When I went to the US to learn English in the eighties, I got to listen to those great play by play guys like Scully, Caray and Uecker, of course, besides others. I'm a radio guy myself, I prefer to listen to the games on the radio, and to listen to those legends call their games was really great. Thank you for sharing this great video 👍

Back in the "80's" during the Brewers haydays, my family and I would sit in the outfield bleacher "cheap seats" with a radio and listen to Uecker announce the game. He always made me laugh with his antics. Thank you Bob. I still enjoy listening to him when he does the Brewers home games now. I'm also from Wisconsin.

Bob uecker only hit 14 home runs in his career, but 4 of them were off future hall of famers. Rollie Fingers, Gaylord Perry, Sandy Kofax, and Fergie Jenkins.

That is more then 14 that I hit.

That hit me, too. He was such a non-threat that I think the Boys took an at-bat off. They thought they could rest? There is not other explanation, ha, ha! Even if I was a marginal player and short career.... I would walk up to strangers on the street and tell them I hit an HR off Sandy Koufax.
@Tyrunner00977 күн бұрын
I don't think he hit one off Fingers. He did off Fergie, Perry, and Koufax, though. Perry always said giving up that HR to Uecker was THE worst moment of his whole life.

I attended a bachelor party dinner at the famous Scottsdale restaurant Don & Charlie's in 2001 Spring training. Halfway through dinner that including fried frog legs, we realized that Euk and his lady were a few table away. Baseball celeb sightings at D&C's were common, but we all loved Euk when we were 70's baseball yoots, long before the movie came out. After several minutes of a dozen 35 year old's giggling we realized that no, we're not going over en masse to yell just a bit outside at him. He noticed our colloquy but seemed unfazed by it since a) he's one of America's most beloved and recognizable spirit animals and b) we left him alone until we were leaving. He then appeared to notice were leaving & allowed us to come over and say hello, which we did quickly/respectfully which he appreciated and graciously returned, even though he was in a place and time where he's universally popular and recognizable. James Hetfield hanging out at CBGB's at 8pm on a weeknight. That's my Bob Euk story.

In my APBA Baseball 1966 season replay, Uek crushed a walkoff grand slam at home (he was with the Phillies) against the Astros, AFTER Bob Aspromonte of the 'stros crushed a grand slam to to take the lead in the top of the 8th. Next day, Uek is shagging flies in the outfield. With a tuba...

Just last month I read J. Bouton's "Ball Four". About the 12th time. I like to do it each baseball season. He made baseball very funny, for me. I know that baseball is changed, and they don't want old fans. But, if they don't think that a young version of Bob Uecker is good for sales/marketing? They are just missing what makes baseball a great sport. NFL is super serious. NHL has a lot of pride. NBA is a joke. MLB should be fun and funny. Also, it is magic on the radio. No other sport can match it on the radio/in your imagination. Things go in cycles, and I'm always hoping baseball returns to guys like Uke, Scully, Carey, Mel Allen. They shouldn't be legends of the fall.
