Boat Surveys are not sexy, but I did my best to make it fun to watch the process. It is a long slow day of checking out each individual system on a boat. Technically we just watch the marine surveyor check all the systems. There are a lot of systems, the bottom, the standing rigging, the running rigging, the lights, the anchors, the deck, the tender or dinghy, the inboard diesel motor, the out board gas motor for the dingy, the VHF, the stereo, the DC power, the AC power, the Air Conditioner, the Refrigeration, the head, the fresh water, the seacocks, the starter battery, the house bank batteries, the sails. The list goes on and on and they all have their own specs. A good survey takes quite a long time. It is well worth it. After, the first survey we had I would never buy a boat without one.The key is a good, honest, knowledgeable surveyor. This is what it is like. Not that exciting until you realize you have found the perfect boat! Next thing to do... go sailing! On step closer to living on a yacht.

I have stood in on two boat surveys, one when I was buying my last boat, and also when I sold it. Two different surveyors. This guy Rick, seemed to by very thorough and meticulous. I would hire him.

I hired a world-renown surveyor to examine a wooden 40-foot yawl and after I bought the boat we learned that he missed extensive rot at the chain plates, horn timber and bow. It was a financial and emotional calamity.

This guys knows his stuff, talk about thorough, dont know if your engine is raw water cooled or cooled with antifreeze via heat exchanger, with a heat exchanger you can get a drippless shaft seal and never worry about that leaky shaft ever again, congrats on the boat just subbed to your channel,

Just looking at his arms this surveyer knows the the Sea and everything single minute detail of what condition any boat is in. Salutes to him what a example of professionalism and seamanship 12:16 A splice ?...at the junction? That's a careless duct tape fix up. That's gotta get work out correctly. While this inspector more or less knows his job, he is mostly convinced he is right. And that puts his vision in a different light. His complacency very clearly influences his work. He starts the survey with the boat's reputation as his guide. That is like tasting wine with the label in front of you. No go.

He likes that certain class of boat seemed very knowledgeable of the history of its creation etc. He may have some bias but will know the cons and encourage fixing them to make sure that at minimum keeps it reputation as a favorite

So awesome! I've started looking into sailboats myself and I saw an IP as an option. Nice find! Glad you dont have to fix up that much stuff. How much did the IP run you? Also, would you be able to do a little something about yearly maintenance costs for your boat? Good luck on your journeys!!

Your surveyer Rick is amazing! It seems he did a great job for you pointing out everything wrong with the boat and really that's what you want. You owe him a beer, I wish my surveyer had been that thorough I would have saved thousands of dollars in the long run. Looks like you got a good boat that's gonna take care of you when you need it! Because a lot of surveyers out there don't give you a thorough survey. Looks to me like he got a good job. I like to thank people who do a good job. Sounds like you might "The Boss From Hell" like the TV show says! My parants always taught me if you can't say something nice keep your mouth shut, but I'll make an acception for you Josef!

@@Josef_R - hate to break it to you, but boat surveys on most boats run anywhere from $20-$30 per vessel foot...and on this little thing (26-ft) it may be so small, that it hit some 'minimum charge' as opposed to just being 'length rated' for $ 500. (like $750 minimum charge). If you can't afford $750 for a vessel you can (and may) take around the world...then there's a high-chance you probably don't need to be out there in a boat, to start with (by comparison, my Chevy Silverado costs me around $2,600 a year, A YEAR, to keep insured and tagged...so a once-per-decade survey isn't 'outrageous' at $750).

13:08 That pressure gauge at the high pressure side of the regulator is as good as meaningless. Since propane is condensed to liquid in the bottle, the pressure is the same right up until the bottle is empty. The only way to tell how much propane you've got is to weigh the bottle (if it's not transparent so you can see the liquid level).

Any boat, even a brand new one, is an ongoing collection of problems, projects, and expenses. Nature of the beast. This boat seems exceptionally nice. If the surveyor doesn't find things, he's not doing his job.

Propane on a boat is very dangerous but sometimes a necessary evil. The propane tank and regulator (the most common leak points) seen in a compartment and in low recessed area that could conceivably flood the bilge and lower living areas with flammable gas kinda freaks me out. Propane belongs on deck preferably away from hatches so if there was a leak at the tank or regulator the heavy flammable gasses would pour off the boat into the water. They make deck lockers that direct the gas overboard or if deck space is limited fabricate tank holds the tank out over the stern. Flammable fume detector(s) should be properly installed in any boat that uses gasoline or propane onboard imho.

I have a question about getting a surveyor. Did you give the boat owner an offer and then get the survey? And they depending on how the survey goes and everything checks out ok, then you go with the deal?

+Richie O'Donnell That is exactly right. In our case we made an offer contingent on the boat passing the survey. Basically, that means we had a survey done and if it showed what we expected and nothing over budget or unanticipated came out of the survey so we went through with the deal. If there are negative findings in the survey you could renegotiate. We did not, because I felt like we had a good deal and the survey showed the condition to be as expected. Hi Emma, the survey on the boat we ended up buying was about $600. They usually charge by the foot. We had another boat survey before Dodi and that one was about $800. It was a bigger boat. I would call around and ask some surveyor for there pricing. They also may charge higher rates for older boats and for travel time, so keep all that in mind. Good luck!
