Ballad in Plain D is a masterpiece. It perfectly captures AND skewers the nearly universal experience of being a broken hearted sad sack self righteous idiot of a young man. A million emo songs 40 years later would try to do the same thing, but without any of the poetry, drama and self critique you find here. This song is hated only because it shows us such a clear and unflattering picture of our hero and ourselves at our worst.

completely disagree but i gotta respect the ability to reclaim such a reviled song 👍

Completely agree with this take. Never understood the campaign against it.

@@Anthony-hu3rjthere’s campaign against the song ballad in plain d because it’s the definition of the word “filler”. I’m convinced. Now what can I do to help?

One of my top 5 Dylan songs. My favorite Dylan album. The variety on this album from humor to poignancy to anger to inquisitive is unmatched in his catalog. This song is an incredible insight into some of our uglier feelings which makes it no less valuable or impactful.

i never did listen to the song's text, it has been just a sort of (likeable) soundscape to me, in an album that i like as a whole, but re-listening to it and caring about the words: it is great, intense, inconvenient of course ... in other words: it is art. who cares about justice when love is ending.

Another Side would easily be my favorite pre-1965 Dylan album, and in particular I think Side B would stack up against most of the sides in his entire body of work (I'm a huge Motorpsycho Nitemare fan) but then it runs into this enormous brick wall, a slog so long even It Ain't Me Babe can't entirely redeem it; a real shame.

such a bummer on an otherwise-delightful little record

I believe people were just hypnotised into berating this song because Dylan, himself, expressed regrets about writing it and then all the critics and biographers followed suit. The song is bitter and ugly and petty and that's the point. It captures the emotions of an early failed relationship with searing accuracy in my opinion. We're not getting both sides. We're just getting raw emotion.

I always found this song so incredibly boring. I love Another Side and have listened to it countless times, but I still can't recall almost anything about this song. An unispired chord progression, indiscernible melody, something about his lover's sister...? And it's not helped by its unfortunate placing: "I Don't Believe You" would be a perfect climax to the album before "It Ain't Me, Babe", but then we get this 8 minute sludge. I always forget about this song when I put the album on and it kills the flow on what's mostly a fun and light hearted affair.

Are you just going to talk and cite the lyric to us? Why don't you play the track and let the poet/artiste deliver his work? Your opinion holds no weight otherwise.
