“Cancelling” people who commit heinous acts is fine. Cancel Kevin Spacey for preying on young men. Great. But cancelling a comedian for making a joke ABOUT Kevin Spacey preying on young men is ridiculous. Nothing should be off limits to joke about. Everyone’s is offended by different things and everyone’s taste in jokes is different. So if there is no standard for what’s funny and what’s not, then everything should be on the table to joke about.
@lookbovine2 жыл бұрын
Not being able to do an advertising campaign is not being “cancelled” though. If they want to be more commercial they have to tailor their act for that…otherwise it was their choice and they can continue to play venues their act is for, and they will.

As far as cancel culture is concerned, I think Talib is absolutely correct (around the 7:00 mark) when saying that the problem lies in those ill-equipped to handle these kinds of conversations. When you have platforms like Twitter, which reward one kind of speech, the kind that consists of a language built by those intelligent enough to actually moderate their application, what you have is an entire network of millions all vying for the same position. All trying to gain distinction as a voice for one cause and one agenda. And while I can agree with many parts of that agenda, philosophically, I don't want just anyone speaking on it. As someone who spent the bulk of my twenties falling asleep to Malcolm X and James Baldwin lectures, I'm very sensitive (in a reactive sense) to those who are able to properly move society forward and those who are only in it for the attention. Right now, we have at least a hundred people in it solely for the attention to every one person actually in it to responsibly adjudicate on these issues -- whether that's someone who told a joke that may or not be intended as racist or a celebrity who may or may not have violated another person's boundaries. These matters need intelligent people at the wheel. There's just no two ways about it, which is why Talib makes such an excellent voice for the cause. He's sufficiently (and substantially) educated, he possesses wisdom, he's coherent (and poignant) and he knows how to withstand criticism and argue a point. He perfectly represents those with a platform who thoroughly deserve it, so for anyone who simply adds "ally" to their Twitter bio thinking they belong in the same class, take several steps back and really look at what it is you bring to the table. At the end of the day, it's about moving things forward. Not sideways and certainly not backwards. Forward. And we need intelligent operators to do just that, and as a result we need far more people of substance to really stand up and point this out so that the room can get a little less crowded, a little less noisy and whole lot more productive.
@dougschimpf87333 жыл бұрын
Malcolm x woulda been cancelled nowadays for sure. They shot him then who knows wtf would happen nowadays. His ideas didn’t fit with the super liberal ideas that disagreeing with gets you canceled nowadays. The problem is that we completely removed truth. Truth is dark and uncomfortable and to fully reveal truth you have to say what would be considered cancellable shit. RIP patrice o’neal he’s the most needed comedian of all time nowadays
@rickycouture72243 жыл бұрын
@@dougschimpf8733: Patrice gets more and more relevant by the day, no doubt! I do push back a little against the idea that it's Super Liberalism that's the culprit, though. Liberals may be the easy target, especially with so many on the Left openly vying for "safe spaces" and other things that make them appear drastically unfit for the real world, but I still can't pretend that the most sensitive, defensive and easily outraged group in this country isn't still the right-wing. The only two sensible groups I see, when you boil it all down, is progressives and (in most cases) Libertarians. Not because their politics are always correct, but because they can at least withstand criticism and discomfort without needing to see someone fired or feathered-and-tarred. And even among these different political groups you have other dividing lines, particularly in regards to race and class. I feel those who've experienced poverty tend to have much thicker skin and are far less affected by the daily drama that influences the rest of society, especially those who spend a large portion of their day on social media. Then, I would also say that black Americans tend to have much thicker skin than the rest of us. If you look at which people are actually fanning most of the flames when it comes to racial issues, it's almost always white people. We become so desperate to shed our own guilt that we're quick to throw it onto the first person who says the wrong thing, regardless of whether or not doing so will lead us towards progress on the issue. In general, really, it's white people on either political side that have the hardest time accepting alternative points of view. I think that's why Patrice O'Neal was such a refreshing voice in the first place, because he exposed something deeply hypocritical and flawed within us all. He strangely became one of the strongest voices of reason on the planet, in large part because he spent so much time around every different kind of white person. His understanding of White America was about as sharp as anyone who's ever lived, which is what made his comedy so sharp. I think the same could be said about Malcolm X from a political sense, on a much different level, which is ironic when you consider that Malcolm X spent so much time in Boston during those formative years. There's something about that experience, the good and the bad, that gave each of them a very unique perspective. Food for thought, I suppose...

These are open platforms though, so no one can police who is qualified for what. The public and private companies need to just realize most are actually more like trolls than activists. Also remember George Carlin’s great rule of thumb, “Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.” where typically only average and below average people have time for that shit.

@@lookbovine: I know no one can police Twitter, and in the big picture I'm glad they can't, but my point is more to the general attitude towards public speaking. Back in the day we had a hierarchy, a clear one, that for the most part was based on intelligence. Those with it were reserved the time and space to talk where those without it (or those just lacking in leadership) just listened. Now everything's different. Ironically, I think of MLK's speech where he talked about the "drum major instinct". This was something he was aware of back then, but the nature of people has since taken a dramatic turn for the worse. Society's in desperate need for leadership and meanwhile we have everyone raising their hand, believing themselves to be the answer. It just doesn't work that way. Even in George Carlin's day there was a hierarchy. Intelligence was still an issue, but people knew (generally speaking) when to speak up and when to stay silent. There weren't a million cooks in the kitchen, whereas today it takes very little for a person to feel qualified. Especially when they get 500 likes for simply having a blue checkmark next to their name.

The fact that so many of you are buying into this cancel culture, woke and pc narrative is infuriating. Have you ever noticed, the people crying the loudest about these things are on every platform? They never shut up and have the most exposure. These terms are used to shut down critiques. Oftentimes, the most bad faith and disingenuous people are crying about this because they want to spread lies, disinformation or target marginalized groups. Eff em! People can sense when someone is being intentionally hurtful or when the outrage is disingenuous. 90% of the outrage coming from a lot of people is just clowns trying to mimic cable punditry. Fox News discourse is how all media operates now.

I have written a book that I know today wouldn't get published. When you have a comedic mindset we tell jokes not to offend but to laugh and highlight things that seem to be bad or inappropriate. All comics will understand what I am trying to convey. Another fact is also most not all comics will agree they have developed comedy that comes from their own struggles it's like a defence mechanism. God would not have given us the ability to laugh if we shouldn't have a sense of humour

I remember when comedy was part of the unfiltered culture within a zeitgeist. Everything was on the table, it created bridges to talk about difficult topics. But it's cheap no thought or depth, just like political jokes.

how can talib say mostly women do not lie about this and then turn around and say he has been accused a bunch of times for no reason? Regret is not rape either but for many women those two things are equated. When a guy hooks up with a woman while black out drunk, he's a rapist. When a woman does it, she's a victim. How does that make sense? And what's also missed about rape is that it's mostly repeat offenders. there are select few men who molest / rape, the vast majority of men do not - so calling it a rape culture is just misleading.
