May 1967, I had just returned from a year in Vietnam, I was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Washington DC, had 6 months left to serve. A soldier in our barracks had this album. He let me borrow it to take to the Post library so I could listen in a special soundproof room. I was blown away, bought my own copy and spent many nights just listening in amazement at this great album. I wore it out. It is still the best album ever made.

The thing I admire about Dylan is that if you've lived one of his songs it punches you right in the gut lyrically, then soothes you with the music and arrangements. This song is one of those for me. Dylan in this era was nothing short of a genius.

That piano part, probably one of the best rock 'n' roll piano performances of the 60s, was by Paul Griffin. He was also responsible for the exceptional piano on Steely Dan's Sign in Stranger. Griffin, like many session -players, never got the attention he deserved, but we're lucky to still have the records.

I feel like this is the part of the album where it really kicks in. After the long and amazing visions of Johanna, which is one of Dylan’s best songs but takes a while to appreciate completely, it strikes as one of the catchiest and most passionate songs in the album upon first listen. This album is the best “popular music” piece ever made by far and it works as the platonic idea of a amazing album experience even stronger than Pink Floyd’s or The Beatles’ albums by a long shot in my opinion (even though both of them are amazing to).

@@geoffoconnor3487 I don’t know if that’s true. I think s/he is likening the album to Plato’s Forms, ie, as close to pure or perfect as something could be, which I think is an interesting idea and I want to hear more on that.

My wee Da got me in to Dylan by way of Lester Flatts & Earl Sgruggs. I was born in 1961 & when I eventually realised ( after my wee Da kept trying too make me understand tha Dylan was the writer of the songs ) what I was listening too, I was hooked. It's now 2023 & I cant go 1 day without listening to Dylan. The man is a musical genius, simple as that. God bless Bob Dylan, he's never written a bad song. HAIL HAIL Glasgow Celtic. Bob Dylan did give up writing folk protest songs and being a folk singer when he went electric the history cannot be disputed. Also, he did not evolve, he went back to what he started out as, a Rhythm & Blues music artist. Before Dylan was a folk singer he was playing in Rock 'n' Roll bands.

@@manticore2580 If you can say "he didn't evolve" with a straight face I don't understand at all. Many folkies had R&B influences including the Beatles, and Dylan actually reinvented himself after Newport when he introduced "folk rock" - it didn't go over well with everyone but die-hard fans like us know it's all in the evolution of an artist's work. Every "change" he experimented with was pure Dylan and completely unpredictable, I'd say. However, he never "gave up" those early protest tunes, he just spoke in a different genre of sound, and truly, he is a master at changing his style. Never gets stale.
