I can't believe that this has to be spelled out for you people. Paulie was HITTING ON HER. Actually he was GOING TO hit on her until she answered that she was Bobby's niece. Paulie immediately backs off when he realizes that she is related to the deceased (Bobby) because it would be inappropriate. The fact that this isn't obvious to you and the 80+ people who liked your comment is scary to me. Talk about an inability to read people. Paulie's tone when he asks her who she is was CLEARLY meant to convey that he was going to try and bang her, and his tone instantly changes when she tells him that she is related to Bobby.

@@canaanite23 honestly i don't even think paulie knows what it means, and that's the point, he's illustrating that the kid is upset but can't really let it out and is just lashing out at anything. if you want to really know what it means: Ramus: literal translation from latin is "Branch", common use in anatomy to refer to an extension of bone(usually the pelvis groin or lower jawbone), or in zoology to refer to a barb/quill/feather. Framistan: a nonsense word made up by a 1940s radio host to describe a complicated and important piece of equipment he did not understand, similar to "thingamajig". Paternoster, latin for "our father", the Lord's Prayer. may also refer to certain beads on a catholic rosary that indicate the Paternoster should be recited, or a type of infinite looping elevator mechanism named for said rosary beads. effectively a simpler version of the line would be "the genitals/barb/feather crosses the thingamajig around our father". loosely, paulie could be coyly saying: A. "he's lashing out at random things he doesn't understand, because he's angry about the pointlessness of the life we live in service of 'our father', IE Tony" B."he's lashing out at random things he doesn't understand, because he's angry about the pointlessness of life, and doesn't see how god allows such pointlessness." C. "our strutting and preening about like peacocks showing their feathers is pointless in the eyes of God." implying they should pull their heads out of their asses and show some respect. D. "the balls on you people, for pointlessly posturing at a time like this when we should be showing respect and turning our eyes to god." with the same implication as C. E. potentially all of the above. even in his meatheaded stupidity, paulie has moments of sagelike wisdom. even if he doesn't realize it, paulie is seeing the crux of what AJ is getting at, even through the cluttered disjointed mess of philosophical jargon and prose and random complaints about life that AJ is actually saying. regardless, AJ is commenting on the pointlessness of it all, and paulie realizes that, but dismisses/downplays it. this is also why meadow looks at him that way but doesn't say anything or push back, because she had the same feelings over jackie jrs funeral and likewise had an outburst, she knows what he's going through even though she can't understand his words, while paulie understands his words but can't empathize with what he's going through.

Meadow looks at AJ with a measure of compassion when she hears his rant. She recognizes his internal tumult because it's what she went through when Jackie Jr. died and at the funeral. She's made peace with her views on life, death, and family, but can still recall the pain. So she doesn't get angry, she just gets quiet and let's AJ finish his rant. Meadow and AJ are perhaps the two most annoying characters in the show, but the writers did a good job at tying their arc together here.

We've been through countless funerals/processions over the course of the show ... and for the scene to abruptly shift from the proceedings to the gathering afterwards where theres nothing but food on everyone elses mind says one thing - no one really gave a shit .. the supposed notion of 'family' within this circle was absolute bs ... they ultimately cared only for themselves.

This is his best scene. AJ was starting to realize that something was wrong with the world around him but he somewhat misdirected it, albeit accurately, at politics and not his family. The one that was (also) built on the suffering of other people. I do think that if you were American 9/11 bled into anything back then, but the way it factors into AJ’s character is that he’s starting to wake up to the cold realities of the world around him. He just finds the truth in the wrong thing. “What rough beast slouches towards Bethlehem to be born” everything in his life is destined to end in destruction, the world around him is doomed, but it isn’t because of the war. It’s because his father is a mob boss.

9/11 still bleeds into a lot of things. The world we live in in the west is a byproduct of how 9/11 changed the culture. I try to tell young people as much as I can that things were incredibly different the day before 9/11. The world changed very violently. There was a national depression, anger, an identity crisis, fear that was kept on us for many years after. TV shows changed in tone to be grim, gritty, "realistic." There was no escaping it. We had precious few heroes in culture. The wars that seemed like they would never end, and they really didn't. 20 years later, they are finally "over" with body counts so unreasonably high... It can't be overstated. 9/11 fucked the entire western world. The economy, the political discourse, the fear that people had where they cut themselves off from each other, the perpetual surveillances by our governments

This was to me a top three scene in all of Sopranos. The director really did a great job at showing the "family" side to the maffia. How they are all gathered like this looks like any other family gathering, just really big. And how the young boys gets called up by their father to do things for the family. I also love how Medow looks at AJ with her worrying look, understanding that he doesnt want the maffia life, but she is going head first in to it. I don't know exactly what it is, but this is so greatly directed that I really felt for the first time just how much family is inolved. The concept of how everyone is a realtive, by blood or not. Just a great scene. I was also really baked the first time i saw it. but still

This scene was supposed to show the lack of caring of Americans amid awful times. I think it's the rare example where the writers got it wrong. Most funeral luncheons that I have attended there is not much sadness it's sort a little party to celebrate the life of whoever passed. you tell stories usually funny ones and people laugh. that's how they deal with the sadness. now if you're in a place that you're still hanging around drinking for 3 or 4 hours that's when the sloppy sadness and crying drunks start. that's not a pretty sight I usually try to leave before then.

+TheCoolProfessor Sometimes I think it would have been much more interesting if Paulie was A.J.'s father, rather than Tony! :) Maybe at least he'd grew some balls!... He's the most obnoxious and IRRITATING CHARACHTER THERE, GODDAMIT! The moron doesn't even know how to kill himself properly! :D ... I mean! - a 2mt's deep pool and a SEVEN METERS-LONG ROPE TIED TO A BRICK?? Come on! :D He could have EVERYTHING - he had the life on a GOLDEN PLATE, and all he did was complaining!...

+2serveand2protect I posted the same exact thing on one of these videos yesterday. Remember the scene where Carmella and Tony are punishing him by giving him chores to do, one of which is cleaning the gutters and AJ says, "What? Gutters? I don't know what you're talking about..." Or when, during the military school interview when asked if he had any questions, he says, "Yeah, why do the guys use 'that O thing' when they tell time?" Or when he returned from DC and the only thing he could comment on was the fact that the hotel room had freakin Nintendo..??? Grrrrr....

lucy girl You are DAMN RIGHT! He was given EVERYTHING, he was interested in NOTHING! There are boys and girls his age that are lucky if they have a BED and a ROOF TO SLEEP UNDERNEATH, but he is "DEPRESSED". He wants to be the big "man", but when he sees a young bear, tryng to get some food from the trash bins, he starts to cry like a pathetic baby, trembles and calls for his "maamaaaa!!! - maaamaaa!"! XDXD Christ - he was IRRITATING! ...sometimes - when I saw his mug I just turned the TV off, preferring to watch the episode later on...

What must it be like to live in a circle where your life is a constant procession of funerals, food, funerals, food, etc. You must get to the point where you think you're next at any moment, and people will eat immediately after your funeral. How many funerals has AJ gone to for "family"? He wasn't smart enough to express what was bothering him, but after 38 funerals for murdered family members (including his own dad almost dying twice), he must have felt something was very, very wrong.....

This is a really interesting scene, especially the Yeats reference. That poem is called The Second Coming, and is about how the end of the current cycle of existence draws near, and the new age of the Beast, emotionless but sensual, has arrived. Violence and chaos rule, and the best people lack any conviction, but the worst people live in passionate intensity.
@yannick245
@yannick245 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, AJ was incoherent and couldn't really verbalize his train of thoughts. So quoting Yeats was actually a good way, trying to express his feelings. It's not his fault that he's surrounded by buffoons. He was pretty spot on. Although as a conclusion voluntary taking part in Bush's unjustified/illegal wars doesn't make any sense.

it's about the end of the world, and was written shortly after ww1 I think, makes sense considering the 20th century was really the "beginning of the end". Makes sense in the context of the show too, considering it's the last episode, and the end of Bobby, Tony is also looking at a painting of Mt Vesuvius, which you could call an apocalyptic event, which shows their connection

I just realised now, this season AJ wanted to be Michael Corleone, he mentioned it when he tried avenging his father like the scene in the one, but here he was throwing around the idea of joining the army to protect America like the flashback in two.
