I really enjoyed your memories of San Berdino. I moved there as a kindergartener in 1940Dad was overseas, so my Mom and kids lived on 11th near Mt Vernon. I also attended Mt Vernon School, (thx for the picture!) and later Lincoln. Left the state in 1945 ,but back to SB often as grandparents remained till they pased in mid 70sTheir neighborhood changed so much from the time they bought the acerage and built a 1000 sq foot house in 1925 (for about 1500 dollars!!!!! Their house is still there, and also my favorite tree where I sat for millions of hours reading in a tree seat the branches formed. Happy carefree days for a child, except for missing Dad and the news of the war.

I loved your story of San Bernardino. I grew up there too, and I'm about your age (born Nov 1945). When my family first moved to San Bernardino from San Diego, I was 5 years old, and we lived on a street that ran into the Mt. Vernon Drive In, pretty much across the street from Valley College. I think that was one of your neighborhoods. I see bobbender5858 below leaving a similar message. He says he graduated from Pacific in '65. I graduated from there in '63.

This is so damn cool!! Thanks so much for this series. My dad's cousin worked at the Santa Fe depot, I think he was an electrician. When we visited from the Bay Area, he would give us a tour. It was so much fun for a kid to see all the enormous engines and trains housed inside that gargantuan building. All that's left is the smoke stack....

I've really heard it was amazing when things were booming. Had a feeling of growth within a small town feel. I wish there was more video/footage of how things were from the late 60's to the early 90's before it went sideways. Because you're not the only person that's said that. I've lived here since 2014, I am a teacher in the district and it is sad that when I say that I live in San Bernardino, most of the time, it's met with a subtle groan.

Too much power to government. I grew up in San Bernardino. I left 7 years ago to Phoenix. I went back home in 2018 and it was disgusting what my city looked like. In less than a decade it had falling into poverty. I grew up with fruit trees on every corner. Huge beautiful sunflowers growing wild in lots. Picking sour flowers and sucking on them as we walked home. I didn't understand until I started looking at city records and hands of power. We don't need officials. Life seriously. If you are going to work for a government. It should be pure voluntary work. You should be watch with great scrutiny and every dollar questioned. No one person should have control over money nor power, in any situation. Ever. Period. I am working so hard with God to allow Him to restore my city back to what is was. If not greater.
