On this day in 1966 {March 6th} "I Fought The Law" by the Bobby Fuller Four peaked at #9 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it had entered the chart on January 23rd at position #75 and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #11 on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart... In 1975 Sam Neely covered the song; his version peaked at #54 on the Top 100... On Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart it charted three times; the above Sam Neely reached #61, Hank Williams Jr's version peaked at #15 in 1978, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band took their covered version to #66 in 1992... The Bobby Fuller Four's only other Top 100 hit was another covered song, Buddy Holly's "Love's Made A Fool of You", it reached #26 in 1966 {Cochise also covered the song in 1971 and it stayed on the Top 100 for 4 weeks, peaking at #96}... R.I.P. Mr. Fuller {1942 - 1966}..

This clip is from Hullabaloo. Right before the clip ends you can hear the horn section begin on the tune they used to go to commercial. Also I believe the female dancer is Lada Edmund, Jr.. I believe this song is one of the three coolest American rock and roll songs ever along with "Secret Agent Man" and "Dirty Water". They all came out within a few months of each other in '66. Only my opinion.

Always loved the clever thing they do on "six gun." What a fantastic song, what an amazing talent. And what a suspicious death. Years ago I listened to a whole podcast series about Bobby's life and death. Sounded like there was at least one very likely theory about who was behind it, but there was a cover-up -- and unbelievably, it was ruled suicide, which would be impossible FFS!

Few today know just how great Bobby was or how much he influenced music in just the few yrs he had. He took pride in his music and refused to have his music enhanced, he wanted it to sound just like when he preformed live. It was a sad day when he died on July 18, 1966, I'm glad to see so many young people who weren't even born when Bobby was alive appreciate his music as I do. There was so much more Bobby could have given us had he lived, one of the greatest. I'm glad I lived during those yrs.

Those of us who are old enough to remember when Bobby Fuller did this & other songs know why it sounds like the original though it's not. Bobby Fuller took extreme pride in his music wanted it to sound on recordings the way it did when he preformed live. If only those today took such pride in their music. To me it stands as a tribute to the great man and musican Bobby Fuller was.

@Angele101006 Bobby Fuller was more then just hot or a pretty face. He was probably the most awesome musican to ever come along. He accomplished more in the few yrs he recorded then any other musican. He was only 23 when he died what a sad day he could have contributed so much more had he lived. There is is site on You Tube if you have seen it which tells Bobby Fuller's life you might find it interesting.

Good to share a "yuk" with someone online for a change. You know, I can remember hearing this on the radio in 1966 when I was 14. What a great charge it was then. Milwaukee's Paul Stefen and the Royal Lancers covered the song in 1962; it provided them with a local hit, but it never made the national charts.[1] In 1964, Sammy Masters recorded his cover of the song. That same year, the song was recorded by Bobby Fuller and his band on his own Exeter label in El Paso, which solidified the band's popularity in the West Texas area with one of his biggest local hits." Wikipedia and big brother thanks.

Bobby Fuller was a great singer and a wonderful guitarist. He had a great rhythm style and he nails it live! As a guitar player myself I can attest to the fact that the guitar playing on this song isn't as easy as it seems. Bobby was amazing and he is worth exploring beyond this song, his biggest hit. His death is still something of a controversy. His producer, the late Bob Keane, told me he was brutally beaten to death and that the police covered up the facts. His death was ruled a suicide!

The song was written in 1958 by Sonny Curtis, and recorded in 1959 when he joined the Crickets, taking the place of the late Buddy Holly on guitar. Joe B. Mauldin and Jerry Allison continued their positions on the standup bass and drums, respectively, while Earl Sinks filled the role for vocals. The song was on their 1960 LP, In Style with the Crickets, and the following year appeared as the b-side of their single, "A Sweet Love". The song never received any airplay.

This sound is timeless. It sounds just as great today as it did 45 yrs ago when I first herd it. Today though instead of describing it as great the word totally awesome might be used. This sound will never die or go out of style, it's a shame that Bobby Fuller didn't live to see how timelss his music would become. Had he lived just think of how many other great songs he might have written.

Why argue about it. Its a great song, its been around for half a century, and its been covered so much because great bands like to play great tunes, no matter who did it first or how long ago it was. If the Crickets had gotten the song onto vinyl before the plane crash killed Buddy, that would have been the definitive version. Rock 'n roll forever!
@Ronnysan5016 жыл бұрын
I just heard on the radio today that this song was written for Buddy Holly.And after he died the Crickets recorded it and it went nowhere.Then Bobby Fuller recorded his version which was a hit. He sounds a lot like Buddy vocally on parts of the tune,and plays the guitar solo in what might be refered to as a Buddy Holly style ,though maybe not originally Holly's. Instead of single notes,it's done with chords("Peggy Sue" for instance), a great sound.
