Instead of producing a typical video essay, I'm choosing to go off script and offer my thoughts on the recent ousting of Chapek and the shocking return of Bob Iger.

Your scripted video essays are some of the best on KZbin. I’d keep this channel dedicated to that format. If you look at someone like The Critical Drinker, his main channel is dedicated to his structured videos, but he has a second channel “Drinkers Chasers” with unscripted uploads mainly taken from livestream roundtable discussions. Just a thought.

As you’ve pointed out, many of the current issues now with the Disney company were because of Iger. I’m glad Chapek is out as he made things MUCH worse, but I’m not celebrating just yet with Iger back. He did obviously do some good things too so I’m open to see what he does. I hope he can get the company back on its feet. At least whatever he can do within two years. And choose a better successor…

Agreed. A new face is what they need that has a similar mentality to both Walt and the best of Micheal Eisner who stays apolitical with no to little degrees, and has the best knowledge of business decisions and strategies. That’s the type of CEO they need.

@gridley Oh honey. Identity politics is from the Right. It's only through the Rights politicisation of this issue that it becomes polical at all. All the Left wants to do (when it comes to this issue at least) is follow the science. It is the Right that is impeding these efforts. It is the Right that consistently legislates in ways in variance with actual facts. An individuals own identity wouldn't have to be considered by strangers if the right didn't see such private issues as appropriate for Parliamentary or Congressional representatives in the first place. It's only a matter because the Right _chooses_ for it to be one.

@@taffysaur Iger actually likes the parks and got his start 40-some years ago working there. So there’s a chance he may fix some of the damage. Chapek made no secret of the fact that he hated the parks, saw them as not worth investing in, and cheapened the experience with nickel and diming and the disastrous Genie+ (amplified the existing problems with FP+ and added a charge to something that used to be included in the ticket).

^ My thoughts exactly. He was a better than the Bobs and there were some best parts of him, but he was an overall business mess who also had his fair shares of bad decisions and strategies. As much I hate to be THAT guy, but Disneyland was his most notorious mistake of his career as a CEO cause most of French weren’t very open about it when he coulda focus on investing the domestic parks. If he went with that route, they would be in a better shape than they are now.

Disneyland Paris has exactly what you mention as better alternative for Genie+: an insanely expensive day pass called premier access that lets you skip the lines, which few people seem to buy and indeed the stand-by lines are now much better than they used to be compared to the old unpaid Fastpass days.

I honestly have more issues with Iger than Chapek. Here’s my reasons: 1. I think a lot of the issues Chapek dealt with were Iger’s fault, 2. I honestly can’t tell you what is Iger and what is Chapek; Disney takes forever on a single project so it’s quite possible that almost everything we saw was Iger but we attribute it to Chapek, 3. I personally think Disney has become bloated and was actually excited to see it deflate and maybe not spend a half a billion on a single ride or 250 million on a poorly made film (That’s my bias though based on what my former coworker has told me), and 4. Iger was just as bad with the cast members he just was better at hiding it; I like the bluntness of Chapek (the stores were all shut down under Iger and if I am recal the Iger regime pushed to no pay minimum wage in CA.) I honestly think they needed someone from the outside to come in, but that’s my bias. Maybe set up a Walt and Roy team. Idk.

I believe charging more for far less and sacrificing quality for major profits is definitely noticeable and insulting to Disney Loyalists. Especially when the majority of the Disney experience was once included with Park and Hotel prices, are now being charge big time! Along with rides constantly breaking down and parks and bathrooms are dirty and need repair. And this reservation system and Genie + is a nightmare to navigate! The Disney experience has been replaced with frustration and anxiety and major price gouging! It’s pretty bad when the kids don’t want to return to Disney and would rather go to the beach or camping etc. Disney definitely is in a downward spiral. I predict that within the next 3to5 years DISNEY won’t have to worry about over crowding any longer. Can’t keep expecting Steak and getting hamburger. Word is spreading fast even with the diehards. It’s just( not Walt’s Disney anymore )and so not worth the price gouging! And if they think they’re playing to the wealthy, the ones I know haven’t seen the value for years! BIG! BIG! MISTAKES

I find it pretty interesting to hear your thought process and it's definitely a good fit for being able to cover relevant topics before it's too late. Honestly if you were willing/had the time I'd love to see what would happen if you did a livestream someday- it'd be really interesting to hear your thoughts and see what discussion unfolds between you and the stream chat in real time, it could lead to some really interesting discussions. I don't think Iger's going to be able to do much in the parks especially while he's back, but I'm really relieved on behalf of the creatives at Disney. I've seen so many animators and Imagineers celebrating that somebody who genuinely seemed to care about getting to know them and support their efforts is back at the company, especially after seeing so many other stories circulating about how distant Chapek was from all of the creative teams. I'm hoping that with Iger working short term that he can at least begin to pull Disney out of the crisis the company's currently in, and that since he won't be here for many more years that he hopefully won't get the chance to make any more huge decisions that could prove to be harmful down the line. Really crossing my fingers that the next CEO will be more in touch with the company's audience and it's creatives.

I'm not sure what Iger can pull out of his pants that have previously been occupied by ants and on fire, but I definitely feel there is so private stuff going on that the public won't get to know till decades later, plus I don't think he should be training his replacement, reminds me of how Eisner was in the meetings for his replacement. But again it's hard to find a "Walt Disney" by going thru the trash. Iger can be blamed for a lot of debt through acquiring, he's got noone else to buy. Also last I heard Comcast was swinging big balls recently saying they might buy out Disney. Who knows, but get some popcorn in stock

The pricing and experience have gotten worse. I also have a hard time supporting their Disney+ content as of recent. I feel they are losing that balance of profits vs customer satisfaction. I remember booking/planning my first trip to Disney World, it was special as it had always been a big deal in my mind. Having magic express, food plan, magic bands, fast passes and such to go with it, it definitely was special. Once those perks got stripped, I feel like they really don’t care about the experience. I’m a big fan of this video format! When I heard the news I tagged you in a Twitter post I made because I was like “I CANT WAIT FOR A VIDEO ON THIS!! I want to be optimistic on this change, but truthfully I can’t until I see some actual steps in the right direction. And if I’m being honest, I actually think things are going to get worse before they ever get “better” what Iger has done/got the ball rolling with EPCOT, I just can’t. Thank you for the video! I look forward to updates as they happen. Also think a lot of this is a whole lot of smoke and mirrors and not much else, but I’ll be willing to change my thoughts if the time comes. Still hoping something happens good to Epcot and really hoping for a Tron date. But I’m even more Leary about going out there from here in California for EPCOT’s 40th. Was there for the 10th which was my very first Disney world trip, the 20th and the 30th, but it’s no longer my EPCOT, and not really wanting to make a trip out there before Epic is finished.

I believe the Disney Co. especially the domestic Disney theme parks has a long way to go if they want to rebuild the level of faith and optimism that the Disney name once held in regards to its guests, but this is a start. While I am happy to a certain degree to see Bob Chapek gone; but sadly it helped solidify the ""bald man bad" rhetoric I hear from many other Disney fan vloggers. But at this time I will not hold my breath for immediate improvements under Bob Iger. Unfortunately like you stated Bob Chapek inherited a lot of the current problems we most be all aware are a direct product of the returning Bob Iger such as the 71.3 billion debt from the acquisition of 21st Century Fox. I wonder if all the crappy stuff that was implemented will be reversed? Because the conspiracy theorist in me thinks Bob Iger stepped away before all the changes took place. Then Bob Chapek was put in to be blamed for it all and Bob Iger comes back to save the Disney Co. and, now everyone is happy. But again nothing goes back to the way it used to be. At any rate we will see.

Since you are one of the more thoughtfull channels on not just Disney, but themeparks in general, a video like this reflecting on a major change at the biggest company is great. One thing i miss in themeparks and for sure in entertainment at last is a visionary mind like Walt Disney (who with all his faults) saw some dinky carnival rides and imagined the future (with the help of earlier examples like Versailles / World Fairs/ Tivoli Gardens and back in those simpler days the Efteling). To go from all that to Disneyland, the Florida project and an EPCOT dream. Basically the current state of themeparks is still taking it's marching orders and template from the first Disneyland. One can see from various other Disney parks and the Disneyfication of Universal/ Efteling and others that Walt's ideas were very sound. At least the Oriental Land company and to a lesser degree Eisner took up the reigns and expanded or tried their own variations. Some were seriously flawed (like California Adventure and Disneyland Paris) but mostly to lack of budget, budget cutting and corporate greed. For the most part many improvements were made at parks to make em at least viable. The Epcot dream - frankly even scaled down - it was off to a good start even if on a much smaller scale than the dream itself. Ther would have been time to fix and improve. But uhm......what happened then. There's still nothing that couldn't be fixed, IF they wanted to. But that's a big IF at the moment. So i'm wondering who are the "possible" visionaries for themepark entertainment - people with vision and ambition. Certainly artist like Tony Baxter and Joe Rohde had visions that pointed to the next level of attractions. Animal Kingdom (as originally envisioned) could be hugely succesful. Disney sea IS hugely succesful. I weep most for the charmless EPCOT......Universe of Energy had tenfold more charm that what currently replaces it (and took decades to be built??). No new countries were ever added and hardly ever expanded. One huge disappointment in my view is the ever increasing ratio of souvenir shops/meet and greets/overpriced restaurants (with their own set of problems) / theming (some good Star Wars land)/Carsland some way below par (the French riviera hotel, the polynesian abomination to be built, any Avenger campus) versus the lack of great attractions. Some will fail, some will spectacularly fail.......but now it has to be a decade to build and ends up being a slightly upgraded Space Mountain, or Maelstrom. Doesn't Tron seem a spectacularly SHORT ride for...ahum 2hours waiting lines. Back in the days one could do an entire park, and if properly timed, 20 minutes for the top attraction at most and no stupid fastpass/genie systems which never will become "magical " at all. So visionaries........who????

These were some of the same thoughts/concerns I had when I got news of the announcement (while my family was AT Disney World no less) It was our first time using Genie+ and it definitely made things feel more stressful and rushed throughout the day. The idea of paying $200 extra for unlimited unscheduled fastpass is honestly more palatable now after having experienced that, even with recession rolling in. Love this format by the way. You always offer a well thought out perspective in your vids, so hearing ad lib your thought process is refreshing. Would love to see/hear more of these in between the longer scripted releases. Keep it up!

Enjoyed the video! I have to say for some of us former Disney loyalists, we are deciding to spend our travel dollars on non-theme park vacations. I've been to Disney World about 14 times, but not in the last 15 years. For people like me (and I know I’m not in the majority), Epcot was at least 80% of the reason for going and that experience really doesn't exists anymore. I don’t see any potential for Disney Executives giving us a true 21st Century version of what Epcot should be, so I'll put that part of my budget towards visiting the real Eifel Tower or going to a modern science museum.

My husband and I were trying to decide on our 2023 vacation (since we didn't do much over COVID) and after we run the numbers it is cheaper for us to spend 2 weeks in Italy and rent an entire house than it is to go to all the Disneyworld Parks (and stay on site + food + etc). I would LOVE to take him to Disney but from what I understand the experience is not what I had as a kid, and I would rather just remember it as when it was magical.

The real question is: Who _is_ confident in this move? The fact that they didn't have anyone else lined up yet still felt the need to act so desperately does _not_ seem to instill confidence. Like has been said here, this has major "Bring back JJ for Episode IX" vibes, and I don't think its controversial to point out what a train wreck that was. Things are not on a good trajectory for Disney, and that current downward trend began under the very man they've just brought back

@@PoseidonEntertainment What Wall Street wants is only rarely (and even then only coincidentally) in the best interests of the rest of humanity―their take on the sheer classism that has come to dominate the Disney Parks Experience™ isn't one I'm likely to share. Leave it to them to love a reactionary move to a supposedly superior past, though

Definitely with you on the skepticism. On Genie+, the problem is that it is clearly meant to create a pain point for consumers by exploding standby queues and, beyond that, there is no guarantee you end up with anything. You are essentially paying for an IRL loot box. The need to either go back to the old system, or just do the pay to skip the line everyone else does. They’ve essentially created the worst of both worlds.

yes, it's obvious that Genie+ is just implemented for Disney's benefit and not you as the consumer - which is no way to earn trust from the consumers.
