On this day in 1960 {May 23rd} "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #19 and spent 11 weeks in the Top 100... The B-side also charted, "I'll Be There", reached #79... "I'll Be There" was covered by Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1965; their version reached #14 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 and #1 on the Canadian Singles chart... It was also covered by Elvis Presley, Cissy Houston, and Cass Elliot...

As a man in my late 70s named Bill Bailey, this is my favorite recording of this song!

@@karlyg1693 I did not know that she was under-age of legal consent by a parent, as the legal age of 18 was not changed by a bill until 1970.

Actually, she was born in 1944 according to Dodd Darin’s book, Dream Lovers. She was 16 when they married in 1960. They were a beautiful couple.

@@marybirkel3421 Sandra Dee's mother “fudged” on Sandra's age. By adding 2 years and saying Sandra was 6, she could enroll Sandra in school thus freeing her up to go to work. I'm not sure if Sandra realized it at that time. This was in Dodd Darin's book.
