Chorus:
They sat together in the park
As the evening sky grew dark
She looked at him and he felt a spark
Tingle to his bones
'Twas then he felt alone
And wished that he'd gone straight
And watched out for a simple twist of fate

I had never really listened to Bob Dylan until this week. I`m from Argentina, here he`s well known and everything, but... I had never paid attention to him. So I started to. Today I met this song in the Scorse`s movie. It touched me deeply and I started to cry. Now it can be said that I love Dylan.

Other singers make music, and the best give birth to new music. But music made Bob Dylan, and he was born into music. The difference between Bob Dylan and other singers, no matter how good the others can be, even Ray Charles, even Van Morrison, even Joe Cocker or Pavarotti, is akin to the difference that exists between pure light and its reflection, between a solid object and its shadow, between the finest feast and its verbal description, between experiencing something and hearing someone else talking about it. Dylan's singing is music itself, not just some type of music, or what music ought to be, but what music really is. Other singers can be stronger and more technically skillful or appeal more to the masses by singing in the way the masses think singing ought to be done, but Dylan's singing has no bearings with schools, neither with preconception nor prejudices. His singing changes music by being music because his singing is what music is, what music keeps being and becoming by existing as music. Bob Dylan has to be a god disguised as a singer, and it is no wonder at all that most fools disregard him as a singer. No wonder, as fools are immune to wonder.

They sat together in the park As the evening sky got dark She looked at him and he felt a spark Tingled to his bones 'Twas then he felt alone And wished that he'd gone straight And watched out for a simple twist of fate They walked along by the old canal A little confused, I remember well And stopped into a strange hotel With a neon burnin' bright He felt the heat of the night Hit him like a freight train Moving with a simple twist of fate A saxophone someplace softly played As she was walkin' on by the arcade She heard the melody rise and fade The sun was rising up She dropped a coin into the cup Of a blind man at the gate And forgot about a simple twist of fate He woke up, she was gone He didn't see nothing but the dawn He Got out of bed and put his clothes back on Pushed back the blinds Found a note she left behind To which he just could not relate All about a simple twist of fate He hears the ticking of the clocks And walks alone through the city blocs Hunts her down by the waterfront docks Where the sailors all toll in Maybe he’ll spot her once again How long must he wait? One more time, for a simple twist of fate People tell me it's a crime To know to much for too long a time She should have caught me in my prime She would have stayed with me Instead of going off to save And leaving me too many takes Upon that simple twist of fate Songwriters: Bob Dylan Simple Twist Of Fate lyrics © Audiam, Inc

There is a scene in the new Rolling Thunder Revue documentary where he's playing this at a faster tempo to a older group of board game enthusiasts. He is hunched behind the chordophones on the right side of the stage playing with a fury, I've been without for so long. It is as good as it will ever be in that moment. It may be a lot to ask, me being a stranger to you, however there is one here that knows where this crooked little piece of American history is in its entirety.

It just dawned on me that this has a different last verse. On Blood on the Tracks, Dylan sings, "People tell me it's a sin /To know and feel too much within / I still believe she was my twin, but I lost the ring / She was born in spring, but I was born too late / Blame it on a simple twist of fate." Those lyrics are far more oblique and open-ended. Dylan's last verse here ostensibly explains the last verse and even the song -- about aging, lost love, and how time can make love ill-fated. Both verses are brilliant, but I think I prefer the turn of the line "She was born in the spring, but I was born too late" too much.
