+The Wise Penguin I love Bob Ross, but even he was aware that this was meant to be art for the people, not stuff for the museums of fine art. That's the magic of this technique (wet on wet painting) - it's stuff anyone could do with just a little guidance. The painting hanging in museums, while sharing many of the same aspects of composition, generally offer far more detail and elaboration on individual aspects. I recommend checking out the famous landscape painter Albert Bierstadt if you want to see landscape paintings that actually are hanging in the museums. That being said, Bob Ross was an accomplished painter in other styles as well and his legacy as an inspirational teacher is unquestioned.

To say Bob Ross is talented is an understatement. When I draw environments I have to draw out a horizon line and plot everything before I paint: usually taking 3 hours, Ross just lunges forward and solves all the perspective problems in a matter of minutes. The world truly is a darker place without him.

He would do 3 paintings, one before to practice and to use as a guide. Thr one we see on the show. And a fancier one afterwards to show at events. Still it's truly amazing and I know what you mean about tracing. Especially If you use acrylic paint.
