Don't underestimate how rare and special your skill set has to be in order to be a major league catcher. That's one of the toughest gigs in all of sports, mentally and physically. Bob is a multi talented guy

In his entire major league career,Bob Uecker only got 15 home runs,total. However 5 of those were off of Sandy Koufax. When Uecker would come up to the plate,he'd smile and wave "Hiya Sandy!" and Koufax didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

watched uecker for years - used to listen to him do the games on radio & turn the tv volume down - he was the #1 act in milw for years - and as I watch him on carson youtubes all these years later I think he had the best timing of any comedian I've ever seen - exquisite - can you imagine being a hitter with him behind the plate -

Artie Lange and Norm Macdonald spent a day with Bob out in Maryvale Stadium where the Brewers played their Spring Training. They both stated that Bob was their true Baseball radio play by play God. Go and look up Artie's appearance on Letterman. Hysterical! Bob told them about a prank the radio guys played on the great Harry Caray at Don and Charlie's in Scottsdale. This was the mid 70's. You could very often, if you were polite and respectful to the police, have a friend come and drive you home, with a stern warning only. There really was no zero tolerance policies until the MADD Mothers got into Reagan's ear in the early 80's. The humor of the time reflected the lack of consequences associated with drunk driving.

Back then it wasn't a big deal to drink and drive. It became a big deal when a group called Mothers Against Driving Drunk was all over the TV and news papers with statistics and with actual family members who had lost family members who were killed by drunk drivers.

Years ago, a friend of mine was going to college on a gymnastics scholarship. He had had a few drinks and got pulled over and the cop asked him to walk the white line in the road. He dropped onto his hands and walked the line on his hands. He flipped back up and asked how he did. He got out of jail the next morning.

I watched the HOF speech tonight - I think that's how I got here. Some of the same jokes, of course, but it's eye-opening to me: I never knew he was a player, so all his jokes about not being very good didn't really land. But here he is, presumably early in his broadcasting career, and he's just got amazing ability at storytelling. Lord bless him

Bob Uecker's career BA is .1997 rounds up to .200. He had 14 HR's including off of Sandy Koufax and Ken Holtzman. In 1965 vs. Koufax he batted .400, 6 for 15 with HR , 2B, 2 RBI. He faced Koufax more than any other pitcher 38 AB 7H .184 BA.

Bob Uecker did not play in the majors for 14 years. He played on 6 seasons, for 4 different clubs (2 years for the Bobston Braves 2 years for the St Louis Cardinals, 1 year for the Phillies and his last year split between the Phillies and the Atlanta Braves). Maybe he meant to say he had been a broadcaster for 14 years???

Uecker is on another Tonight Show Episode on 6-25-81 and Col. Blake from MASH was also a guest that night as he is here. They must have booked the same guests every few years. lol
