On June 2nd, 2024, Bob, Ken, and Chuck, the founders of Hermit Woods, embarked on an unparalleled adventure. Their goal was to ride the Mid-Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route from south to north. If time permitted, they also hoped to complete the first four or five sections of the Northeast Backcountry Discovery Route. Both of these routes span over a 1,000 miles, designed to take riders deep into the backcountry, traversing small paved roads, dirt roads, and occasionally, non-maintained class six and four roads. This journey allowed them to see the country in ways many never do, venturing off the beaten path. They carried camping gear and camped most nights, also utilizing the Bunk-a-Biker program to stay with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts and making a few hotel stops for showers and to clean off the dust.
You might ask, what does this have to do with wine or Hermit Woods? For those who know Bob, Ken, and Chuck, the answer is clear and simple-it has everything to do with it. The three founders have been on an epic journey together since the day they met, encompassing everything from founding the winery to managing its growth, all while maintaining a strong partnership and friendship. These journeys, or side trips, provide the critical time they need to step away from day-to-day operations, think critically about the winery and its future, and nurture their friendship. In fact, some of the most important decisions about the business and its future are made during these adventures.
