As a secular deadhead I fully agree. Its because it talks about "jesus" oh no, what will ppl do?!? Just like Islam and Hinduism, Judaism. Christianity can also inspire amazing music.

In 1979 at age 20, my girlfriend's mom gave me this record. She was a true Christian. At 1st I kind of scoffed. After playing it and reviewing the lyrics I found so much TRUTH I continue to listen to it today. No, I didn't become a born again Christian...but I do have faith in the Lord!

if you have faith which means you believe, then your feet follow what you say, you count and bank on that belief. If you follow then the Lord, you are a Christian. In his day, they called them, "little Christs" those who repented what they once knew, changed, and put their faith, hope, and life hidden in Him, dying to self. I pray salvation comes to yoru whole house. I was 21, then, like you could not believe straight up Dylan became a Christian. Made sense after listening, he came from a devout Jewish home had the upbringing. Torah/Bible, Jew- Gentile grafted in to the promise to Abraham and the children of Israel.

Today is the day of your salvation my friend. Don’t put it off. You may live to regret it! Seek the Lord while He may be found. Read Romans c10 v 9-10. God loves you so much He sent Jesus to die for you. Who else would do that for you? He’s taken your sin and shed His blood to wash you clean. Believe it, repent, give it all to Him and ask Him into your life NOW! Thank Him.

This might be the best recording of this song. Band is tight. Guitar work is outstanding. And he sings the tongue-twisting lyrics with emotion and perfect rhythmic phrasing.

The only people who didn’t like it were the music critics and Bob’s liberal contemporaries who didn’t like his reference to sheiks with nose rings” profiting from the USA oil crisis at the time. Of course, Dylan is impervious from criticism from any direction, left, right, up, or down. Truly his own man.

A few people in the comments have misidentified the guitar player as Mark Knopfler on this date. You can tell its not him, the player is a flat picker not a finger style player. I looked up the touring band on Wikipedia, here it is: The tour lineup for the first leg of the tour consisted of Bob Dylan (guitar, piano, harmonica, vocals), Spooner Oldham (keyboards, vocals), Terry Young (keyboards, vocals), Fred Tackett (guitar), Tim Drummond (bass), Jim Keltner (drums), Regina Havis (vocals), Helena Springs (vocals), and Mona Lisa Young (vocals).[

Bob Dylan has a prophetic voice. Slow train, when you gonna wake up, gotta serve somebody, when he returns etc. are still current and apply to today. +Brandon - I don't think any segment of Dylan's audience was more accepting of his embrace of Christianity than the west-coast contingent (he got a LOT of guff about it in some quarters) - spiritual seeking was and is a significant aspect of the west coast ethos, and seekers of every kind mingle with tolerance and respect. I'm not any kind of conventional Christian, for example, but I didn't have even a little problem with it. The songs of that moment in time being great was just a bonus...

@@poetry7260 I've always (for the last 50 years, anyway) been of the impression that one of the many reasons Bob Dylan is a one-of-a-kind, GREAT song writer (& obviously poet) is that he is aware of artistic license AND USES IT! There still is a Slow Train Coming. This song was written about the Second Coming of Christ. This , in our opinion, is some of the best material Dylan ever wrote. Spiritually poignant, musically excellent, and culturally relevant. The prophetic insight Dylan was given still speaks to us today in an ever clearer admonition to "change our way of thinking" that is, repent and believe the Gospel because "You Gotta Serve Somebody" it might be the Devil or it might be the Lord because there is a Slow Train Coming !

One of the endearing things to me at least is he never does his own songs the same way twice from what I’ve seen . At the time I loved him - but not this ‘born again Bob’ album, coming off the heels of desire and rolling thunder etc… I thought he really didn’t try to sing anymore - that was only his talky style like a white rapper. I think I was like 19 when I saw him in Madison on this tour - he was always so far ahead of the masses - had no idea and couldn’t see 45 years ago the groove and beauty of this album. Did not know til today that this album was recorded produced by jerry Wexler with Marc knofflee and pick withers. In another video and channel wexler says ‘ it was Bob Dylan. If he said jump I would say how high’ we don’t have people-and haven’t had in the industry those folks for at least 50 years, producers and execs that love the music more than the bottom line.
