I bought this album when it came out, and played it to death. The unreleased songs were fantastic and worth the album by their selves. Masterpiece is my favorite .

It’s a shame he didn’t do an album with Leon Russell at that point. “River Flow” has a great sound.

It's absolutely worth seeking out the 4 tracks Bob played live at a new years concert with the Band at the Academy of Music, at the end of '71.

Hi, John. Great video as always. Watching the River Flow and When I Paint My Masterpiece are great on the Shadow Kingdom album from 2023. Also, it's nice that you put up your Tintin artwork, and with the original French titles, no less! Take care!

My very first exposure to Bob Dylan was his "Greatest Hits, Vol. 2." My parents joined a record club, and this was one of the albums they chose. I was only 10 at the time (fall, 1973), and I mostly thought he sounded weird, because I kept hearing "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again," the words of which I couldn't figure out. Later, when I was a teenager, I bought several Dylan albums of my own, and went back to listen to the Vol. 2 album, and I really liked (and still do) the 1971 recordings on Side 4, and "Watching the River Flow," which I consider something of a (at least minor) masterpiece. You didn't mention "Planet Waves," and album that Dylan recorded before "Blood on the Tracks," which is worth listening to. As always, I enjoyed hearing your thoughtful commentary, with which I mostly agree with. I'm glad that you make these videos.

The B-side of "Watching the River Flow" was the New Morning outtake "Spanish Is the Loving Tongue" (different from the Another Self-Portrait version). "Wallflower" was another one recorded in '71, at the "George Jackson" session.

The newly recorded tracks on GH II are absolutely amazing and worth the price of admission alone.

"When I paint my masterpiece" is one of my favourite Bob Dylan songs. I was surprised when he included in the 1991 set which I saw in Rome. I guess he included it because it starts with a description of Rome. It also proved to be prophetic for me personally, since the song speaks of travelling from Rome to Brussels. I learnt that my job would move from Rome to Brussels two weeks after seeing the concert! So far as I am aware, Bob had the same band for the studio versions of "Masterpiece" and "Watching the River". It' s a pity that Bob didn't tour with that line up, nor use that line up during the Concert For Bangladesh (as they were all on stage - Carl Radle plays bass on Leon Russell's set). I think that George and Bob had rehearsed "If Not For You" but not "Love Minus Zero No Limit". So George looks surprised and seems to shuffle towards the back of the stage while he changes his guitar part from "If Not For You" to "Love Minus Zero....". It's no surprise that it was not repeated in the evening. In terms of photos, Eric Clapton also released a compilation album during this period. It was called "History". The cover artwork features Eric Clapton from "The Concert For Bangladesh".

i never knew dylan chose the songs for volume 2. he should be considered a genius for that alone. nice videos on you tube of people assembling a 1971 full album release by bob.

i recently rewatched "concert for bangladesh" in it's entirety and while i agree with you about dylan being the highlight, harrison was thoroughly enjoyable. billy preston was someone i unwisely had paid no attention to and seeing pete ham play with george was touching. are you going to see dylan this fall in your neck of the woods, john?

Nice video John! The Greatest Hits Vol. II was my second Dylan record after Greatest Hits. Both CDs bought in the mid-90s. Now I have 46 different releases, mostly vinyl. And Bob is my most played artist on Spotify year after year. But I did not know that the cover photo was from the Bangladesh concert. So thanks for that piece of information. 😊

Hi, great video! I have that covers compilation on double vinyl. It's a wonderful listen, one of my favourite records in my collection. I can't remember where I bought it though, and I didn't even know it was released on CD! During that period Columbia also put out the 'Dylan' album (without Bob's permission), which is a pretty poor set of covers, although I don't mind Spanish Is The Living Tongue. I have it on vinyl too as it did not get a CD release until I believe, the complete album collection box set. I also have the Masterpieces collection on triple vinyl. That's really worth checking out as each side is themed, with one side being non album tracks, including Rita May! A friend of mine had a CD copy of that, but I'm not sure where he got it as I've never seen it in a shop. Maybe a collection that's a worthy subject for another video? Anyways, thanks, I always enjoy the videos and hearing your take on things as a life long fan. Stuart

@johnheaton5667 .... John, excellent and very informative! As I really enjoy Dylan as well. I'd like to request if you could do an indepth program on Dylan's bootleg series, and which 10 or so are the best in your opinion. Thanks John.
