Wow! I literally haven't heard this wonderful song in about 40 years!! Oh, the memories.... What an underrated song, too bad it didn't get the attention I think it deserved.

I've always liked this tune, takes me back to Jmy junior high days here in California. Glen Campbell also did a version, it's on the Wichita Lineman album. Both Bobby and Glen's takes on it are good.

How can you not love Bobby Goldsboro? Wish he was still an influence on our music industry. It greatly needs his genius.

Thanks so much for posting this great song! After hearing one of his cricket sounds in it, I had to listen a few more times to be sure it wasn't my imagination. He doesn't even crack a smile, but he sure slipped it in. How cool! Pretty slick if you ask me! Thanks ever so much for taking me back at least 40 years tonight.

The song, especially the recorded version, is as close to "musical" poetry as you can get.

This song barely broke the top 40 in 1968 reaching only #36. Because of that and the 'unfamiliarity factor' not many oldies or classic MOR stations are willing to play it. In any case, I consider this as well as "It's Too Late" and "Summer (The First Time)" to be among the better tunes Goldsboro recorded.

About 10 years ago on my way back from seeing my little sister at her dorm at USC, a Los Angeles station know for its obscure oldies, classics, and standards played this song and it blew my mind. It must have been some 30 years since I had heard it. I immediately ordered it online. The songs that can get lost in one's head. That being said, what does he say at 39 seconds? "Having a ball on a couple of(_____)"??? And I disagree with the poster that claimed Campbell's version was better. WHAT???

"Havin' a ball on a couple of bob" was the way I always hear it. A bob was a shilling - one twentieth of a pound sterling before they switched from Lsd to decimal money.
@ggregsnyder15 жыл бұрын
One website I just checked says "having a ball with a couple 'a bob," and in British "bob" is a very small amount of money. That's not official, though, just a website that posts lyrics. I always thought it was a "cup full of pog" (popular Hawai'ian drink".
@SirDilbere12 жыл бұрын
A 'Bob' was a Shilling - about 20 cents Australian. We used the same currency before decimal currency came in in the late '60s. And yes you really could have a ball with a few bob back then, now it takes a lot more.

This is a cool song! I laugh because we used to give each other a hard time growing up. I made fun of my Bobby Goldsboro hairdo in high school. I'll tell you what..... Now that we all have responsibilities, it sure is nice to escape to a mellow song for a brief few minutes.

I love this song. It's like every men's magazine from 1945 to '70 thrown in a blender...but married life is better! They don't make songs like that anymore.

A bob is a shilling, roughly equivalent to a US dime. Odd choice for Mexico, but songwriters can't always afford to choose the exact word. Maybe he really wanted to get the bit about ladies and corn cobs in, and he was prepared to rhyme "cob" with anything.
@MrJeff194714 жыл бұрын
Treating the ladies to "Corn On The Cob" ? WTF ?
@ggregsnyder15 жыл бұрын
Of course, it was a frog noise, not a cricket. Many people made the wrong connection, and on one of the talk shows, he mentioned having a cricket sound in his act, too, so people could compare it to his signature frog. And yes, heard the rice krispie story on Carson or Douglas or Merv...
@ggregsnyder16 жыл бұрын
In fact, it was a frog sound (he did a cricket for awhile, so that you could tell the difference).

A few thoughts: first, BG seems like an awfully, awfully nice guy. I remember him vividly being on the Mike Douglas (another awfully nice guy)Show regularly when I was a kid. Second, he does a serviceable version here, but I have to say Glen Campbell's cover of this song (also available on KZbin) is light years better. Check it out. Third, what is Bobby G up to these days?

This song got dropped from a reissue of Greatest Hits. United Artists was bad about abridged albums. What's the deal with corn on the cob?
