I was 7 years old in 1961 and my father got 1st row seats next to the Black Hawk Bench at the DDetroit Olympia. While the game was ongoing , Bobby Hull gave me his autograph. I have flashbacks of what I saw that night some 60 years ago. It was magical....the players sweating, all of them toothless, and all of them chewing gum. No helmets either. I fell in love with the game, could never play due to a heart murmur....but I saw all the greats in Detroit, and rooted for my Detroit hero's who at the top were, Gordie Howe, Norm Ullman, and Alex Delvecchio.

Yup, he was responsible for my interest in hockey at a young age, and my HERO growing up in Vancouver. My dad was honoured by Bobby in 1971 in Vancouver for Ford sales records. Bobby used to endorse Fomoco in Canada back then. I met him numerous times bc I never missed a Hawk game against the Canucks over the years. My biggest regret is not seeing Hull play at Chicago Stadium live! I did witness many games on TV though.

I could listen to Bobby Hull stories all day long. He was my favorite player as a kid, even tricked my grandma into buying me a CCM "Bobby Hull" hockey stick with a a curved blade (my father would not let me have one at that time lol, old school). I practiced my shot religiously to try to get a cannon shot like Bobby, eventually my wrist shot was harder than my team mates slap shots in Midget AA. Played against his son Blake back in the day. Thx Bobby, you were a great role model for me and true to form apples don't fall far from the tree , Bret is a class act too.

My Dad has been a season ticket holder to the NY Rangers since 1968...yes, we're both hockey fanatics..I played, he didn't !. Anyhow, he would tell me when the Hawks would come to town in the late 60's early 70's (I was only 6-9 yrs old) that the bus carrying the Blackhawks out of the Garden would have to wait for Bobby to sign EVERY LAST autograph from anyone who approached him before he got on the bus to leave. Other players would be sticking their heads out the bus windows going "C'mon Bobby, let's go" but he would not leave until every last person who was waiting got his signature. Classy Man...and one of the top 5 of all time!

Bobby Hull is not just one of the greatest ever to play the game....he'd be in the Hall of Fame on that basis alone... but Bobby did more to build the game into what it is today than any other star of that era save perhaps Bobby Orr. He put fans into the seats like no one before and he was unrivaled in that department until the Great One came along. The expansion of the league could not have happened without Bobby Hull, and the WHA would not have gotten off the ground without him playing in the league. And since that league was eventually folded into the NHL in part, fans also owe him a debt for those teams. And talk about an amazing ambassador for the game! Bobby Hull showed everyone else how it was done. I've heard stories over the years about his alleged flaws, i.e., maybe some problems in his marriage and drinking and partying too much, but those debits fade into insignificance next to his big smile, cheerful demeanor, and willingness to go the extra mile for the fans. And of course his amazing achievements on ice, and being the father in the greatest father-son duo in the history of the game. Brett must have made his father very proud!

I met Bobby Hull sometime in the 1960's. This was at the old Chicago Stadium on Madison Ave. in Chicago. Back then fans could wait outside the Blackhawk's locker room to shake hands and get autographs from players leaving to go home. Here's what I remember; Bobby would always be the LAST player to leave the Stadium. He WOULD NOT leave until all us kids got autographs! This sometimes took well over an hour. His wife was really pissed at him and us for making her wait! Shaking his hand was like shaking hands with a pot roast. His hand was like 2 in of pure muscle! He was a GREAT player and he really loved and appreciated us fans!!! 😍🤩🥰🥰🥰 R.I.P to "The Golden Jet!!!🥰🥰🥰

Bobby Hull was my idol. I had the pleasure of meeting him during an NHL alumni game. He dispelled the expression “Never meet your idol”. Bobby was friendly, humble, and easy to talk to. He smiled and shook my hand when I approached him to tell him he was my idol when I was growing up.

Life goes by so fast. When I was a kid Bobby was wrapping up his career. In my late teens Brett was THE BIGGEST star in the league. Bigger than Wayne and Maro a few years with 70, 86, 70 goal seasons in succession. I was there. Now Brett himself is 20 years beyond being very good and has not played in more than 15. Time.

@@russhook6595 As did ex-Bruin great Johnny "Chief" Bucyk. #9 might well be the most prestigious number, as in addition to the players you mentioned, there were also other greats like Mike Modano, Paul Kariya, Lanny McDonald, Glen Anderson, Bernie Nicholls, etc. There are certain numbers (9, 99, 88, 77, etc.) where a bit more scrutiny comes to a player, because especially with the high/double numbers, people almost expect them to be an elite player.

I had a wonderful opportunity to have a couple of beer with Bobby after a Hall of Fame game in Toronto a few years back. Granted, he was pretty soused, but he was full of great stories, a very pleasant and amicable individual, and was probably one of the most cordial guys up at that cocktail hour among the 200 or or so NHLers or ex-Nhlers who were up there. He signed a beautiful jersey for my niece with the words under his signature, "The Golden Jet". I've seen few of his autographs ever done that way. Special guy.

On another topic..I wittnessed Bobby Hull at a show in Toronto (surrounded by the sleazy promoter types who brought him in) stop to shake the hand of a fan who obviously couldn't afford the high price of an autograph .Bobby noticed the guy had a ratty old program from the Chicago Stadium. Much to the dissaproval of the leaches around him...Bobby offered to sign the guys program. It was pure class . That little gesture is something that will never be forgotten .

Bobby always spent time with fans. He was as down to earth as the fans were, and no matter what city he was in, he had friends! Last time I saw him, he was sitting at a table with Johnny Bower (RIP) and it was a nice experience sharing some stories with those guys. They always made you feel welcome, especially Bobby. He was never bothered when a fan approached him for a photo or autograph. Not like some of the NHL punks today, who cant be bothered.

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing him play live twice. He and Bobby Orr were the two most exciting players, I have ever seen in the NHL. His skating was insanely good, but of course people concentrated on his shot. But his skating was ridiculous. In today's skates, he would be right over the top. Those guys were playing in floppy sandles with a blade attached.

My family is from the Toronto area so many of us went to MLG over the decades to watch hockey, concerts, etc. In the mid-to-late-60s and one of my Dad's brothers and his wife went downtown to watch a Hawks/Leafs game. My uncle/aunt got downtown early to eat and on the way to the Gardens, my aunt was talking to a friend when all of a sudden, she was on the ground, stunned a bit and looked up to see Mr. Hull helping her off the sidewalk. My aunt was so engrossed in her conversation that she walked right into Mr. Hull, knocking herself to the ground! Mr. Hull profusely apologized to my aunt and uncle. My aunt once she realized "who" she walked into was all "starry-eyed".

I saw that guy - and in his prime, Hull's physique was almost a freak of nature. The guy was that strong. He was like Gordie Howe in that respect. Howe even once said of Hull: "We all knew what he was going to do but he was so strong no one could stop him." I for one do not doubt whatsoever that his slap-shot topped 115 mph.And that's with a wooden stick, folks. Bobby's brother, Dennis Hull ' a.k.a. "The Silver Jet" - had a real cannon of a shot, too, and those guys put the fear of God in goalies back in the old days, especially once Bobby and Stan Mikita popularized curved sticks. Bobby Hull helped make the NHL what it is today. During his tenure as a player, the NHL and then WHA added a multitude of fans to the game, fans who stayed with the game when the two leagues merged. He put fans in seats like no one else, with maybe the exception of Bobby Orr. He was just so exciting to watch play the game. The fans at the old Chicago Stadium roared as one and stood up when he gathered the puck in and flashed down the ice on another one of his patented end-to-end rushes. It was really something....

Bobby Hull had the physique of a god as a young man. Never let anyone tell you working on the farm doesn't build muscle, because that's where he and Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe, both built their incredible physiques. Howe was one of the strongest men ever to play and there were only a few men in the game then who compared with him. Bobby Hull and of course Tim Horton. Howe didn't have to fight much once he nearly killed Ranger's enforcer Lou Fontinato in a brief but now-legendary fight in February 1959. Fontinato was a legitimate tough guy, but you don't pull on Superman's cape.... and he learned that the hard way. Gordie was so tough that just a mean look from him was enough to keep most people in line, and if that didn't work, his famously-hard-hitting elbows would. Steroids? Those guys didn't need 'em! They built their muscle the old-fashioned way - good genes, hard work and clean living.

From coming up the stiars from the trains at College, to walking east along Carlton, to listening to the scalpers/program salesmen, to going through the usher turnstyle, to hearing the organ, to walking through the crowded smoke filled halls, to riding the escalator to the upper levels, to finding your gate, to showing the ticket to the usher and then walking into the well lit arena. I heard the Black Hawks were playing Detroit,i think in Chicago and Hull took a slap shot that was wide but shattered the plexiglass.The crew could not find any replacement glass and used dog fencing from the next neighborhood to finish the game.

Hockey players have always been the closest to the fans of all the sports. Even hall of famers treat the fans just like a friend they haven't seen in a long time. I was getting Stan Mikita's autograph at a show in Detroit, long time ago, and he was having trouble with the gold paint marker. It just wouldn't work. He looked up at me and said, "You know, this thing doesn't work for shit." Everyone in ear shot started laughing, including Stan. I'm thinking, "He's talking with me like we are at the bar." Only hockey player I ever got an auto from, that wasn't this way, was Maurice Richard. Boy, was he crusty. But Henri Richard, sitting next to him, was pleasant and very cool. Shame they are almost all gone now.

I watched Bobby play at the old Maple Leaf Gardens in 1968 (red seats). At 15 I remember being mesmerized by his power, skill and speed. From then on Hull was my hockey idol. Black Hawks beat Leafs that night, I don't remember the score

Then add the roar of anticipation coming from the crowd, especially at the old Chicago Stadium, it was unforgettable. The building literally shook under your feet.

My Dad took me to see the Hawks vs Leafs at the Gardens in 68 I believe. I still have the tickets and programs for all the NHL games I attended in the basement somewhere and I was only 9 at the time. I had no idea who Hull was but the glass wasn't high in those days and we watched him signing autographs for the fans during the pregame warm-up. We were sitting in the greens by the goal and I got to see Hull score 2 goals, one from the corner and right along the goal line, that night. Hawks won 4-2 and I was now a Bobby Hull and Hawks fan for life. This was only my third NHL game I ever saw at that point but Hull had me hook, line and sinker from then on. I was lucky enough to meet him 3 times in my life and the photograph of me standing next to him is going to my grave with me. My Dad took me to a Mercury dealership in Hamilton, ON to meet him and he was extremely patient with me and my nervousness. I'll always remember he was late getting there but nobody minded. He was bigger than life. When a friend emailed me that he had died, I was reminded of how old I've become and how I miss those days. Too many heroes from my childhood are gone. I never thought I would see Chicago win the Cup in my lifetime and I stood in shock in front of the TV in 2010 watching them do it. The Hawks have been mismanaged since 2015, I can't pronounce most of the player's names anymore and my jerseys have stayed at the back of the closet. I don't watch much hockey anymore especially if Chicago isn't in the playoffs.

Imagine that players DIDNT drink water during the games among all the other differences Btwn then &now and u may ponder what could have been or how to evaluate performances of the atheletes from different eras.. I didn't see Hull play until he played for Winnipeg likewise I didn't see Howe play until he played with New England but it was obvious he was a very tough individual who got lots of room on the ice.. and Played a precise positional game..

Howe did not hit referees like Richard did. Saw Gordie do thing that Richard wished he could do....I lived here in Detroit and witnessed it. You go by what you read in a book....dont believe it all...Howe never injured anyone with a stick or in a manner which demanded league punishment. And his fight with Lou Fontinato was man against man, fists against first and Gordie beat his ass.
