On my boat (36 foot I/0 - (twin Mercruisers) cruiser) its a bit like Capt. Quint in Jaws - its my vessel, my rules. (I'm the skipper- NO BOOZE!, for anyone unless the vessel is anchored up, or at the slip. ) Any sign of inebriation with those aboard, and I turn the vessel back to port (and I DON'T mean I'm turning it to the left!) -that is at any time, under way, or anchored. As captain the safety of all aboard is in my hands. ALL children shall wear PFD's, no exception. All non swimmers shall wear PFD's. I have the type of PFD's that inflate when in contact with water - they are very comfortable. Everyone shall be briefed on where the throwable life ring is and what to do. All state and federal boating regulations shall be followed. Have FUN on the water but do it safely! Fun can turn to tragedy in an instant. We ALL pay the price for morons on the water, with higher insurance premiums.

I would like to see blue top legend wearing a deadman’s switch bracelet just in case she gets thrown out of the boat. She handles her whaler really well but safety should always be prioritized. Just a suggestion. When one gets thrown it happens so fast there nothing you can do. One second in the boat the next in the water with the boat going who knows where only one thing for certain your not going with it.

The rule of navigation is the larger vessel with a deeper draft and less maneuverable has the right of way in restrictive waterway in the channel. The Jet Ski should have stayed to the right of the waterway channel in the shallower water and give way to the deeper draft vessel overtaking it.

I remember going on a whale watch and got my tickets early. A lady was PISSED she was not first in line. I got my tickets, she then got hers and ran in a mad dash to be first on line on the boat. She darted to the front of the boat and we chose to sit in the middle. It was our plan from the start. That lady at the bow was warned as well. She appeared she didn't care. Then this happened and she was soaked. We had a good laugh.

Thank very entertaining, I skippered a 17’ fibreglass run about with a 130 on the back. Done all of these types of breaks and made a few mistakes but always had the ability to know when to gun it or pick the moment. Had a big southerly spring up around midday which put the ‘smarts’ in the bar for a few. But there is always the idiot who really had no idea about going out and sitting still and waiting for the break. Anyway he got smashed, literally his 18’ + run about got sat on its arse vertical then pushed right back to empty the contents ! Everyone help retrieve his gear from along the shore and he was lucky not to be seriously injured. Thanks it’s always fun!

Are you not aware of the rules of the road? 1. The boat was overtaking the jet ski. That alone means he should have slowed and followed, especially in a narrow channel. 2. He passed jet ski to the port side, meaning the boat had the jet ski in its “danger zone, 2 points abaft the starboard beam” This also means the boat and its skipper are totally in the wrong and a danger to general navigation if they do not know those simple rules. Jet Ski has the right of way both are considered power boats. It's up to the vessel behind to avoid them and alert their intent which they did wrong. broncosguru is correct. A PWC operates under the same rules as any other powercraft. Size doesn't matter. The yacht should have given two horn blasts to indicate passing on the left. If passing wasn't possible the overtaken PWC has the right of way.

Colreg 34 a vessel nearing an area of channel or fairway where other vessel may be obscured by an intervening obstruction shall sound one prolonged blast. The Jet Ski riding low in high waves in the middle of the channel would have been obscured to the larger vessel with its bow high in the air in high waves entering the channel.

I'm not sure of the rules in the US but if in Australia the jetski technically has right of way.. but the most important unwritten rule is right of might... if it's way bigger than you you best be looking out... a slow jetski made the boat captain nervous... plus a jetski makes a good artificial reef.. all they're good for really...

Yes the ski had the right of way because smaller vessels only yield to larger vessels if oncoming do dont run up on a smaller vessel and expect them to move from the front of you especially in a inlet

Warning isnt enough, the Captain is obligated to slow, and turn the vessel around as he is responsible for the passengers safety. If they wont follow orders and put themselves at risk the Captain must end the journey. Thats a tight inlet, you must maintain speeds safe for the conditions and the overtaking vessel must give way to the jetski. Lots of mistakes here... that inlet should be minimum wake zone

You do realize that turning around in the middle of a tight and rough inlet is extremely dangerous? Also, going too slow in a following sea in a rough inlet could result in getting pitched sideways or potentially capsizing. The jet ski needs to get out of the way.

Blasting a 60ft yacht at full plane is not a speed safe for conditions, the rules state, YOU MUST DEVIATE FROM THE RULES TO AVOID A COLLISION. That means you can plow thru dumb boaters and jetskis who arent following the rules. I may not remember every rule but that was one that I committed to memory as it was very important.
