Also, what is your take on Awlgrip SE and clear coat for the highest possible gloss finish?
@dandesantis71052 жыл бұрын
Hi Frankie, great job as always. Thank you for your detailed explainations and showing all the prep and paints steps. I notice you do two things that are contrary to Awlcraft 2000 TDS guidelines. The first is you allow a 15 minute induction period with top coats. I read the TDS several times and could not find a reference to do that. It's clearly stated for 545, but not for top coats. The other deviation is your first coat. You apply a tack coat. Awlgrip videos and the TDS state the first coat should be wet and to not apply a dust coat. Obviously, you achieve great results with your process steps. I'm curious to hear your thoughts or comments on this and if you tried a first coat wet coat, and resorted back to a tack coat for better results. Thank you!

PRODUCT DATA SHEET AWLCRAFT® 2000 ACRYLIC URETHANE TOPCOAT: Spray application: Apply a light, smooth, slightly wet tack coat to the surface. Allow tack coat to “flash off” 15- 45 minutes. Allow the second coat to “flash off” 30-45 minutes until only slightly tacky before applying the third coat. Coats two and three are not “full, wet” coats. The second coat is a slightly heavy tack coat with the third coat just wet enough to obtain full hide (opacity) or color coverage. More than 3 coats may be required to achieve full hide (opacity) or color coverage. The Awlgrip application guide (page 49) says the same thing.

Everyone wants to paint but no one wants to put the time in on prep . Of course without the proper prep you may as well not pick up the spray gun to shoot the top coat . I hope that folks watching these get a good understand of the prep and just how much time goes into that to get a good job in the end... It sucks , believe me I know as do you , but there are no short cuts to doing this... Glad to see someone putting in the work instead of videos on how you can short cut your way through it.. Great video I recently started spraying awlgrip, you need some walk boards brother make your life a little easier, you ever use a pressure pot? That’s what we use and our lead painter uses everything way to high and you have to spray from a foot away from the boat to not get runs but it always looks orange peel, . Went to the awlgrip applicator 1 class and realized how close you need to spry to get optimum shine and minimum texture, but try being 35 and tell a 55 year old he’s been doing it wrong for 20 years , so I just do what I’m told until I get my own projects. Great content im subscribing.

Between each coat are you mixing a new batch of AWLgrip? Whats the time between your coats?
@boatpaintingrestorationwit3029 Жыл бұрын
No. I mix up one batch and it usually gets me through to the end. Depending on temperature depends on how long I wait between coats. On average I’d say on a boat this size I’ll spray a coat and take a 10-15 minute break and then spray the next coat. I always do the thumb test and if no paint sticks to my finger then it’s ready for the next coat. Keep your batch of paint in the shade and out of the sun and re-stir before putting it in the pot👌

Grind the area on the inside and apply a couple layers of 1708. 5 inch’s by 12 will be more than enough. Then backfill the gap from the outside and grind and repeat. Some might consider it over kill but I always feel like more the better. Then finish it off however you choose. Wether you use gelcoat or prime and paint. ( easy fix)👌

Hi Frankie, by finishing the primer with the scotch pad, is the primer not too shiny for the top coat paint to grip to? Thanks
@boatpaintingrestorationwit30293 жыл бұрын
Hey bud. It leaves a excellent surface for the paint to grip to! When looking from a side view of what you have prepped it should look shiny. However this is the prep process for spraying. You don’t go as fine when rolling or brushing. 400 grit is a great finishing step/scotchbrite equivalent. Some people go as high as 600.

The acryl putty is a finish glazing putty that is porous free and can be top coated over without having to worry about pinholes. It’s only good for really small imperfections and pinholes. I only use it at the very end before spraying. It’s easy to use and comes in a tube. Ya don’t have to worry about it kicking on you and you don’t have to keep mixing up and cleaning knives. It saves a lot of time and works great 👌

Frankie , awesome info for guys like me (DIY), I have binge watched all your videos and subscribed for you new ones. I have a question . I have a 1996 2300SR Deep V MAXUM it came from the Florida coast and I live inland SC, on fresh water lake. This boat had about 4 layers of bottom coat and I would say none of it was done properly. It is gel-coat and I am in the process of taking it all the way down to the gel-coat. Should I put 3 or 4 coats of primer ( what kind of primer) and then use Petite's vivid bottom paint. My theory is it stays in the water 6 to 7 months and gel coat is porous and oxidizes. When I do the top coat I plan to use an acrylic as you stated in one of your videos . Any guidance would be appreciated , so much info on internet you read it all and your head is like mush trying to understand it all. LOL
@boatpaintingrestorationwit30294 жыл бұрын
Just now seeing this message bud. After you get it back to gelcoat I would recommend barrust 235. Interprotect 2000 will work also. Then bottom paint that you choose. After primer I would use a hard copper paint and do one coat of a different color then your finish color. That way whenever you see the first layer of bottom paint that’s when you know it’s time to recoat. Hope this helps. Good way to minimize paint buildup.

Hi Frankie, great vids! I saw you sprayed the awlcraft with the orange accuspray nozzle (1.4) , but awlgrip recommends a 1.1 nozzle, do you think the 1.4 is better? Greetings from Greece!
@boatpaintingrestorationwit30293 жыл бұрын
Thanks Greg. Depending on the boat and color I’ll either use the 1.2 or the 1.4. Just all depends. The 1.1 is fairly new with the accuspray setup and I do have them but haven’t used one yet. I like the 1.4 because it really throws the product out good. It’s great for bigger jobs. Once you have the paint flow and air pressure right, it atomizes perfect and lays down nice. I like using the smaller caps for repairs and smaller jobs. I’ve topcoated in the past with 1.8 and 2.0 with jet black and flag blue and they turned out awesome. These were over 40 ft. Just have to make sure the gun is dialed in. Everyone is different. The bigger the spray cap, the higher your air is and the lower your paint flow is. Hope this helps 👌

Sorry for late response. Just now seeing this question. If you don’t plan on grinding them out and just want to do a quick fix ( no telling how long it will last ) then I would brush epoxy in the cracks and let it dry, and then sand and use whatever filler you prefer and glaze it tight. It will hold up for a while. Maybe 6 months, maybe 10 years. Just all depends. This is called bridging the cracks. They will come back eventually. Nothing is guaranteed unless you fix them properly. When are you going to put up a video of doing this boats bootstripe and swim platform
@boatpaintingrestorationwit30294 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Tommy I was crunched for time and knocked the stripe out without doing a video. I also got the platform and transom primed. And painting this coming week. It’s one of those situations where I video when I can or I just proceed with the process so I can move on with the next job. Sorry about that. It sucks but is what it is. I make the videos when I can.

@@boatpaintingrestorationwit3029 That is OK I have watched your videos. for years and that is why we went with you guys. you are no question the best in Virginia at what you do. I am so glad that We get to have you make our boat look SO GOOD> Thank you brother .....
@boatpaintingrestorationwit30294 жыл бұрын
Tommy, it just dawned on me as to who you are. Lol. The grey around the platform and emblem in nonskid as well as the lower section of transom makes a huge difference. It is gonna be nice once it’s all finished and back in the water. Doing the platform and transom was a great decision 👌

@@boatpaintingrestorationwit3029 Frankie We looked at a lot of guys your films and your eye for detail is why we picked you guys. I have never seen a Video ( may have done one I did not see) of doing the small detail work of the swim platform . You should do a quick one at the end showing what you did it should be incredible. Thank you for all you do brother. T

what sander do you recommend? 5" or 6" ? RO / DA? Brand? I have the compressor for anything, and a good vac...but if you were to buy only one sander, what would you recommend?
@boatpaintingrestorationwit30293 жыл бұрын
I like the dynabrade air sanders and it’s also nice to have a electric porter cable Variable speed sander for when needed as well. When I get to work tomorrow I can be more specific and let you know the dynabrade I think is the best. Everyone has their preferences though. 👌
@ericmcniff13 жыл бұрын
@@boatpaintingrestorationwit3029 that would be very helpful thanks. I am leaning toward a dynabrade 5" RO with 3/16" dia , vac ready (im inside mostly)

I use the MDL : x61H 6” by 3/16” 12,000 RPM S/N: Dl15213 Hope this helps. Get a interface pad to go with it for all finish sanding 👌👌

You wear eye protection when spraying outside?? I only wear eye protection when spraying inside tanks etc. doesn’t happen often. Do you paint? Curious as to why that’s even a question? Lol
