Johnny Cash helped Dylan out in his early days. Both recorded for CBS. In the early 60's CBS was about to drop Dylan from the label and Cash who was long established told them that if they drop Dylan he would leave the the label because he didn't want to be associated with a label that couldn't see that Dylan was headed for greatness.

Dylan first recorded this in 1963. It was on his album The Free Wheelin' Bob Dylan." The version you reacted to here with Johnny Cash was recorded in 1968. It's on Dylan's "Nashville Skyline." To me, Dylan was still, for the most part a Folk Singer during this period. If I recall, "Lay Lady Lay" was Dylan's Big Hit in the latter 60's. 1969. It was also on his album "Nashville Skyline. Brings back memories. Can't believe it was so long ago. But still worth listening to.

Yeah, Bob's voice was different on this album but I'd say he actually started changing it on his previous album, "John Wesley Harding". It's interesting that these two each have such a strong style of singing that they don't exactly mesh to a harmony like say, Simon and Garfunkel. But for Dylan and Cash fans this is great to listen to. Good reaction.

Dylan changed his voice up for Lay Lady Lay and the Nashville Skyline album, which brought him into more country type material. This was in 1969. During Dylan's "country" period. Actually it's more of an Americana period. He had a bad motorcycle accident in 1966 and holed up in Woodstock, NY with The Band. They essentially jammed for months on end (Basement Tapes came out officially years later after it was initially bootlegged). The Band and Dylan traded their knowledge of folk, blues, r&b, and country music. Until the early '70s, Dylan mined this segment of American musical genres. In fact, he appeared on Johnny Cash's TV show with a short haircut and a dark suit, presenting as a hip Merle Haggard or George Jones. There's some clips on KZbin of him singing "I Threw It All Away" on that show. Sound quality is not good though. He looks -- dare I say it -- angelic. Cash's core audience probably had no idea about Dylan's previous persona as an iconoclastic folk-rock poet who embodied everything they despised.

This is a Dylan track that he derived from the old folk song Scarborough Fair. The original version is on his early Freewheeling album. Dylan does do melodic. He doesn't always grunt his way through. About 1972 a mate of mine gave me a cassette tape of Dylan that he'd taken off some of his records. There were about three on it with Dylan and Cash duetting, so they must have done a session or two together. They blend in an interesting way. Different styles which sort of hang together. At this time Dylan was dabbling in country music which was Johnny Cash's forte. Have an explore, see what else is out there, you can play more early Dylan anytime you like.

This song borrows from the traditional English ballad Scarborough Fair. That folk song is credited with being several hundred years old. Though I’m sure it was adapted quite a bit over time and what we know of Scarborough Fair must sound quite different from how it did originally. I would recommend listening to Simon and Garfunkel‘s version of Scarborough Fair to hear the similarity to Girl From the North Country. Supposedly, Dylan wrote this song after his first trip to England in 1962. I do like this version with Johnny Cash. But I also like everything off of this particular album of Dylan’s Nashville Skyline. It definitely has a unique sound and mood among all of his albums.

At this time Dylan had not really established a musical identity and still had some thoughts of being the "new Elvis", as evidenced on the "Nashville Skyline" album. His vocals were smooth and creamy. Bob Dylan wrote "Girl From The North Country" and when Cash hear it he fell in love with it. At the same time Cash had "The Johnny Cash Show" on national television and invited Dylan to perform live on his show. Dylan did. The live version of the song is almost the same as the studio version that they recorded together. It was a formative time in Dylan's career; Cash was well established. The remained close friends (as close as anyone gets to Dylan) until Johnny Cash's death. Two music icons together.... It doesn't get much better!
