I am a Habs fan from Montreal. It would thus be easy for me to claim that although Orr was great, Lemieux or Gretzky were better (or, to pick up Habs players, Lafleur, or Maurice Richard). But I can't. Bobby Orr was, simply put, the greatest thing that ever hapenned to this game called hockey. There never was a player like him before, and there hasn't been one since.

I say this as a Flyer Fan...Bobby Orr was the Greatest Hockey Player of all time....and indeed, one of the greatest athletes of all time.....his name is not out of place among the Mantles, Pele's, Chamberlains, Montana's, and any other sport immortal...Bobby is amongst them easily!! And that is no exxageration!

I was a Leafs fan, hated him, he scared me, he make me sick to my stomach every time he touched the puck, but I grew to love him Got to meet him, melted right in front of him and started to cry. Like a baby. Was like seeing a physical angel in human form. The greatest of all time. Any sport.

Two reasons why this ovation went on for so long. One, because we never had the chance to see his career through to the end because of one SOB who stole him from us and sent him to Chicago. With all due respect to them. Secondly, to tell him we love him. And thank you. I truly pity people who never saw him play.

Agreed. The only part of the entire ceremony was seeing that lying, evil POS, Eagleson. But, if you believe in karma (and I do), Eagleson got what was coming to him, went to prison, stripped of all his hockey-related accolades. Bobby, on the other hand, is now a principal in a successful hockey agency business, representing some of the game's top stars (e.g. Connor McDavid, Taylor Hall, etc.), with a net worth of approx. $35 million.

I remember this night watching before cable on WSBK Channel 38 in Boston with Fred Cusick and Johbny Pierson. I did everything I could not to cry in front of my dad and brother. Bobby Orr and his teammates are so loved by. Boston. The joy they brought to us was insane.There is no debate Bobby Orr was, is, and will ALWAYS be the GREATEST HOCKEY PLAYER EVER. Somewhere on youtube there is a clip of Bobby Scoring a goal for his 100 th point which was never done before by a defensemen. It was a shorthanded goal against Detroit. On the ice at the time for Detroit was, HOF Gordie Howe, HOF Frank Mahovlich, HOF Alex Delveccio HOF Roger Crozier.

I was quite weatlhy at the time. after it became known Bobby Orr, had almost become bankrupt, after what Eagleson did to him. I lined up with a 1960's Chicago Blackhawks leather coat, which I was offered 6k for, back then by the hall of fame I politely declined. I waited 3 hours to get an autograph from Orr. The Hall of Fame when I was finally about 5 minutes away from meeting Orr said, thats it, its over. Orr told them he would never come back if the remaining people didn't get to get their autographs. I got within five people of him and started crying like a fricking baby. It was like meeting Jesus's brother or something. Never felt anything like that in my life. I handed him a paper and said on the piece of paper, give me an amount I will give it to you. He just smiled and and shook his head. His hand was so rough and so strong, that sort of blew me away too. What a freaking player. What a guy. What a man. As far as the best player of all time. I think we have an amazing top two or three or four. Gretz and I met many times, I have to say he was pretty insane as well. The best three or four were divine is all I want to say.

Bobby Orr is to hockey what the Pilgrims are to the United States..he started it all. Growing up on Cape Cod we had to get up on the roof and spin the antenna to get Ch 38 to watch the games. Boston loved Orr and Orr loved Boston. Boston loved the Bruins. Nothing the Red Sox and Patriots can ever match in this era of free agency and corporate packaging. I got to see Bostons greatest athlete EVER....thanks Bobby!!!

This guy is the reason I played hockey. My dad never played hockey growing up but loved the Bruins and Bobby Orr. He was at game 4 in 70 as a 13 year old. I was pretty good too. Still only 1/1000 of a player Orr was though.

I remember living in Chicago back 1978 when Bobby played for the Hawks. I do remember Nov 8th when he announce his retirement from Hockey!!! I was on school bus when I heard it on the radio live!!! A sad day for Hockey. I saw the ceremony on TV 2 months later on NHL 79 on ch 44 WSNS!!!

Bobby Orr’s final full season was 1974-75 when he won his second scoring title and ended when he had just turned 27. Most players are just entering their prime at that point. He played 36 more games over the next 4 seasons where he scored 45 points.

All u have to do to know why this guy is the true greatest of all time is go to the capital of hockey Toronto. Went 2 see final Bruins/Leafs game in the old Maple Leafs Garden. Leafs pulled out all the stops introducing greats for both teams past & present. The guy who got the longest & greatest ovation in Toronto that evening ~ you guessed it, Bobby Orr! Not even Gretzky got ovations like that at arenas where he never put on the sweater. Not even in Toronto where he was a local kid too.#Respect

As Gordie Howe said, the biggest disappointment in the history of the NHL was the too-early departure of Bobby Orr. Imagine what the recordbook would look like if Orr was healthy for 20 years? Glad we had him when we did.
