Every time I think I knew almost all Bob Dylan"s work, he surpises me again with great and fantastic new songs. It's a long, long road til I get there, isn't it? This one is absolutely gorgeous! Thanks so much.

Does anyone know if this song is inspired by the movie "The best years of our lives" (1946) in which a war veteran named Homer who lost his hands wasn't able to open a door?
@nealpomea2836 Жыл бұрын
Doubt it There was a jump blues song with the title Open the Door Homer.
@da1215 Жыл бұрын
@@nealpomea2836 Do you mean the song from 1947? But this was called open the door richard. Dylan said that he changed the name from richard to homer, because there were already two Richard's during the recordings (Manuel and Danko)... but perhaps he changed to Homer because of the movie...
@nealpomea2836 Жыл бұрын
@@da1215 True but I don't see any connection with Best Years. Maybe he meant the character Homer in Lillie's of the field, or even the Greek story teller. Ha!

the chorus was taken from a number one hit by count basie, open the door, richard. that song was based on a 1919 vaudeville skit by john mason. it´s a nonsense song. and homer was a nick name from the novelist and musician and friend of bob dylan richard farina. richard farina died in a motorcycle crash 1966.

WHY does he sing "Open The Door RICHARD when the song is entitled "Open The Door HOMER?" A mystery that's always puzzled me.
@paulluchter1372 жыл бұрын
There was an older song named Open the Door, Richard (Louis Jordan, Count Basie, etc.) Fairport Convention did this as Open the Door, Richard, the Dylan tune, anyway...

@@steverhodesvideos6244 This is strange and intriguing for me too. Dylan could have named it simply "Open the Door" if he wanted to dodge claims of plagiarism, so why choose the name of the writer of the Odyssey? Nothing wrong with asking questions.
