I would have recommended the studio version first, which is stunning and a classic. This one is more of a time capsule showing some of Dylan’s English “fans” turning against him for going electric, and him snarling back at them in disgust for not letting him follow his vision. The anger on both sides is palpable. He was more shouting than singing, and was also completely burned out from the pressure, the hectic touring and recording pace, the constant battles against the audience, very little sleep, and a burgeoning amphetamine habit along with who knows what other chemicals. After this tour he retreated to family life in Woodstock and didn’t go on the road again for years. He started touring again in earnest in the mid-70’s and hasn’t stopped since.

@@landenchantment yeah it’s weird with Dylan reaction vids. I’ve seen many with the real studio versions that seem to get through the censors, and others with awful cover versions of unknowns trying to sound exactly like Bob. I don’t know how some get posted and others don’t. And no, you’re not the only one who likes Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream! 🎸💥

This song is supposedly about a journalist who pulled him aside during his first electric concert in July 1965 (which you reacted to) to talk about folk harmonica playing, which Dylan had rendered old fashioned. He's imagining different scenarios where the tables are turned on that guy and he's revealed to be lame despite his supposed hipness ("you're very well read, it's well known"). All of the various freaks call him a freak (the sword swallower makes him swallow a sword...). The tune and arrangement are based on the Animals' version of Ray Charles's "I Believe to My Soul").

The geek is a childhood reference to traveling carnivals. A geek chased around live chickens at Freak Shows & rumor has it they'd kill & eat chicken parts then 'hand you a bone'. Wish I could remember which live concert Bob explains this at the intro to this song. That was back when he actually spoke to the audience. PS: For an interesting press conference "Dylan 65 San Francisco Press Conference" Oh, also "Rome Press Conference" to promote Love & Theft. Sometimes cool to hear him just talk. Peace & Blessings Thanks for reacting to unusual, not "Top 40" hits.

Bob Dylan’s reach is so massive. I liked the song All Along the Watchtower by Jimi then I realized Dylan wrote it. Knockin on Heavens door by GnR, realized Dylan wrote it, Wagon Wheel (very successful country song) by Darius Rucker, realized Dylan wrote it. Best songwriter ever. He also gave the Beatles weed and told them they are just being a boy band, inspiring them to write deeper songs too.

I like this song. I think it had something to do with his relation to the press and their understanding of his music (at the time) but maybe not. It's interesting cause the song is in the second person because of the word "you" like we are being talked to and the listener is Mr. Jones. There's another verse to the song which is not in this video that goes: "Well, the sword swallower, he comes up to you and then he kneels He crosses himself and then he clicks his high heels And without further notice, he asks you how it feels And he says, "Here is your throat back, thanks for the loan" And you know something is happening but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones?" You can hear all of the verses on the album version from "Highway 61 revisited" which is a faster version too.

The "traditional" story about the Newport incident is false mythology. He was the STAR that evening -- but was limited to fifteen minutes. Pete Seeger, on the board of the Festival, was increasingly pissed because Dylan was abandoning his "finger pointin' songs" for the more personal. And, of course, Seeger had outsized political influence. If you hear about "cutting the cables," that was Seeger's threat, but apparently Dylan manager Grossman intervened and they ended up in a wrestling match on the ground. See the interview in the video "No Direction Home". And look closely at the Newport videos: Dylan was shook by the booing, and it appears he's crying during the acoustic performance.

There's a Documentary on that 1960's British Tour [*] - called "Don't Look Back" - and another for the 1970's U.S. Rolling Thunder Tour - called "Renaldo and Clara" (nearly impossible to find). Martin Scorcese also did an incredible Doc on Dylan in 2005 called "No Direction Home" [*] it was on that UK Tour that Dylan turned the Beatles on to their first joint - which led to more drug experimentation - that spurred their transition from 'bubble gum' rock songs like "Love Me Do' - "Eight Days A Week" -etc. to songs like "Come Together", "I am the Walrus", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" -etc ...

In addition to their own music, the Grateful Dead was a great "cover" band. Every time they played The Balled Of A Thin Man, with Bassist Phil Lesh providing the vocals, they proved it. Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead did a tour together in 1989, and they did several versions of this song together. More than worth a listen.

When Dylan went electric, many of his folk fans booed him at his concerts, especially on this tour in 1966. There's lots of footage of people giving their opinions like what you see here, mostly negative. It created a huge cultural divide. There's a video of one dude who was like "out came this incredibly corny pop group" and someone replied "pop group? Ain't no pop groups like that". The booing trend started with the July 1965 Newport Folk Festival show you reacted to (Maggie's Farm), but it seems they were only boing him because it was just far too loud that day and because Dylan only played 3 songs.

"The Paul Butterfield Blues Band" played an hour set that day -- electric guitars -- and no one booed. That was the band backing Dylan when he was booed. It wasn't the volume -- unless he couldn't be heard; it was that he was "violating" the "purity" of his history as a political/civil rights songwriter that the far-Left of the folkie scene couldn't deal with. They booed -- one of the worst offenders was Pete Seeger -- becaue they believed they "owned" him. Seeger had already been complaining because Dylan was turning to more personal songs. He busted their chains and moved on.

Dylan actually has a wicked sense of humor. But very sly -- he could pull your leg clean off and you'd not notice. Even in the love triangle-murder song "Delia" he slips in some humor. The killer, charged with murder, asks the judge -- "What might be my fine?" The judge says -- "Poor boy, you get ninety-nine."
