My granddaddy, Elmer, was a MASSIVE fan of Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys. He introduced me to the guitar and to the wonderful sounds of this group. My granddaddy was a simple man, a carpenter, and a family man. He was my family’s patriarch, and he made it to the age of 97 years old when he passed away in 2016. He was one of the most honest and good men I ever knew and I cherish the time that I was able to spend with him. I’m listening to this song in your honor, my dear sweet granddad. I miss you and I love you with all my heart. ❤

I have a CD album of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. I love it to pieces! I lived in San Antonio back in the early 1970s. I made two friends there (an older couple who passed on long ago), and they introduced me to the music of Bob Wills.

Country and Western is a forgotten music. It was to Country Music what Disci was to Rock N Roll. Country music people didn't like it. Neither did most Rockers care for Disco.

@vernanderson43586 ай бұрын
Beautiful music with heart and soul sung by individuals with clarity of voice. Today horrible stuff passed for " Music" belched out by strained voices ,breathy and scratchy, with no voice quality. Notice the 3 lovely ladies,? No purple hair, no heads shaven, no gawdy jewelry from noses ,eyebrows and who knows where else, 'trying" to "appear" avant garde. Just natural beauty. AND wearing clothes to boot. Today less than good looking, poor singers distracting onlookers With skin showing to mask their lack of talent. And we call such progress? Me thinks NOT.
@colinpurssey98754 ай бұрын
I 100% agree with you .The popular music over the last few decades has degraded into a gaudy and grotesque visual and sonic miasmic phenomenon . Screaming indistinct vocals , virtually devoid of recognizable melody , and largely reliant on radically flamboyant attire and bedazzling stage effects to seduce impressionable audiences . It's utter crap as far as I'm concerned !

This is great, but why is Bob wearing a bad toupee? He wasn't bald, but I guess they didn't like his receding hairline(?) If they were so concerned about cosmetic appearances they should've given Tommy some dentures.
@nathangarrett8142 Жыл бұрын
I have a couple questions. Is Bob Wills the band leader and he just has guest singers on his records? And his primary instrument was the fiddle/violin? Also I notice he does this high pitched call and response, is that how his voice sounded or he was purposely altering it?
@solominded10 ай бұрын
He was the band leader, and his wife was the band manager in the later years. Leon was also the band manager. Bob Wills did sing on many songs, but what made him and the Playboys special was the act. They NEVER had a set list and played songs on a "as needed" basis, depending on what the crowd was feeling. THAT is what made seeing them so special. The band memorized THOUSANDS of songs, and no one in the band knew what Bob would want to play next. They were expected to know every part. Sometimes, he would sing, but mostly Tommy would sing in the beginning years. It was all about the feel. Bob would make sure in every performance that every band member had a chance to show their style and made sure to showcase it. Sometimes, the fiddle would be lead, sometimes the steel, sometimes the jazz section. It's what made them so special. And that high-pitched voice was his signature. Those were some of the first "ab-libs" in recorded music and are still used to this day in the country and, most noticeably, rap music. If you heard those "aahaaa's" coming out of Bob, it meant he was really feeling the tune, and that was his way of expressing that. Truly, one of the greatest performers and bands of the 20th century. To this day, Leon is considered to be one of the all-time greatest steel guitarists, and Elon, one of the greatest rythum guitarists to ever live.
