I wish I could sleep on my back but I feel clausterphobic or like I"m going to choke, lol. I always sleep on my side or stomach but then I find myself tossing and turning constantly because I start to get a sore neck or headache. I do use alot of pillows and I even sometimes use the C-shaped maternity pillow.

Prayers for Bob and hope he's doing well. Mike is doing great, he had a tough roll to fill. It's an adjustment for everyone. It was kind of like watching a 20 year old advertising wrinkle cream, you want to see it work for an older person. But what y'all do is for all ages so it works good with Mike too. Love watching your videos, very helpful.

I am left side sleeper for 62 years (I am 79 yrs old), I got in the habit during my first pregnancy. Also in that positon, I sleep with right knee raised(similar to Mike's sleeping position). I sleep fitfully these days, but have learned to endure. Just a warning for Mike..you will get a wrinkled left cheek like mine. Not much I can do about mine now. Haha. Happy sleeping!

I had right hip replacement 8 months ago. I got Bob & Brad’s 8” wedge pillow before surgery. It’s wonderful for back sleepers. I’m still sleeping this way because now it’s not comfortable to be on either hip. But a great bonus: I think my facial wrinkles are fewer and less deep! I’m 75 years old and have used a satin pillowcase for 30 years, never smoked, so my wrinkles aren’t bad at all, but I do think my skin is smoother since gravity is pulling it to the back for 7-8 hours a day.

That's great to hear (about the wrinkles)! I started sleeping on my back 2 years ago after having surgery for the right broken femur bone. Three months ago I had a partial left knee replacement, so I definitely sleep on my back all night now. I use a pillow under my knees.

Just a couple of side sleeping comments: In another of your sleep videos, you demonstrated using a rolled up towel or special roll at the waist to keep spine in neutral position. That video showed a back view so you can see how the spine sags a bit without waist support. I've also read that sleeping on the right is better for those with heart /blood pressure issues. Thanks for your EXCELLENT channel!

According to most Cosmetic Surgeons, sleeping on your back helps to reduce new facial wrinkles from forming. They can always tell which side a person sleeps on by the increased wrinkles on one side compared to the other. This must be the explanation for Brad's youthful appearance!

I'm usually a back sleeper. I learned to use a bunched up pillow in log shape to support my neck and relax my upper spine. Eventually I discovered cervical neck rolls (think short pool noodles made out of memory foam). These are a godsend if you have a cold/sinus issues: you can lie closer to sitting up for better breathing and still use the roll to support your neck. Then sometimes I just want to sleep on my side, but I still have to have something supporting my neck. Thanks for the pillow between the knee trick for hip pain. You mentioned it in another video and it's the only thing that has relieved my dad's lingering hip surgery pain. Great videos all around!

Side sleeping on the left side also helps if you have acid reflux. Mike sleeps in what we call the Recovery Position in first aid. It’s how I sleep as well. I also hug a pillow while I’m sleeping. I can’t sleep on my back, or fully on my stomach (both bad for acid reflux). I do sleep on my side too, but the most comfortable for me is the recovery position.

I always slept on my left side. When I got a frozen shoulder, I had to sleep on the right. However I found that sleeping on my right I often wake up on my back in a lot of pain. It has always hurt to sleep on my back for some reason. I had awesome physical therapy that I religiously continued at home on my days off. The Dr said I would have to have shoulder surgery after it was unfrozen. But I committed to hard work for months and now unfrozen and pain free. NO SURGERY!!! I can even sleep on my left again. People don’t let a surgeon tell you surgery is the only way. I had torn ligaments but they are healed. I have very slight restriction in that left shoulder but I’m 95% there! Thanks for the great video.

GREAT INFORMATION!!! I wondered what was the best sleeping position. For years, I slept on my left side, (on my couch) which I believe is the direct cause of my left side pain and weakness. I always fall asleep sitting up (acid reflux), (now in my bed) with a pillow under my knees. I always have a heating pad for my lower back, then throughout the night switch to my right side again with a pillow between my knees and sleep like a baby. The left side pain is becoming less. Due to hip replacement on right side and need a hip replacement left side I have to sleep on my back. I do sleep with my mouth open so I tape it shut before sleep time at night. I try to keep mouth moist and not dried up by taping. I buy the 3M paper tape off Amazon its medical tape and easy to unstick and I only tape the middle so the sides of mouth are free and not covered if emergency. I am elderly and do what I can do. I wish I could sleep on my left side like I did for 65 years. But no more.

I buy the tape from Patrick McKeown's shop. I have all the family taping their mouths now at night and it has cured my son's snoring thankfully. A friend of his was staying over at the weekend and his snoring was so loud it was impossible to get any sleep so before he left the next day I handed him a sheet of mouth plasters to try out. Hopefully he'll get some relief from them.

I’ve been taping for the past two years. What a difference; no more dry mouth, nor dry sinuses. Living in Arizona, I was desperate for relief. I’m a back sleeper, so I imagine my mouth was open all night, ugh. And during the day, I’m more of a nose breather now. You’d be surprised how much we breathe through our mouths out of habit. The saying goes “breathe with your nose, eat with your mouth.” Like most things, change can be difficult, but can be accomplished. Bonus - better oral health, and fresher morning breath. I use Nexcare for sensitive skin, strong hold, pain-free removal tape. I hope this info has been useful. 😊

If you have GERD, you have probably found that while laying on your right side, the stomach empties easier, causing that burning sensation in your esophagus and can even cause some regurgitation of the stomach acid. Sleeping on the left side puts the stomach in a position where acid leaking is less likely. (PS: Many find that diluted Apple Cider Vinegar will cause the stomach sphincter to close for less reflux. Rinse teeth after, and I usually swallow a bit of fresh water too, for the esophagus.)

I have always slept on my side generally in a fetal position. When I was pregnant I was advised to sleep on my side with the legs scissored out a little, top one out in front and bottom to the back. This is more comfortable, especially for those with a larger belly. I also now always have a small "huggie pillow" that keeps my upper arm slightly elevated and alleviates the drag on the shoulder.

Thank you very much for this video. Recently, I had to change the height of my pillow. All my life, I used a flat pillow. It was never flat enough. As I age, my neck starting to hurt. My chiropractor said to try a fat pillow. It really works well. It seems that my body can’t compensate the older I get. I suggest trying one of those body pillows between your knees and to put your arm on for side sleeping

Thanks for that! I've been having nightmares trying to sleep - I was always the worst sleeper in the World! - but since I fractured 1/2-dz vertebrae from T10 down, & now my ribs are sitting on my hips, I have so little flex or mobility where my waist used to be (I am female) tossing & turning all night is not possible, although I often get up 2 or 3-times so I don't seize up. I think your message about pillows is a good one, because I have a mountain & I wish I didn't, so your demo helps me feel less guilty. I'm desperate to sleep on my side - I always used to - supporting my arm & knee, but now back-sleeping for over 2-yrs - my right pelvis also tried to rotate, which has made trying to sleep on that side impossible... I always thought sleeping on the left side was 'bad' but hearing this, I may give it a go - & my poor neck - will I ever wake up & not be in pain?! I have always slept with a bunch of pillows while side lying, surrounded by them; under my head, behind my back, one that I hug, and one between my legs. I have slept this way ever since I can remember. When I travel, I usually request for additional pillows to accommodate my sleeping habits, and it’s also why I prefer to sleep alone to this very day. Hopefully, it has paid off in the long run 😳🤣

I was a stomach sleeper in my youth. I put one leg up nearly to my chest and one leg straight. I didn't mind my face in the pillow and I slept so well. However, I kept hearing that back sleeping was best so tried to train myself to do that. Ending up being a side sleeper who sometimes wakes up on my back. I sleep with a pillow under my waist because my PT said my spine was sagging because of my hourglass shape. So one pillow under my head. one pillow under my waist and one pillow in between my knees. It's amazing what you can get used to when what you are doing gets rid of pain.

My husband is an arborist and often times uses a long pole saw for several hours. This often causes soreness in his shoulders. One thing that helps that you showed my pulling Mike’s arm forward when he was side sleeping. In that example his spine was a bit twisted. A way to support the back is to put a pillow behind your back and kind of tuck it in so that you can actually lean back slightly and relax your back against it. You’re still on your side but slightly leaning up and back against the pillow thereby alleviating stress on the shoulder joint.

I do this too, but for a different reason. I have a friend who has slept on her left side for most of her life, and the difference between the wrinkles and the sagginess on the left side of her face, as opposed to the noticeably more youthful looking right side, was a real lesson. So I decided to try putting a firm king size pillow behind my back to support sleeping more "lightly" on the side of my face, and it's very comfortable. I rest the length of my upper arm on my side , which I found is actually more comfortable than supporting

One thing not mentioned is allergies. I have to sleep on my back with two pillows because of sinus headaches. It does cause issues with my neck and lower back, but the headaches are worse! Snoring isn’t all bad, it keeps me from grinding my teeth. Well, except for my husband lol.

Yes, a wedge pillow would be better for you. It angles your torso up like a hospital bed, which should help with your sinuses.

I like side sleeping but only with one pillow for my head so my neck isn't so bent. It does cause a lot of discomfort for my shoulder and my arm. I often would put my arm under my pillow where my head would lay over top but it created an issue where it stopped the blood flow to my arm, waking me up to numbness. I now have an issue with my arm and wrist joints...

Thanks Brad and Mike! Just a question, for someone that tosses and turns a lot in their sleep but wants to maintain a good sleeping posture, do you have any tips that will help keep your body aligned/in place in order to stop or lessen the tossing?
@BobandBrad
@BobandBrad Жыл бұрын
We don't really. You would think that the pillows would fall off,but if you tuck them in tightly, you'd be surprised how less you'll turn. You could also try the wedge idea with your legs elevated, this makes it a little easier to stay on your back without all the tossing and turning for some people as well.

Interesting. Ever since my heart surgery (1.5 years ago) I have been sleeping with an adjustable angle wedge pillow for my back and a triangular pillow for my legs. I am not flat on my back but inclined. My wife reports that I do not snore as much as I used to. I was a side sleeper for pretty well my whole life until this time. Having two surgeries on my shoulder (rotator cuff repair and repair of a fractured greater tuberosity of the humerus) that is on the side I slept on has also not been very comfortable for returning to sleeping on my side. The inclined position has just become what I am used to now.

I used to sleep on my side, but my arms would go numb and ache. Also, I coughed a lot. After some experimentation, I raise the head end of the mattress about 6" and add a memory foam pad on top of the one in the foam mattress. I also put a pillow under my knees. I breathe much better, don't cough and no arm numbness. No pillow under my head to keep my neck straight. The memory foam cushinons my head.

I would add that there could be the potential for a fourth sleeping position for those who suffer with sleep apnea. That is sleeping on a wedge pillow - sleeping on the back at an angle.

With sport related injuries to my shoulder, elbow, hip, neck and lower back, any position that doesn't cause me pain at the moment is the one for me. It tends to be the side, but pillows and variances do occur.

I started sleeping on my back several years ago due to spondy. Then about a year ago I wanted to try a firm pillow and without realizing it, my neck became increasingly stiffer. So much so that when I drove, I had to turn my whole body to look behind me - I could not turn my head because of stiffness. I did not know why so I was doing the extension stretches, and the towel stretches. I talked with a PT. Then, on my own I decided to sleep with a pillow with minimal fluff like from the past. I was very surprised that immediately my neck stiffness went away and I could turn my head when I drove. This happened almost over night. I don't feel a need to do any of the neck stretches anymore. Lesson: Do not use a firm pillow if you sleep on your back.

I am a back sleeper who’s working on being a side sleeper. I use a CPAP machine so sleep apnea is addressed but I have also read that back sleepers are a much higher % of dementia patients. Why this is true is unclear but the consensus seems to be that sleeping on the side helps the brain to more effectively clear waste from the brain during sleep. But I don’t know, it’s just something I gleaned online but the references seemed credible to me. The nice thing about sleeping on your back is that the body is positioned in a neutral state. FWIW🤷🏻

Instead of a throw pillow, a light soft throw blanket is good to use because you can twist and manipulate it to fill in all the spaces like a body pillow.

I've grown up being a side sleeper. However the last 8 months I've been a back sleeper due adhesions in my pelvis and from pelvic congestion syndrome. So after all these 8 months of sleeping on my back, I now have ear pain. Went to the ENT and found out my earwax isn't draining since I don't sleep on my side. As for sleeping on my back, I now have to do warm ups for my upper back because the middle of my back hurts. And yes, I've changed my pillow 3x and use pillow under my knees

Years ago I pulled a muscle in my upper back. I couldn't sleep on my side, but I also couldn't use a pillow under my head while on my back. It took so long to heal that now I can't sleep with a pillow under my head. I do use a pillow under my knees, though. I keep my flat-ish pillow leaning against the headboard in case I roll onto my side. I pull it under my head and remove it when rolling onto my back, all without waking up. Anyway, the point of this long reply is..try to sleep with no pillow. I think that turning my head to one side or the other while sleeping on my back must help my ears because I don't have wax issues.
