Screenwriters Terence Winter & Frank E Flowers join Mase & Sue to talk about BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE, which chronicles the rise of one of the most influential music artists of all time. We talk about how the message of his music impacted the world and continues to resonate today, the process of penning a biopic, the dynamic of writing partners, the intimate collaboration with Marley’s family, Bob and Rita’s complicated relationship, the authenticity of Kingsley Ben-Adir’s performance and the lack of subtitles. Plus, lessons in customer service, Steve’s grownup wardrobe and the films that made us movie fans.

I understand that 2 hours is a short period of time to deal with such a complex figure, but I really feel like their presentation of Bob Marley didn’t approach the musical, spiritual, and political depth that the real life man had. I thought the plot also dragged along at some points, and the flash back sequences didn’t really work, especially the whole thing about his father. They felt disjointed. The conflict/history with his manager was poorly explained and somewhat confusing. I think the heavy handed involvement of Ziggy (that little announcement from him at the start of the film, saying how he was on set nearly every day) led to an over-glorification of Marley, and barely touched on some of the more complicated aspects of his life (extramarital affairs, pan-Africanism). I did think they made good decisions in pushing the weed smoking aspect into the background, and examining how religious of a man Marley was. This is lost on many Americans. There aspects that I enjoyed the most included getting to hear his best songs on a huge movie theatre sound system, the portrayal of Rita (Lashana Lynch should see some nominations next awards cycle), and the choice to film the Jamaican scenes in Jamaica. Kingsley Ben-Adir did a nice job of recreating Marley’s performances. Overall I was entertained, but I wouldn’t put this is the annals of an artist’s history, like you can with other biopics.
