I worked in small-market radio in the 1990s. One day, I got a phone call. It was Bob Seger! He seemed so down-to-earth and humble. He wanted to know if we had all of his albums. Being small-market we didn’t always get great service from the record labels, especially for older product. A few days later, we received a package from him with copies of all of his albums.

I met Bob many years ago in the mid 70’s at a party. Very up scale neighborhood in Fairfax VA. I don’t know who lived there, as I was in attendance as a guest of my cousin. There were two people there that I recognized. One was obviously my cousin, and the other was Bob Seger. We spoke for about 15 minutes or so, and he was every bit the average guy. No attitude or ego, just another guy at a party. Very cool 😎.

I met Mr. Seger several times. He would not remember me. He was a gentleman, generous, soft spoken, looked after his people. Very kind. I was a bartender in a large club. He played there occasionally. I always volunteered for concert nights. Very long shifts. Usually came in around 2pm, with a bar back, a cook, and maybe another bartender. LOL, even with house lights up, it was an empty cavern. When the busses pulled in, the security jumped into action, and the roadies went to work. Mr Seger sat off to the side, at the bar, at a table, and watched his kids work. If one ran up to ask this or that, he answered softly, and let them do the job. Those kids ate like they had never seen bar food before. Sound checks sounded like falling pots and pans. Then, they all disappeared, except the stage manager. Our DJ came in, and another sound check. The two hours, or less, before opening was a huge, dim graveyard. Our DJ would eventually start cranking us up. Around 8 or so, the club packed with 2,000 people, the concert started. Mr. Seger stayed with his people after the show. The roadies tore it all down, wheeled it all out. Maybe 5 am before the club was ready to shut down. Mr. Seger was there, smiling at the antics. Good days.

I've always felt that the line "Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" is about the loss of innocence that comes when people you thought were your friends betray you or desert you when you're down. You didn't know that they weren't reliable or faithful, but they insisted on proving that negative thing about themself.

I'm a child of divorced parents long ago- - and this song became my song for my dad ever since the Universe cracked in half that year. It's one I grew up listening to in our living room when they were still together, and became more appropos after he left our family.... in his own personal struggle, he was always running against the proverbial wind- it's a song that always brings me back to my childhood joy and pain. I lost my dad to cancer 10 years ago this December and I miss him every day, and this song brings me back to him.... thanks for listening to this special song and understanding the meaning in the lyrics. Bob was a one-of-a-kind musician whom i've adored all my life... :)

So, few videos from Bob. It's a shame. This song, and many of his most popular songs predated MTV. So there was no need. But in the internet age, without video, artists from the past get forgotten. Thanks for taking the time to give this one a listen. "Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time" is said to reflect on the touring life of a musician. And the title of the song, from a common expression from running cross country during high school, transferred to a metaphor about aging. One critic called it a song about "crumbling hopes and the recognition of limits", but after this reflection, I'm left feeling the resolve to keep going. A few songwriters cite this song as one that influenced their country music lyric writing in the 1990's. And Eagles co-lead Glenn Frey, adds to the background vocals on his long-time friend's record.

Bob Seger took a significant break in his music career to prioritize time with his family. He wanted to be there for his children in their early years. I've always respected that, few at the top of their game would make that decision. I think some of his lyrics reflect that inner struggle he must have felt.

My cousin wound up smashing it with a rock while they were in rest stop bathroom.
