You can actually belong to both schemes. One is taxpayer funded by your employer while the other from being billed a monthly premium, that's if you haven't done so already, ring around the insurance companies operating in NZ - they are all Australian owned BTW, get quotes and compare those to the cost of ACC. It's a human failing that sometimes we don't know when we are well off. We so easily take for granted to benefits of living in New Zealand.

ACC LOST $400mil in the 2008 Stock Market Crash. They threw 5000 amputees off the weekly compensation payment system saying they were able to work 30hrs a week. Reapplying took 6 months (remember the 5000 emails sent to the wrong person)in which time the 5000 went on sickness or jobseekers benefits . The 400 million was made back but financially ruined 4-5000 cripples and their dependent families. Disgusting govt department.

ACC is funded from multiple sources, including business, petrol revenues and wages. Funds from each source are spent on injuries relevant to where they happened ACC makes investments in the financial markets that means the taxpayer is not lumbered with the entire bill. It's so important that this fellow, being interviewed by Sean on The Platform cast his mind back to a time before ACC was introduced when anybody injured let's say in a car wreck, often needed to sue the other party to the wreck to receive compensation. The New Zealand model was drawn largely from the Swedish scheme. Since then, ACC has included now many other injuries outside of those originally included, the scheme has also become something similar to Social Welfare, but more generous depending on the claimants ncome prior to the accident. Naturally, in most forms of government financial assistance there is abuse. Bullshit claims need to be sifted out by case managers so that only genuine claims are recognised. A time before the introduction of ACC is now almost impossible to imagine. Yet the gurmudedly naysayers loaded down with resentments still fail to grasp the important and nessesery function ACC has on the well being of all New Zealanders.
