its not going to be the same. Matt Reeves wants the movies to be squarely focused on Batman. So you could still have great performances from the villains, but not quite as in depth look at the characters like the show is able to do since its about them specifically.

That's what I thought, especially with how creepy he acts when he's calming her down and asking her what she saw. We know that this universe doesn't always use the real names of characters with Oz Cobb and Edward Nashton, Julian Rush could be a new name for an old character.

I have a theory about Sofia’s psychiatrist is Hugo Strange or Jonathon Crane plus since this is a realistic take on Batman and I hope we get more of Arkham, Oz and Viti rivalry is really fkin crazy asf plus Sofia is such a interesting character and Maroni’s v The Falcones is such really cool dynamic for the corrupted crime ridden lore of Gotham I can’t wait to see what happens next. The Penguin is really cool superhero gangster crime thriller show I love it.

My theory is that Eve Karlo will be future Clayface, not just because she shares the same name "Karlo", but because i think she might be a undercover cop. Clayface has a great arc in the The Batman'04 animated show, and before he becomes clayface in that show... he's a cop.

Great breakdown! Love all your attention to detail in these. A few random thoughts: Did anyone else get majorly skeeved by how the therapist grabbed and held Sofia? It felt inappropriate, like he was crossing an ethical line. Also, the blocking looked s*xual at times, so that added to the uncomfortable feeling. I wonder if we’re going to find out that he did take advantage of her in Arkham, or is still taking advantage of her now. For some reason Oz being one of those people for whom cilantro tastes like soap endeared him to me even more. Loved the callback to Oz being fluent in Spanish! “No habla español, fellas?” You get the sense that Eve truly cares about Oz, but Oz holds her at arm’s length by insisting on paying her. She tries to protest by saying it’s too much, but I think what she’s really saying is that he doesn’t need to pay her at all, that she would want to be closer to him if he let her. But he’s afraid to let her in because he’s afraid that he’s unloveable and that every relationship he has is transactional. You see how this works in the relationship with his mother. She says, “if my son is a nobody, then who am I?” She will love him if he does well and rises to kingpin, but if he doesn’t, then she won’t love him. That’s the message she has taught him, and the lie he believes is true. I think Oz’s arc in this series is going to be what is called in screenwriting terms as a negative change arc. That’s where the protagonist is presented with the answer to his true need and rejects it to retain belief in his lie. We know that Oz wants to come out on top as the kingpin of Gotham, but what he truly needs is to be loved and admired unconditionally. In a positive change arc, these two things would come into conflict, and eventually Oz would realize he doesn’t need to be kingpin because he’s found unconditional love, and he would change for the better. This is going in the opposite direction. Oz and Vic will become closer and Vic will rise to Oz’s challenges and become a true protege, making Oz quite proud of him. Vic will look up to Oz the way Oz looked up to Rex Calabrese, and Oz will feel like maybe he really can be that great man who was so admired in his neighborhood. But something will happen where Oz is presented with a choice. In order to become kingpin, Oz will have to give up that admiration and love, and he will choose to do so. Whether that’s him having to kill Vic himself or letting Sofia do it or something else, it has to be Oz’s choice, not something that just happens. Then Oz will obtain what he thinks he wants while throwing away what he truly needed, and the negative arc will be complete. Really tragic.

This show is so good, all it does is piss me off that the film(s) aren't afforded the same level of creative freedom that allows for such an in depth, *adult* exploration Batman/Bruce himself.

An exploration of Bruce doesn't really require an R rating. He's not a psychotic gangster who murders people. An R rated batman film could be great, but more so necessary because of the world around him rather that Batman himself. Either way, a pg13 rating can do it plenty of justice. It's on the director/writer though in regards to how deep they want to go with it. Matt Reeves at least seems like he wants to go deeper than previous depictions since he has the movie, and presumably future movies, take place almost entirely from Batman's perspective.

I guess what I mean is, I wanted to see more of Bruce's inner rage let out in private moments; a la the scene in Batman Ego where he goes back and forth with his inner beast. Or more inner monologues, where he gives us his thoughts about what's happening around him, as he faces Gotham's bandits. I wanted a ragey sparring/ workout session, etc. Hopefully as the films move forward, we get some of that, as he's less wet-behind-the-ears.

How he beats the first criminal at the train station and even at the end when he saves catwoman and Gordon has to stop him. It just doesn't force feed it to you. You have to put together the way he is feeling for yourself

So far in each episode, there's been one scene heavily relying on a lot of luck. In the first episode we had Victor's flawless execution and timing of the delivery of Alberto's body, and here we have Oz taking his time in the basement with Maroni's guy with no guarantee no one was going to barge in and catch him. But just one kinda contrived moment in each episode amidst so much incredibly fabulous writing and acting? I have no right to complain, and I couldn't be much more happy with what we're getting!

his being lucky and having to think on his feet is kind of the point. He's not sure when he goes into those situations that he'll win or get out of it. The only way is through, as he says. He constantly has to adapt and change. Victor didn't plant the jewels, he was almost stabbed by the Maronis, unexpectedly had to ride on the truck, etc. It's only 'contrived' in the sense that we wouldn't have a story to watch if he failed at any of those points

The tombstones at the end of the episode confirm that The Batman is set in 2022. However, the 2022 calendar doesn't match with Bruce's journal entries. "Thursday, October 31st..." should have been Monday. "Wednesday, November 6th..." should have been Sunday.

In regard to your criticism. I agree about plot armor but I did think that they set up penguin as being an adrenaline junkie from his conversation with Vic. I feel like Oz’s idea is go big or go home. He has the confidence in himself that he can get out of any situation. So my thought is that if he was caught with Evard that he thought he would have been able to talk himself out of it and that if he didn’t do what he needed to that he’d be dead anyway. He is sloppy though and especially with Vic (who I agree probably should have been caught) who has now been seen that’s more stuff to deal with.

Penguin’s a real Xanatos Speed Chess master, isn’t he? Setting up a plan, taking unexpected developments in stride, making adjustments to the plan or outright throwing it out if need be. He’s like Littlefinger from Game of Thrones… y’know except without the creepy sense of entitlement toward specific women. Lol. And we get to fully see him react to unwelcome surprises and make adjustments on the fly. Come to think of it, that was sorta the issue with how the “grand plan” unfolded in The Boys Season 4 Finale. We didn’t really get to SEE the small intricate details involved, the necessary adjustments made, or the specific unexpected “curveballs.” The takeover just sorta… succeeded, and that was that.

Also. Could Theo Rossi be the scarecrow? I see many commenting on it, so it ain’t my idea. But some evidence of him being so, and ties into another theory is that: what if Theos character put Sofia in some sort of “trance” with that red light therapy to make her do the Hangman crimes and it really wasn’t Sofia all along, but Theo Rossis character. Obviously they’d have to explain how they may have known each other before she got to Arkham. But the picture you talked about in that room, the painting, could be some sort of sign that Rossi is scarecrow, hell even uh, that evil doctor in Gotham (tv series), I forget his name. But both could be a possibility. Edit: Hugo Strange, that’s the doctor. I know we got the name of Rossi’s character, but could he be some sort of iteration of him?

Anyone else get a feeling that the penguins prosthetic makeup was inconsistent throughout this episode, or was it just me? He looked younger in some scenes and sometimes he didnt have that grotesque look that we're used to from The Batman 🤔 That last scene with Sophia looked like his face was CGI in my opinion. Seemed strange 😅

I think Sophia is 1000% on top of Oz’s lies. I don’t think that mysterious “shipment” contains drugs. We’ll see. But I bet it’s revealed near the end of the season that she’s been waiting for him to put himself in a vulnerable position. Right up until it’s revealed the shipment is empty or it’s some kind of machine or never existed at all.

FANTASTIC episode!!! And I have a theory about Vick. I'll share it now because I haven't seen any clue other than him look at something a certain way. So, I'll probably be wrong anyway. But I think he used to be one of the Riddler's henchmen, or followers, or whatever you want to call them. I think he could've been one of the guys who helped Riddler park the vans along the seawalls or some shit or helped him in some other way. Or just been one of his 500 followers. I don't really know what's making me think this, but that's what I'm thinking. This show is so damn good I wish we could just binge watch the entire season, lol. I'll be here for the next breakdown!

Had Penguin NOT taken the risk of being discovered improvising his framejob, he'd have been killed anyway. That's WHY it makes sense. His moseying in, and out of the basement, and subsequently planting the knife was both, intentionally sloppy, and fully-necessary. It may seem lazy, or like plot-armor to us, but to the Penguin- it was something that couldn't be avoided. Doing nothing meant certain death. Against those odds, the likely chance of his being discovered, and being killed as a result were still better than just not trying at all.

Also, regarding shooting Sofia's bodyguard. It wasn't so much "impulsive" as it was beating Sofia to the punch to remind her that HE'S in charge. Tensions were extremely high. It was more about putting Sofia in HER place, rather than impulsive vengeance for his nephew.

So I’m confused. Didn’t vik have that jewelry to plant in the red car? The same jewelry that Sofia had at the end of the show? I could be just messing up the characters, but I don’t understand how she ended up with the bag of jewelry. So, if she does have it, does that mean Vik didn’t mess up the plan? I’m confused as hell. Can someone clear that up for me.

I think we're supposed to assume Oz had Vic go to Castillo's apartment to plant the jewelry when the plan fell apart to pin things on Viti. He likely would have had some time to do it before the Falcone's would have people go to check things out. Like Boba said, the stuff with Vic was a little sloppy. Seems a bit odd none of the guards that chased him off would mention anything after the fact. Although, I guess you could argue maybe they just chalked it up to some kid trying steal something out of it. Still, it does feel like a minor plot hole, but who knows? It could come back somewhere later in the series to haunt Vic and Oz.

It felt like vik calls penguin and that’s it, then he shows back up after burying the bodies, then the jewelry shows up with Sofia. Felt so strange how, to me at least, it went from those scenes with no explanation.
