The shock on Bob Hope's face after the first few jokes bomb was something to behold. Overall, a stinker of a monologue. And by this point Hope himself had overstayed his welcome. When Johnny Carson retired from the Tonight Show someone asked him why he was leaving and he said it was because he didn't want to end up like Hope.

The good old days when we could have a laugh. I’m sure politics was just as tough then but it’s great to see these past Presidents having a laugh at themselves .

I didn't know that Sherwood Schwartz wrote for Hope. Schwartz created "Gilligan's Island" and "The Brady Bunch," among other shows.

I first saw Hope on television specials in the 1980s, past his prime. I have a hard time connecting with him in these clips because topical jokes are generally dispoable humor, but the man had style and charisma.

@@Ppepper92. That's fantastic! Bob Hope is a giant of American 20th-century entertainment. One of my favorite stand-up comedians is Norm MacDonald. Bob Hope is one of MacDonald's most admired comedians because of Hope's delivery.

A different time when people respected the President and Presidents didn't mind being joked about.

Carson apparently loathed him the most, of any guest.

I just don't think Bob Hope was funny. A comedian who is not funny is pretty pathetic.

You've just got no sense of humour. Perhaps you'd find Russell Brand more to your taste. That's someone who is so unfunny he has to be loud and obnoxious to make up for it. Hope is subtle, so there are some who just won't get it. Whooooosh.
