Lyrics:
You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You might be a rock 'n' roll addict prancing on the stage
You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage
You may be a business man or some high-degree thief
They may call you doctor or they may call you chief
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk
You may be the head of some big TV network
You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame
You may be living in another country under another name
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a construction worker working on a home
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome
You might own guns and you might even own tanks
You might be somebody's landlord, you might even own banks
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride
You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side
You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair
You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread
You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may call me Terry, you may call me Timmy
You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy
You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray
You may call me anything but no matter what you say
Still, you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody

One of my favorite sayings all my life was you can’t be in good with God and the Devil you gotta choose! A young friend of mine at work said to me “ Bob Dylan wrote a song about that, so that’s how I discovered this beautiful song. I have the record and I listen to it in my car. I’ve always thought that music is the best way that God has to communicate with us.

Purple Sage Blessings that’s awesome to hear. At that time my experience with local churches & Christian book shops in terms of Bob Dylan’s 3 gospel/Christian albums was disappointing. They didn’t & wouldn’t stock these albums & fellow believers were critical of & judgemental about his testimony & his confession of faith. Additionally, many of his fans were enraged at the same time. Interesting to note that Jesus had the both the establishment & the worldly against Him also. I’d say this is when we know that we’re dealing with a true & genuine work of God when these things come against it!

@@marianm7468 I've heard similar things and I've had my own suspicions about Bobby Zimmerman as well. One of my favorite sayings, " Even a broken clock is correct twice each day. " may be applicable here. Though he may be aligned with the fallen one, the overall wisdom in his poetry is present. " It may be the devil or it may be the LORD .... ya gotta serve somebody. " If his choice is indeed the adversary , his wisdom ends with the poetry, in my opinion. My service is to our Heavenly Father , the All Mighty Creator. Have a good evening and a Blessed tomorrow, Marian . Thanks for your insightful comment.

Was 16 when this came out and my older sister gave it to me on vinyl for that birthday . That combination of Knopfler and the organ with Dylan’s lyrics captivated me and was a catalyst in my journey which to this day , 32 years of marriage and four children later embraces serving Him. Dylan can never know how pivotal his art has been in my walk. I may not be forever young but I am forever grateful !

My first Bob Dylan album in 1987. I bought it because of "man gave names" and wasn't sure what I was going to find. Then I heard this and was hooked on the spot forever... What's most mesmerising about Dylan is this incredible energy he puts in his singing. Another element worth mentioning is that Dylan's writing is very accessible to non-native english speakers like I am (I'm french). There's always a couple of words in any song I can easily remember and relate to. It may sound quite obvious but it doesnt goes the same with Neil Young or Leonard Cohen... Dylan just reaches your soul like no other. He is my favourite artist of all time.

A classic example of the songwriting prowess of Bob Dylan. He is "The Poet", His given nickname, but for me its his lyrics that cut through the noise like a razor sharp double edged sword. His understanding of songwriting goes way beyond the higher levels of the craft. He understands the human condition so well, his words are like missiles aimed right at the heart of it. Definitely a must listen for anyone interested in the craft of songwriting. Cheers...!

Where precisely is Jesus in this song? If Dylan wanted to praise Jesus he would have mentioned his name. He didn't. Its a great song and one of his best please don't demean the poet that wrote it. The words are quite CLEAR. Dylan mentions The Lord and the Devil and Timmy, Bobby, Zimmy, R.J. and Ray. Never mentioned Jesus once. . . and why would he?
