It’s hard to even hear Bob Proberts voice because he was and still so loved and missed. I never forget his quote,” I’m actually a really nice guy” I mean you can hear how nice of a guy he was just by his tone and inflections. He’s super friendly and polite. When you’re in a hockey game it’s a job and competitive sport. I cried hard when he died. 😢only time I ever cried over a hockey player dying. Probert was just extra special. He never showboated. That’s super class and that just goes such a long way.

Great comment. I just left a similar one because even though he never played for my team he was still a fave. Unlike pusses like Vukota, shaved primates like Brashear and goons like Dave Brown, Probie was all class. When he and guys like Kocur stopped playing I was pretty much done. The game was never the same. Miss ya Probie

I think about his I friends, family his kids and his wife. He gave up his life for his teammates and did it with classHe also did it for the fans. . That’s just rare man. He really was a “nice guy” like he said. People forget hockey is a very competitive physical sport and even opposing teammates will grab a beer after fighting each other. It’s a paid job. It’s like porn. It’s a job. It Probert gave to foundations visiting dying 5 year olds ,who does that? I’ll be 51 in January so I saw probert live and he was one in a trillion. His heart was always in the right place and I loved the fact he didn’t showboat and did everything with class with his teammates, his fans, kids he didn’t know who had terminal illnesses, a class act. He was the total package and the guts to just destroy goalies and such a calm nice guy off the ice. It’s still heartbreaking. I don’t cry ever shy I never cried for another player it’s weird but I cried hard when he died and it’s like you said he was one in a trillion on every level. I’m happy you enjoyed my comment I can’t help it the guy was a special kind of special and I’m it going to holdback how I felt and still feel about him. Stay Gold man and enjoy the hockey season. I think for a fighter to be in the HOF he has to possess more than just modest skill. I shouldn't use Clark Gillies as a comparison, but he was as intimidating as Probie while scoring 30 goals] and 75 points a year, and with less than 100 PIM per season. I couldn't resist looking up Probert's stats, recalling that early in his career he definitely had the ability to put the puck in the net. He played 935 NHL games and had just under 400 points, not bad at all for an enforcer. The stat that really caught my eye were his outrageous 3300 minutes in penalties. OK so do the math, of the 935 games he played he served the equivalent of 56 games in the penalty box. One of a kind...RIP Bob.

He made an all star team and it wasnt a charity case like it was with John Scott. Dude was a 29 goal scorer skating mostly grinder minutes (though he did play on one of their PP lines) and even got a few selke votes one year. Even though he was a mountain in his day and had a penchant for being in the right place for rebounds he wasn't just a big body tap-in guy either, he had a sneaky accurate wrister and deceptively soft hands. My favorite stick actually had a Probert pro curve blade, so he was at the very least good enough to sell sticks at one point in his career. He got pigeonholed and his lifestyle caught up with him later in his career, but anyone who says he was just a goon never actually watched him play.

Bob Probert is the number1 enforcer In NHL history, period. he played 15 season or something like that! Think about that. Night after Night and the role he had!! Most guys won't Last 3seasons doing what he did. And besides all this he was actually one of the greatest fighters if not the greatest. Huge respect for him! I grew up idolizing him, read stories from ProHockey magazine about fighters and Probert was my favourite of them all. Im From Finland and we couldnt watch NHL back then, now thank god for KZbin so I can see everything about him!

Yeah but he used steroids in the past. Imagine if the Boogeyman had used steroids at 6’7 heavy puncher...

Bob's teammates all spoke of his great sense of humor and fun loving nature. In the movie about his life you could see it constantly while playing with his family. You are sorely missed big guy, may you Rest in Peace.

The documentary "Tough Guy" on HBO is quite revealing. Probert certainly seemed like a decent guy, who knew his place in the NHL, but also he was pretty damn skilled as a player too, to make it to the All Star Game with Steve Yzerman reppin' the Wings... Yzerman tells the story of superstars Messier and Gretzky at the All Star game asking him to introduce Probert to them, as they really wanted to meet Probert, above all else that was going on, he was that well liked.

Hockey enforcers are always very insightful, intelligent, honest and funny, self deprecating. What they did was a job,one that isn't around anymore. I don't really miss the fighting but do miss the way the NHL once was:fast and tough. I think it was more fun to watch than today's game.

My favorite thing during every one of the many Red Wing home games I saw at the Joe was when someone would scream out "PROBERT!!" just before Karen Newman belted out "..And the rockets red glare..." during the national anthem.

@@wesmclaughlin7580 agree, Probie wasn't a goon, just a rugged player. The thing that separated him from other fighters was his ability to take a pounding and still throw punches. Always stayed on his feet!

I grew up watching Bob playing with Yzerman in Detroit and he was the best of his era and probably all time, he dominated the nhl enforcer role for a decade and unlike most of his peers he could really play the game as well often playing on the top line with Yzerman. The game was obviously different back then if you stepped out of line you had to back it up more,i hardly watch it today as i just find the showboating and yapping from behind visors a little pathetic to be honest.A brave man with a kind heart.RIP#24.
