Quite simply put, has Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom reached its shelf life? Should it be demolished and replaced?

Nostalgia will always take precedent in my book. A new Space Mountain might be more "thrilling" or "enjoyable" but ...I don't go to Disney to be thrilled. There's plenty of coaster parks for that. I go there to remember experiences, and days when things were simpler, brighter, and full of wonder for tomorrow.

I've gotten the distinct feeling as of late that just suggesting that nostalgia is why something should be there is the surest way to get Disney brass to decide to remove it. There's been a real anti-nostalgia, nostalgia-is-the-enemy-of-progress mentality about the creative world, and that lack of attention or care to the past and the reasons people actually feel a connection to it is, I feel, destroying properties left and right these days. One of these days, they'll realize that it's just not true to say nostalgia and progress are enemies, and hopefully that's before everything people love is gone. But with Disney, they keep making changes, and attendance keeps skyrocketing, so I have a bad feeling about it where it ends up.
@YouConquer

If nostalgia is what takes precedence then Dis doesn't fit that much anyone. Insanely long lines, a clearly unhappy staff in general, cheaply refurbished rides, not providing a viable Fast pass, constantly having to look at your iPhone to get on rides, cheap merchandise everywhere at incredible prices with boring, outdated cheaply done rides new and old is what it is now. It won't change until more people stop spending their money and going. Which they were down 17% in park attendance this yr. as proof many people have had enough. The Mouse and friends have clearly been topped/replaced by The Simpsons (Longest running show ever now) and Harry Potter. Compare just the villages and rides of those two to anything Disney offers today and at 1/3rd the cost with the ability to get a daily Express pass included in the price of your Hotel along with the fact that Disney's, "Food" is vile anywhere u go and it's easy to ignore Disney until they change back to what it once was built for. Everyone which is impossible with what they charge today. Our wallets firmly vote the Nostalgia of Universal now and look forward to another great park as long as they don't take the Disney route ever and even improve their own which is needed so it's not perfect.

Oh yeah for sure. If Disney were to redo the track, I'm absolutely confident that the ride wouldn't feel too much different. Despite having quite the different track layout, Disneyland's Space Mountain manages to emulate a lot of what Magic Kingdom is going for, but just in a more contemporary way.

I’m almost 6’ and always rode Space Mountain with my hands up the entire time and have never hit anything (the most painful part is not being able to brace for the drops and turns and banging my torso on the sides of the car). Despite that I’ve found that there’s been varying light levels every time I’ve been on it and any time there’s slightly more light than usual and the supports are just barely visible it definitely creates the illusion that the supports are lower than they actually are.
@Shi_gai
@Shi_gai 3 жыл бұрын
And I personally think if they do refresh the ride the best they could do is to redo only the track, ride effects and cars. Keep the same layout, queue, etc. since I feel like modernizing it would create a disconnect between the actual ride and exterior. But a smoother track, possibility for overlays and better cars while keeping the terrifying wild mouse design would add more longevity to the ride for at least a few more decades.

I recently went to Disney World and was very disappointed by the Florida version. It was just rough and seemed old. To be clear, I don’t have a bias toward my home Space Mountain. I was looking forward to a new version. So please refresh it but don’t make a copy of Disneyland. And never ever remove it. Side note: I did go the Magic Kingdom during a Halloween party and was confused by the lack stars. Thanks for the explanation. I can also backup the statement that the vanilla version of Disneyland’s is better than the themed ones. Not sure why though.

I'm one of those Disney World fans who grew up with the original rides (my parents took my brother and I there the first year it opened - we were quite young) and I love that 60's/70's vision of the future. Scrap the track if you have to, but those dioramas have to stay. They give everyone that wonderful sense of "future past", everything that goes around comes around (the influences of Syd Mead abound in modern automotive design... and let's not forget that the neighbouring Tron ride's vehicles are based on designs by Syd Mead), and it makes a great retro future concept for the theming of the ride.

Whether or not Space Mountain has reached the end of its shelf life, allow me to ask a more important question: Do you really want Space Mountain to be replaced at a time when Disney's CEO is an infamous penny-pincher and when the latest "thrill rides" added to the park are either "extremely low capacity rides relying heavily on very complicated tech" (Rise of the Resistance) or "poorly themed and watered down to the point of being more bland than Goofy's Barnstormer" (Seven Dwarfs' Mine Train)? In my opinion, the aging Space Mountain, even with all its faults, is still better than anything that modern Disney is capable of replacing it with.
@dopaminecoasters

I hope that Disney would not replace the Space Mountain track. The ride wouldn’t be as fun as it is without the bumpiness of the track, and re-doing the track comes with the risk of it becoming too tame and loosing all of its great airtime. I hope that space Mountain always stays as it is.

You accurately pointed out that Space Mountain is 1 of 3 of their top rides and our personal favorites. We were fortunate enough that when we went to DIS 3 yrs ago the last thing we did was ride it 5 X's in a row after receiving some additional fast passes by one of the few kind employees on another ride after repeated magic band issues. It was also the 1st ride we hit when the park opened for the day. Being able to ride it over and over again like that was a dream and something we probably wont be able to do ever again forever being 1 of the actual positive memories of being at the former, "Magic Kingdom". The kids and us just love it. My #1 ride both from a nostalgic and modern day point of view of being able to share it with our children. The jarring and roughness of the ride in the dark themed in a Space atmosphere is part of the reason we love it as it is. However, I see no reason that an upgrade would deter from that and we would enjoy it either way. Problem is that because the park as a whole is fairly boring today with a real lack of great rides, no ability to reasonably get off and back on the way we did without paying additional ride fees we will go to Universal instead every time by passing on the overpriced and cheaply done Disney parks altogether and being thrilled we do. That being said, Best thing about the Main park IS Space Mountain. I have doubt Tron (Which few have any connections to IMO) will be like other new Disney rides like Slinky Dog. Overhyped, insanely long lines, no viable Fast pass and incredibly overpriced stuffed with a merchandising store filled with cheaply, overpriced garbage no one wants or needs.

Personally I think they should keep the outside shell but design a new track. I feel like Space Mountain is beautifully nostalgic for many of us, but comes up short as the "thrill ride" it was back when it was created. Ive seen young children come off space mountain nowadays and be unimpressed (same with thunder mountain). I think keeping the same ideas while creating new more thrilling rides would be better than creating all new rides. That way the iconic imagery and theming is consistent but still up to date.

I agree that the standard for what is considered to be a thrilling ride is now far beyond what Magic Kingdom is offering. I appreciate Space and Big Thunder Mountain for what they are, but these coasters appear to be quite tame compared to something like Hagrid's. While I understand that it's a family oriented coaster, Hagrid's continues to raise the bar on what family audiences will find acceptable for thrill level. The drop tracks themselves really push the family category of coaster.

The sad truth is, it's still the most fun ride at Magic Kingdom until Tron opens. That park has neglected thrills for too long. If they replaced it with an update of the Paris version, or something in the Paris idiom, that would be smart. New restraints and everything else up to date. More of their parks need rides with appeal to teens and young adults. They should add on to the existing structure if possible, and do that. And definitely utilize the space for a better, single track.

I kind of disagree. I don't think that the Magic Kingdom needs to target that audience because Universal already does. Going to be honest with you, i am from the UK and have been on Space Mountain in WDW but the best Space Mountain or Hyperspace Mountain is at Disneyland Paris. Its a massive thrill ride from being shot out of a cannon to going into the dark with special effects while going up side down and corkscrew at an amazing speed with music in the seats along the way. Its a beautiful design as well from the outside and have seen some guys from America on KZbin saying that this is the best ride for Space Mountain around the Disney parks all over the world and also looks amazing at night at well.

It definitely has to be fully skinable so themes can be applied even between day ops and night parties. I first rode Space Mountain in prolly the late 70's. The older kids convinced us younger kids that people had already lost hands by holding their arms up. 40+ years later and I still sit scrunched down as far as possible in the seat.

Construction can be done at night... you know like the way Disney used to do all their construction so guests never heard a saw going off in Adventureland. But by doing one side at a time they can keep the ride operating. As for the Disneyland headrests with synchronized soundtrack? All I can say is Space Mountain Disneyland was struggling to be an "e" ticket ride. That update with headsets alone reinvented the ride. I haven't been on it since the new visual effects have been added but they look pretty amazing. I say WDW do the same.

It’s cool to imagine if they got rid of the dueling tracks in the ride and make it one could u imagine how long the ride duration/ time would be, plus the riders per hour could double the amount of Disneyland riders per hour or maybe they could throw in an inversion like Disneyland Paris’s Space Mountain, I am getting ahead of myself hopefully this ride is here to stay because Space Mountain is a wonderfully crafted experience you really can’t find or get anywhere else!!! I was so confused at the beginning of this video, I thought you were talking about the Disneyland version. I’ve never been to WDW, so I only know the Disneyland version, and it’s my favorite ride of all time. The last time I went to Disneyland was in November 2011 as a teenager, and since the park was fairly empty due to it being November, I rode it over and over and over again. It’s one of my favorite memories from my teenage years. However, now that I’m in my late twenties, I think back to the Matterhorn (because it’s the only thing I can compare the WDW Space Mountain to) and I remember feeling that it was a jarring, uncomfortable, ride even to my teenage body. If I went back as an adult, I don’t think I would opt to ride the Matterhorn more than once for this very reason. Therefore, I can understand your concerns about the WDW Space Mountain. I think it would be beneficial for the ride to get a track update while keeping everything else the same. What’s the point of a nostalgic ride if it hurts your body and only succeeds at reminding you that you aren’t as young as you once were?

The constant friction of the ride vehicles against the rails and support structure builds an incredible static charge. A charge that is looking for an easy escape. An easy escape that takes the form of me thinking, "We're not going that fast, and the ceiling's not that far...". Oops. The discharge was one of the most painful shocks I've ever received. Think sticking a fork in a toaster that's hooked up to a car battery. The loud pop and flash that accompanied my foolishness led the others in my ride vehicle to think something serious had broken. My whole arm, shoulder, and upper back were sore the rest of the day. I should mention that I wasn't some kid or teenager on his first ride on Space Mountain. I was a 6'4" adult riding for nearly the hundredth time. I should have known better. TL:DR No touchy. Big shock and bigger ouch!

Just a thought here, why not tear out the entire inner structure and make 1 combined roller coaster. The amount of space within WDW's space mountain is massive compared to the other parks. You can still use the dual loading, but have each section merge onto the lift hill. You keep the capacity by having Disneyland's trains, which is the 2x2's. What would you do with that space, now that 1/2 of the ride is removed? Well you could add other elements that could make space mountain an actual journey in space. How a bout a heartline roll, barrel roll, etc... that could be used to highlight moments in the ride like flying over a comet, avoiding another space ship etc... To me when it comes to the different Disney parks is having that standout attraction that the other parks do not have. Disneyland has Indiana Jones and the Matterhorn. But wouldn't be awesome to say "well Disneyland may have the Matterhorn, but our space mountain has an inversion in it."
