exist and it's worth looking into. When a boat this size is taking on water it's usually that or a raw water cooling hose busting/leak.

A number of years ago I was fueling up at a local marina when a bunch of guys pull up in a 26 foot Proline with a 55 gallon drum in the cockpit. Right before we leave, one of them yells over to us asking how to get to the ocean. I already had an uneasy feeling seeing that fuel drum, and when they asked how to get to the ocean I wrote down the name of the boat. It was early morning and we were on our way out to the canyon. Just as we passed the 20 fathom line, I heard the CG trying to contact a vessel in distress. Sure enough, it was the same guys I saw earlier at the fuel dock. The story I heard was that "Hacksaw" went down and these guys had no GPS and no way to relay their position. It was only through the help of a party boat out there fishing that they were rescued.

On big water, I would always have a PLB like many private pilots also have. A last resort, but you set that off and it sends your exact GPS coordinates to NOAA and sets of the klaxons. Our son does remote mountain "hiking" to 10-12K feet and some kayaking on the Great Lakes (Superior and Michigan). We bought him one for peace of mind. That PLB can be the difference between life and death. Really good ones are only $250.00, waterproof, float, etc.....no brainer!
@mikel9567
@mikel9567 Жыл бұрын
They are good, but you are grossly misinformed about them. They don't notify NOAA or any other government agency. They notify the monitoring company who in turn notifies the appropriate agency. There has been numerous documented problems with them. I would still highly recommend them though, but like any other piece of safety gear, they aren't without their faults / limitations. Always pack redundant gear.

If they were taking on alot of water, trust me they would have sunk within minutes or would have been towed back with the boat 50% lower in the water, they might have had a small through hull leak that incapacitated the engines somehow and everyone panicked, thats why its good to have a manual bilge pump along side your electric bilge pump.

@@BOATSNAPS Thats a shame. In an area of the country and a state like Fla. where u can almost smell the franklins (Lol). With the exception of the coast guard they should be responsible for the money it takes to make the run...if it's a case of ignorance or negligence on your part. . Always check ur plug and ur boat before u roll out. Im a truck driver and I never move my tractor before I check it out. If i crash or crash someone..thats the FIRST thing DOT would look at. If u can afford a 250k or higher boat...u should have to pay to have ur ass rescued. Jmo. Love ur vids.

When do I need a Look-out? According to Rule 5, all vessels are responsible for maintaining a proper look-out at all times - this includes one-man crews, unmanned crafts, and recreational boats. The term look-out implies watching and listening so that he/she is aware of what is happening around the vessel. The emphasis is on performing the action, not on the person. Still, in all but the smallest vessels, the lookout is expected to be an individual who is not the helmsman and is usually located in the forward part of the boat, away from the distractions and noises of the bridge. While no specific location on a vessel is prescribed for the lookout, good navigation requires placement at the point best suited for the purpose of hearing and observing the approach of objects likely to be brought into collision with the vessel. The size of the vessel and crew effect this answer, however, the emphasis in every legal decision points to the need for a proper, attentive look-out. While the use of radar to evaluate the situation is implied in the requirement to use all available means, that is still understood to be secondary to maintaining a look-out by sight and hearing.

Pilots do a pre-flight check of all systems before even starting the motor. There's no reason why the same can't be done for boats. Always, always check comms if you're going offshore. Create a checklist and make sure the damned VHF antenna is up and a comms check is at the top of the list. Not only did this captain put his passengers at risk, he put the responders at risk by having them go all over creation trying to find them because his antenna was down.

I didn't want to go into the antenna being laid down. I already mentioned the poor quality of the audio is if a microphone has been stuck up next to a speaker with the volume turned up too high. There's actually an easier and more effective way to get audio to the video. On the other hand, Mariners are like CB radio operators Betty times and talk is iftar on the CB radio munching the microphone. Hold it 3-6 in away and talk in a normal voice. And yes, have your antenna up. 55 years as an amateur radio extra class has taught me a great deal. I'm happy to share it in a pleasant way when asked.
