As a poet I can't help but be moved by this song! Possibly Dylan's greatest song! "She opened up a book of poems and handed it to me written by an Italian poet from the thirteenth century and every one of them words rang true and flowed like burnin' coal pouring off of every page like it was written in my soul from me to you, Tangled up in Blue" JJ poetryman

From the clacking of Bob's coat buttons to the hypnotic D/D7 progression in the chorus. From the love drenched poet's carefully chosen words to his footloose and fancy free ability to quickly paint a visual picture. From top to bottom Bob is truly a legend that has pushed the limits of our willingness to look ourselves in the mirror. What a great human being to witness walk this Earth!

My god this is The Version. He sounds like the ghost of everyday great Americans singing and the guitar in that open E tuning sounds like a tolling bell. It puts the hair on my neck up, a chill goes down the spine and a teardrop falls for all that we’ve lost.

From the New York sessions, isn't it? A fantastic version, but Bob has changed this so many times, different lyrics, chord positions, tempos, feels. See Eyolf Østrem for an extended rundown of the different lyrics and directions to some superb and unusual versions - Real Live is agreat place to start, but the ballad version from the 1978 world tour is also a standout.

When you break it down into basics.... cords, music, lyrics, poetry.... this is my greatest "song" of all time. It's #1 for me. This version epitomizes the beauty of this song so much and not only how easy it is to sing with but also how difficult it is to replicate. Dylan is the greatest songwriter of all time. And this song has the musical chops to stick with him. It's just a top notch song from beginning to end.

Love everything Dylan has done and does since I was in the 6th grade. Long time ago. My English text book cover was his Nashville Skyline album/vinyl cover. My all time favorite song of his; especially when he sings it in "first person". Really hits home. I lived it!

this is a classic song ; i was 19 when Dylan's album Blood on Tracks came out and i was knocked out.. so good.. i was flipped and fel in love with all the songs of the albulm. To this day i admire it as the best ever Dylan album..Tangled up in Blue is full of emotions, simple life events,,, a story simple in a hook up melody...

I was 19 in 1975 as well. I wasn't a huge Dylan at the time, which is just a little ironic, since I grew up in Woodstock, NY starting in 1962 when my dad, an engineer, accepted a job in nearby Kingston, NY. But I've been a very dedicated fan over the past twenty years or so. Got a chance to see him live in Phoenix and again in Tucson, where I've lived since early 80's. There is no other artist like Bob, living or gone. To say that he is a very unique artist is quite the understatement! The more tracks I listen to, the more appreciation I have for him and that he is still here with us.

This may have been mentioned further down the thread. But I like the fact that on this version he starts off in the third person but when he gets to the Topless Joint he switches to the first person - and stays there!. ( yeah I know - there a small bit of third person) but he obviously decides that the first person is so much more powerful.

I like this version but it doesn't replace the original with its sense of urgency, almost desperation that makes it one of Dylan's most moving songs and vulnerable in a way that is unusual for him. This version has a touch of pathos but it is more detached which is more typical for him.

this version is my favorite, too. It could be a demo, or could be the original recording from NYC. Bob had recorded basically the whole album, and took it home over the holidays to play for family and friends. legend has it his brother in law gave him some feedback that caused Bob to go in and re-record all the songs. That is why in these comments folks reference the Minneaoplis version (which is the one that got released) and the NYC version. Interestingly, before Bob came home for the holidays, he had already sent the album to press... and the first versions that came out were the original ones. Legend has it the next 'Bootleg' series will be these outtakes. I am incredibly excited for this, as I think of this album as a perfect masterpiece. To me, this album was the return to form for Bob. After Blonde on Blonde (and after the mythical motorcycle accident)... Bob went off in weird directions for the next 7 or 8 years. I am just drooling at the thought of 2 or 3 cds of outtakes and alternate versions. However, I have been reading that this era (1974-ish) is 'next' in the bootleg series for about 5 years now... and 3 different releases of the bootleg series have been released. Cut the 'Cutting Edge' set. It is is peak Dylan, where he was cranking out SO much work that songs of perfection like 'positively 4th street' was relegated to a bside, and kinda never officially released. He was so prolific during this era that he INVENTED the double album with 'Blonde on Blonde'. Yeah... he INVENTED it. I bet the record company shit itself trying to figure out how to manufacture and advertise and release a double album. sorry, got a bit off topic there.. but once I start thinking about Bob and Blood on the Tracks... so much emotion comes out. Any of you guitars players out there have any thoughts on the tuning here? I am guessing it is definitely not standard tuning.
@rshefchik
@rshefchik 3 жыл бұрын
Open E. All the songs from BOTT were originally written in this tuning - even "Idiot Wind." The five New York tracks that made the final pressing are in open E, but the five Minneapolis recordings were rearranged. The released version of "Tangled Up in Blue" is in G, standard turning.

It's laughable that people who don't like Dylan feel compelled to listen, and then comment. More laughable is the 'he can't sing' comments. Who listens to singer that they believe can't sing? Dimwits? Simpletons? In some cases, probably. But I think it's worse than that. I think it's more like the person who looks at a Matisse, a Modigliani, a Keith Haring or a Banksy and just doesn't get it. He knows it's a masterpiece, and he's a bit pissed they he just doesn't have that 'whatever it is' to appreciate art. So he lashes out and trashes it. Isn't it better just to listen to Hannah Montana and look at pictures of sailboats in the bay? You'd probably be happier.

The version of the song itself is great but I understand why he went with a text that contained more surprising juxtapositions and greater variation. Also, the noise from presumably the guitar is distracting and the guitar is out of tune. And you know, even if he liked this version, as soon as they went for another take he would have changed the lyrics a little again. I can appreciate this version's uniqueness. Thanks for posting!

Guitar doesn't sound out of tune to me but the style of open notes & what sounds like 'blues' added 9ths/7ths plus 'hammer-ons' & 'pull-offs' is not a pure chord sound - actually a stunning strumming sound!

I love this but you ruined it by starting with that stupid 'I can't sing' pic

Haha you're probably right. Was trying and failing at being funny. If I could change it now I would.

+Rickduden +Metropolis Noir -- I'd say 'I Can't Sing' is very apt. Not because he can't sing, cuz he obviously can and does possess one of the most iconic and unique voices in the world. Singing 'pretty' can't be the point, right?

That's because he's been ridiculed for his singing voice being unconventional.

i dunno, this is one of my favorite songs, but not one of my favorite versions of it. i like the album version and the one on Real Live better

This is a good version, but I think both the BOTT album version and the Real Live version are superior. The Real Live version has those incredible lyrics changes that take the song to another level, and the original album version is probably the most pleasing to the ear. This version has that quiet, intimate quality that all the NY BOTT tracks have, and I don't know if that's necessarily best for Tangled Up in Blue. Still a great recording, though.
