Hi Stefan-Welcome to the BoatingBanter upholstery series. I am glad the videos are of some help. You are one of the few that watch the entire series. I think that is a great idea as the videos do have a progression to them that allows you to go from basic projects to the more complex. Stay tune I will be completing the "Center Console Helm Seat Redo" in a couple of days. I have several additional projects in the works we will be conducting the next several months. I hope you find them helpful Larry

larry I really appreciate the videos... Question. I am not a fan of piping. For my project: a center engine ski boat. I was planning to do all my seams either as just an inside stitch or as an inside stitch with an added single top stitch. Is there a reason this will be problematic? I am surprised its not done like that more often, simpler than a french seam but I would think a lot more strength and looks better (in my opinion) that just piping. your thoughts?

I think a good made french seam is looking really great, but the one you describe is not bad either. About piping I have tested to make it, but every time after a few inches the thread tangled in the needle, every time. Without piping I tested to saw 12 layers of vinyl, no problem at all. At last I found the problem, I was using V92 thread and a 110 needle, when I changed to a 125 needle that problem was solved ... I learn by trail and error, it works but takes a bit more time, but what I learn I never forget ;-)

It is your boat so construct the upholstery anyway you like. Piping looks nice and I feel gives the piece a more upscale appearance. A double seam is an very good alternative and easier to do than adding piping. The double adds twice the strength to the seam so will last longer and you can dress it up with using different colored thread if that appeals to you. Being you are tackling a ski boat, I would suggest you start with the cushions to hon your skills prior to doing the engine cover which is hard to do. Make sure you bring each piece back to the cover, lay it down next to the previous piece and trim if needed before moving on. Good luck

Yes the right needle with the right thread is critical. "Sailrite.com" has a very good guide to the correct matches in their catalog you can order. You much have a monster sewing machine if you can sew 12 layers of vinyl. I have never seen the need for sewing that thick of a piece but sounds like you are ready for anything. Good luck with your projects

Thanks for the tips and words of encouragement. I hope to start the project in the next two weeks. Still assembling materials. My plan was to start with the smaller cushions and work my way up to do the motor cover 2nd to last as its complicated and the driver seat last as its in pretty good shape.
