Conventional savors are attached directly to your lower unit. Everytime your trailer hits a bump the energy is transferred from your tires, through the trailer, through the transom savor directly to the lower unit. No thanks. And while I agree The Wedge does take the stress off the hydraulics, it also reduces the load on the transom simply by absorbing the bounce of the motor in transit. The cantilever method is also applied here. Many people say, that considering the torque that boat transoms are designed for, that any 'transom savor' is a gimmick.

This has been an ongoing argument ever since the first Hyd/Transom savers came out several years ago. Several argue that the forces on the transom are worse on the water than when trailering. I tend to disagree and here's why: When trailering the motor is "Tilted" up past the "Trim" raising the lower unit way up and out. When running in the water the lower unit when "Trimmed" out is nowhere near as far out as it is when "Tilted", so the force is directed in more of a downward direction instead of a twisting outward force (Out on the upper and in on the lower) exerted on the upper end of the motor clamp. The water also acts as a cushion to dampen that force. Springs and possibly shocks (on some trailers) work to dampen the downward force but can only do so to the extent of their travel which is much shorter/stiffer than that of what water can do. When trailering, the boat and trailer become one unit when properly strapped down. An actual transom saver braces the lower unit and adds stability to the lower unit preventing that twisting outward force which a Hyd saver does not and cannot do. A hyd saver does not and cannot prevent the outward force exerted on the upper mount bolts of the motor clamp because it simply does not brace against the added weight exerted when you hit a bump when trailering. All that being said, boat manufacturers have gotten away from wood transoms over the years and near all have incorporated composite structures which, "They Say" is strong enough to withstand on water and trailering forces any motor exerts onto the transom. This may be so, but it still does not negate the fact that an unsupported lower unit when "Tilted" in the trailering position exerts a twisting outward force on the upper section of the motor clamp which is different when the motor is basically straight up and down.

Logic at work. Simple physics Stand up straight with a 20 lb dumbell in your hand and your arm with the weight perpendicular to the floor, jump up and down a few times. No biggie, easy for your shoulder to absorb. Now do that same scenario with you holding the weight 45 degrees out. So now how stable can you hold that weight while jumping? Same amount of weight. Different applied forces. Physics.

@@WickedWood Great, great analogy. Thanks.
@TW14137
@TW14137 Жыл бұрын
@@WickedWoodForce on a transom is not the same as force on your shoulder...pivot point is in a different place. In the weight scenario, none of the weight ever makes it over center, until the weight is over your head. With the motor, tilting it up actually makes the force more "straight down" on the transom, because of where the pivot point is. I'll bet you can't hold up that Mercury with one arm, but I bet you could balance it, if centered over the transom quit easily. The upper half of that Merc weights much more than the lower half, and as it's tilted, more weight is being transferred straight down, vs being leveraged back and down. You are right on one thing though...simple physics. However, I am not saying that you should trailer with the motor trimmed way up, only that it is not the same as holding out a weight at arms length.

First of all, GREAT side by side of the difference between using a transom saver and not using one. That in itself should get the point across. While the wedge is easier to install and remove, it does NOT have the support to match the transom saver. As Steven Palmer mentioned the forces burning down the lake being more than going down the highway, I would suggest thinking about the following: If you take a big wave on the lake, yes, there is extra force being put on the transom. BUT, the water itself will absorb a lot of that pressure. When you hit a chuck hole or bump on the highway, there is nothing to absorb the force like what the water will do. Yes, shocks, springs and tires will take some of it, but the transom will take the most of it. IMO. I'll stick with the transom saver over the wedge.

I followed behind a guy pulling his boat down the highway with the outboard tilted up and no actual transom saver connected to the trailer. Everytime he hit a good sized bump and his trailer bounced up and down, the motion was highly exaggerated on the outboard itself. The motor yanked up and down so hard I now understand how transoms are cracked and even ripped loose. A typical outboard weighs 500+ pounds and is almost 6 foot tall from the skeg to the cowling. When you put an actual connection from your lower unit down to the trailer itself, it takes the twisting motion out of the equation when big bumps are encountered. A true transom saver will stabilize the whole boat, motor, and trailer into one package and allow all the weight to use the springs under the trailer to absorb the load. It's basic geometry. If you don't have something connecting the lower unit to the trailer itself, you aren't doing jack for the transom...the weight is still yanking up and down on the transom and that definitely is not saving it. I still can't believe there are guys who seriously don't get it. If you think you don't need a real transom saver (an actual connection from the lower unit to the trailer) then have someone pull your boat down a rough road and follow it...watch the outboard yank up and down and know that all that stress is directly twisting on your transom.

best transom saver ever made was made here in baton rouge.la. was constructed of round tubing, was spring loaded therefor the spring allowed you to trim motor down compressing spring,actually locking motor down with hyd. pressure!! if your motor moves up & down at this point you have a check valve malfunction in the power trim manifold.think about it if you can run boat 50 mph down the lake trim your motor up & it holds that position,if it doesnt you have fluid bleeding off motor gos down !! there is also an impact valve in the system,in case you hit something it alows motor to raise up so you dont shear butt. end of boat off. O.M.C CORP. IN EARLY TO MID 90S were blaming transom savers for their gear housings collapsing where the transom saver riding on gear case(directly in front of water pick ups).seen several motors in warranty get turned down for repair,larger motors had built in trailering bracket!! I have a 1997 115 intruder that i have used the trailering bracket it actually mates to to clamp brackets that attatch mottor to transom,when trimming down my trim locks with no movement,owned this boat since 2008 & have no transom issues & travel probably the worst roads in country (south louisiana).

Finally a video that shows the roller guide install. I wondered if you just wedge it in there or if there was a bracket you had to attach to lock it to the roller guide but I guess its a matter of lowering the engine tight against it and just hope your motor don't bounce up and let it fall out
@blueangel4545
@blueangel4545 2 жыл бұрын
Some are made with a block style attachment that screws to the trailer frame directly and the arm section to the motor locks into that bracket with a pin. The roller style has a u shaped part that goes over the roller and has a cable and pin to lock it in. Either way that arm to the motor can not move once you trim the motor down into the jaws with enough pressure so the motor can not be moved left or right by hand. The motor would have to come of the transom for that brace to fall out.

Great video but you should’ve mentioned one important thing and that’s buying a pair of wedges as you might say that go over your steering rods on both sides of the motor. This is very important if you have SeaStar steering or equivalent as these wedges keep your motor from turning while trailering down the road. If your motor turns after time it will crack your square tubing below the yoke that goes on the lower unit.

I disagree with the transom saver putting less stress on the transom. When the motor is trimmed up and supported by a mechanical support, (which my Evinrude has) there is close to a 50/50 balance directly over the transom and the force from trailering would be directly up and down. In the video when he is using the wedge, he rocks the motor from the lower unit up and down creating a rocking motion. When he is using the transom saver he is only pushing down, if he lifted up and down he would still get flex on the transom. Just my thought.

The arguments against the transom saver defy physics. The boat is fastened securely to the boat at the back and the boat moves with the trailer. The motor being mounted to the transom becomes a lever independent of the trailerand induces tremendous foces on the transom. A 3rd point of contact minimizes the lever effect. The hydralic saver does reduce the impact, but not nearly to the same degeee as a proper transom saver.

When a motor is in its operating position 100% of its weight is behind the transom. The transom is designed to handle the rotational and downward load. When a motor is pushed to full throttle from a dead stop, a much greater rotational load is applied to the transom. The transom is designed to handle this load. When an outboard is tilted up, the powerhead moves to a position in front of the transom and a much more balanced position which reduces rotational loading to a tiny fraction of the rotational load when the boat is operating. The purpose of a transom saver is to hold the motor is this more balanced position, to eliminate any bounce that might occur and to keep the lower unit from striking the ground. At least in my experience both the stick transom saver and wedge transom saver performs these functions well

Absolutely required if you have to drive through South Carolina on I 95. The worst state in the nation when it comes to roads and 95 is the absolute toilet when it comes to interstate highways. You have to have a transom saver to go through South Carolina. No ifs ands or butts as my dad used to say.

i like how you bounce on it the first time and the trailer is moving pretty good. the second time the trailer barely moves. i guess that transom saver also stiffens your trailer springs. what about the extra hydraulic pressure you are creating? not sure it is designed for that.

Hell I have a 20 foot center console. It's an inboard/outboard. Even though just the lower unit hangs I still use a transom saver. It's just easier on everything especially if you have a quality transom saver like I do. Mine is probably 30 years old built nice and solid by a company called pro form . I don't think they are around anymore. I was trying to look it up and couldn't find anything on it but it's so much better built than the ones they sell today . It really is a smart investment it saves the transom and your tilt rams like he said. I see alot of boats around my town motor just bouncing away 😂. I cringe 😬 and I live in a lake town so I see it all the time . Nice boats shitty boats and in-between. Some people are just ignorant others seem to just not care about their boat or trailers for that matter . I see them rusted out .. wheels canted because bad bearings, bent rims and missing wheel studs.... No safety chains or lockpin.. I really try to take care of my rig and keep everything well maintained. It's worth it to me to avoid missing time I could be spending on the water instead of on the side of the road . Wheel bearings and tires seem to be the most neglected things .

Question, if you don’t have to raise your engine, for ground clearance issues is it better to keep it down in the normal run position? And this is on an inflatable boat..
@cowboyup6438

I'll have to re-read it, but I think the manual on my 2019 150 Mercury says to trailer in the down position if you have adequate skeg clearance. Check your motor manual to be sure.

transom saver helps the transom and the hydraulics both by locking the motor in place, not sure why folks would wanna use a hydraulic saver only makes no sense, although ive seen people say the reason they use em is cause they dont like the look of the transom saver lol to me its form over fashion haha

Great video. Just about two months ago I watched a person with a tandem axle trailer and 21 foot bass boat with a 300 HP outboard going down the highway, motor at full up tilt and no transom saver. If the driver had seen the movement on that motor and had any common sense he would have stopped at the closest retailer of transom savers and bought one. I could not catch this person to relay the message. No doubt in my mind they will have issues if they don`t rectify this situation.

Evinrude® Owner’s Manual Trailering Trailer your boat with the outboard in a vertical position. If your trailer does not provide adequate road clearance, the outboard can be trailered by using the tilt support or an accessory trailering bracket. IMPORTANT: Whenever using the tilt support or an accessory trailering bracket, the outboard must be restrained. Bouncing during transport will damage the outboard and boat’s transom. Yamaha® Owner’s Manual Do not use the tilt support lever or knob when trailering the boat. The outboard motor could shake loose from the tilt support and fall. If the motor cannot be trailered in the normal running position, use an additional support device to secure it in the tilt position. The outboard motor should be trailered and stored in the normal running position. If there is insufficient road clearance in this position, then trailer the outboard motor in the tilt position using a motor support device such as a transom saver bar. Mercury® Owner’s Manual Trailering Boat/Outboard. Trailer your boat with the outboard tilted down in a vertical operating position. If additional ground clearance is required, the outboard should be tilted up using an accessory outboard support device. Refer to your local dealer for recommendations. Additional clearance may be required for railroad crossings, driveways, and trailer bouncing. IMPORTANT: Do not rely on the power trim/tilt system or tilt support lever to maintain proper ground clearance for trailering. The outboard tilt support lever is not intended to support the outboard for trailering. Suzuki® Owner’s Manual Damage can occur if you use the tilt lever other than when the boat is moored or is otherwise stationary. The tilt lever relieves pressure from the power trim and tilt and should only be used when the boat is stationary. Do not use the tilt lever when trailering your boat and motor. NOTICE. If you use the tilt lever to hold the motor in the fully tilted up position when trailering the boat, towing motion or poor road surfaces may cause unexpected tilt lock release, resulting in damage to the motor and the tilt lock mechanism. Never use the tilt lever to hold the motor in the fully tilted up position when trailering the boat. Use a transom saver bar or similar device to support the weight of the motor. Honda® Owner’s Manual Use an outboard motor support bar to prevent the outboard motor from moving while trailering the boat. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for using an outboard motor support bar. The preferred method is to leave the engine in the normal running position, but if there is insufficient road clearance, you can tilt the outboard motor using a commercially available outboard motor support bar available through your dealer. Tohatsu® Owner’s Manual Trailering in the tilted position may cause damage to the outboard motor, boat, etc. The tilt support device supplied on your outboard motor is not intended for towing. It is intended to support the outboard motor while the boat is docked, beached, etc. When transporting a boat on a trailer with the outboard motor attached, disconnect the fuel line from the out board motor beforehand and keep the outboard motor in the vertical or on a transom saver bar. Every owner’s manual except EVINRUDE (RIP) shows a picture of a bar type transom saver attached to the trailer. EVINRUDE has its own aftermarket transom trailering bracket but the lower unit still has to be secured to the boat or trailer to prevent bounce. These were from 40-75 HP motor Owner’s Manuals, but applies to all sizes.

My outboard has a metal latch that flips up for Transit on the trailer that locks it in the up position. Is this the same thing as the hydraulic saver?
@holdenthompson1235
@holdenthompson1235 3 жыл бұрын
That's actually a latch for a boat that doesn't have the hydraulic pump. So when you pull it up by hand you can flip that to hold the motor up. Your case it would act as a hydraulic saver. But, not its purpose
@machew2009
@machew2009 2 жыл бұрын

@machew2009
@machew2009 2 жыл бұрын
@@holdenthompson1235 not true that is also on alot of motors that have hydraulic tilt for you to use to help protect your hydraulic and alot of times different then the latch you would find on manual tilt because the manuel tilt ones can usually be activated while engine is still down where the ones on outboards with tilt and trim can only be latch when motor is all the way up

Google "Outboard steering stops". I made my own out of Carlon PVC conduit. These are for hydraulic steering systems. If you have cable steering, you can just secure your steering wheel in the straight position.

I think that would also be considered a Hydraulic Saver as well. I used them and a transom saver on my Pathfinder 22' WITH a transom saver and never had a problem. I'm going to look into the Seastar Steering savers that someone mentioned above to keep motor from turning while trailering.
